    The actor who played the little girl apparently was so convinced by the puppet of ET she thought it was real and would talk to it in between shots as if it was one of her friends. Which is cute, and also a little sad.

      That little girl was Drew Barrymore. Spielberg never told Drew anything about what E T would look like so that when she first sees him, she would possible react like Spielberg hoped she would. She did, and also she was never told that E.T. would die, so that she would cry easily, since she got so close to him and was not expecting those scenes when they turned their home into a hospital.

    I was born in Poland in 1977 and grew up in the 80's. Poland was then a communist regime. Compared to other Eastern Bloc regimes, Poland was relatively lax when it came to Western films. The main thing was that the films didn't criticize other systems, or better yet, films criticized the Western system, so you could be lucky and a movie theater in your town got some roll of film to show. My older brother then took me into films like "Superman 3", "The Empire Strikes Back", "Return of the Jedi", "The Labyrinth", and also "E.T.".
    I still remember how I cried in my bed at night because the film had touched me so much and because I thought I would never be able to watch the film again.

      @@TheHighSorcerer i'm pretty sure that that was indeed the reason why it was such a big deal back then. Until this movie, aliens have always been seen as monsters and enemies with other 2 exceptions being Startrek and star wars, though in those cases, stories were always presented as far future/past and totally different from our world. ET meanwhile was happening right here right there and that was probably why the hype was so great. Because it wasn't a story about some hypothetical place at some hypothetical time dealing with some hypothetical problem. It was about a child like any other having troubles with siblings and in school like everyone and it brought out the question of "well, what would *you* do in this situation?" to the debate.

      @andromidius Před rokem +1

      @@landonwiese6850 You're right. The only really significant change over the last forty years has been how small and mobile computers have become, and widespread access to the internet. Technically these things already existed back then - just less powerful, bulkier and far more expensive. Even electric cars aren't really that new - they were experimenting with them a century ago, they just didn't have effective battery storage yet.
      But compared to the changes since the early 20th century, the last half century have just been small gradual improvements. No massive leaps in technology like what our great grandparents experienced with the advent of electrical devices, cars, airplanes, etc. And for people living in rural India they would have experienced this technological shift differently - many of them still lack electricity or even running water in places, so getting to suddenly experience modern technology would be shocking. And they had at least heard of such things - imagine what someone from an uncontacted tribe would think even seeing a bicycle.
      Makes you realise just how unphased many of us are to the wonders of invention. And the horrors of it too.

      There is a lot of speculation if that's true or not. Other than the alien befriending a boy Rays story is completely different. Ray also claims Close Encounters stole his some of his idea. He claims the aliens in that film had a similar appearance to what he described them as in his screenplay.
      However the big headed skinny alien look that Ray describes his aliens in his story predates Rays writings by nearly 30 years since that stereotypical alien appearance first began to be described back in 1940's when the idea of aliens visiting out planet became big during the time of the famous Roswell New Mexico UFO crash "incident".
      So Ray basically stole the look of aliens from the already established stereotype of what they looked like prior just as Spielberg did in Close Encounters. However in E.T. Spielberg gave the alien creature an entirely original and completely different and unique look from how anyone had ever described them before.

    As an educated person, I can confirm that I like this movie :)
    I think I understand Raeen's point (if I'm interpreting it correctly), that the premise of the movie isn't especially believable. But it's basically a science fiction fantasy. And even adults can suspend their disbelief for a good story.

    This movie came out when I was 6 years old. I was too young to see it in the theaters because the recommended age was 8-10. I had ET toys, coloring books, posters, story tape, stickers... everything you can imagine, but the one thing I didn't have was the story as I had never seen it or knew what it was about. I just loved the character. Very frustrating for a kid. Then a few years later, they re-released it in the theaters, and my mom took me to go see it. It was great, but I had moved on then, and it was not as magical as it would have been had I watched it what I was younger.
    Show them the movie "Cocoon". Another 80s UFO/alien visitor movie.

    I've never had children but just knowing I could re-experience some of the best parts of my childhood through their eyes is reason enough to want to have children. You can kinda relive so many great moments and be a child again..well if hopefully you have the time to be with your child. So many parents these days are just so busy..and missing out. I mean those early are just so damn important and full of..wonderment. No extra income for silly possessions or whatever is worth the time you should be spending with your kids. Yeah, I went on a tangent.

      @patticrichton1135 Před 11 měsíci +1

      I agree, my kids were born in 1973, 1976 and 1978,, and I was a "stay-at-home" mom and had a few part-time jobs until they were in high school when I started a full time job. I didn't want anyone else raising my boys in those very early years. But it was easier to do that back then. Now it's harder, both parents almost have to work, unless one of you has a job that pays big money. Also, so many single parents these days than ever, so really no choice BUT to work while raising your kids.

    Take a look at the German war film DAS BOOT by Wolfgang Petersen from the early 1980s. It is about a submarine on enemy voyages in World War II. One of the best German productions, has received international awards and nominations. Exciting, scary, nerve-wracking, breath-taking and claustrophobic due to the camera work! Anyone who knows the film will certainly agree with me... Would really be something for your channel.
