I would argue he didn't have an "inferiority problem." But had physical and mental challenges that he overcame with flying colors. The inferiority complex resided with those who couldn't see beyond his afflictions long enough to recognize their own.
I think it's lost in translation. I don't think they mean what was translated.
I wonder if a part of that is lost in translation. Forrest seems to know he's different but doesn't let that stop him.
I agree he doesn't really have the inferiority complex for that reason.

what I like the most is that Babu understood Jenny's character so well. Most people who watch the movie in the west don't even get her character and trauma and for an old tribal man from a different culture to understand her darkness and tragedy so well touched me a lot
I saw this when I was nine, and that part definitely went over my head. I thought she was just upset about being poor...but it was a lot more than that.

@@BloodylocksBathory Yeah. I mean it was obvious she was searching for something...probably in the wrong places. But a lot of people do that who had decent childhoods. The idea that she was recreating trauma didn't occur to me until way older after some psychology courses.
And people think she kept his son from him... Forrest immediately went running when she left: For 3 years and 3 months. Making their child 2.5 when he finally came home. Couldn't exactly call someone on their cell phone...
It's a wonderful movie. I'm glad y'all enjoyed it and understood it even if you didn't know some of the American historical references.

On the contrary, the film is terribly overrated and pathetic, it's an outright kitsh.
And it robbed the Oscars of a real masterpiece - Shawshank Redemption.
But thanks to this film, it was already apparent at the time that the Oscars were being awarded willy nilly.

Your reactions were spot on. His mother was the only reason he ever had a chance, but then her teachings enabled him to soar from there. His legs were another challenge, but if not for Jenny standing up for him and telling him to run, he would not have broken his braces which enabled him to fly further. He found himself in the middle of so much the 60s American history.. He took his life lessons from the most important women in his life. His mother shaped his future. Sadly, for Jenny it was her father that's shaped hers. It was suggested that her father drank alcohol and he would physically and sexually abuse her and her sisters. That's what shaped her mind what a man that loves you does, he hurts you. She doesn't think she's good enough for Forrest, she thinks the only love she should have should be degrading. She learns to drink and do drugs like her father did to escape her shame. This is why Father's need to be good to their daughters. They learn from the father what traits to look for in a future mate, that's why they need their fathers to be good men. Sadly, Jenny finally found peace with herself when she had the child and married Forrest, but it was too late as she died soon after.

Forest Gump is just a lovely, gentle movie. I think that some of the jokes do require a bit of cultural context, but following the basic story is easy enough. Forest is just the nice guy who finished first, after going through a lot of terrible stuff in his life.
They are always very sharp about understanding the main story, very impressive reaction.
This can be a challenging movie because it has so many references to American history (Elvis Presley, John Lennon, the Ku Klux Klan, the hippie movement, Watergate Hotel, etc.) A lot of the story (like Jenny's child molester father) is implied rather than said and the reason is that we follow Forrest's naive narration that does not understand a lot of things that a clever and cynical audience would.
Still, we can all relate to the message about hard work and morals succeeding over disadvantages. I think Babu's summation that this movie celebrates the common man was perfectly spot on.
This is one of the greatest movies ever made showing all of the American Pop Culture references 😊

Don't judge Jenny too harshly, she had a terrible life growing up and never felt worthy of Forrest's love. She always ended up doing what she told Forrest to do when he was in trouble, which was to run.
It's very frustrating that part.
It's good they recognised her childhood / home was a problem.
She did a lot of her own running including into drugs.
Pity she didn't feel good enough for Forrest

It took me almost 30 years to not judge Jenny too harsh. Now I understand she never knew good men all around her and that's why she never accepted Forrest's love. Still, I get so much frustrated about how she chose all those douche bags instead of him.
The scene with Lieutenant Dan standing up for Forrest never fails to make me cry.
Extra ❤ for the viewer who understood jenny and her struggles in life. I didn't want her to die either.
I love that he said, after Forrest your down Jenny's house , "know build something there" in all the reactions I've seen to this movie that was the best thing I heard about that scene.
In regards to Jenny, it wasn't Jenny not understanding Forrest, it was Forrest not understanding Jenny. He never understood that her father was sexually abusing her and her sister and what they does to a child and how that affects that person forever. It took Jenny awhile to get it together. It was likely the birth of their son that was the catalyst to her being able to find some peace.
Also the gentleman in the middle seems to forget that Forrest is rich. He doesn't need to earn. He can be a full time father without worrying any finances. As a matter fact it is insinuated that Forrest sits on that log all day until his son returns home from school..
The opening scene is so great, him offering his chocolates to a black lady at a time when it was unheard of to show kindness to other races, also how he said you can tell a lot about a man by the shoes he wears ( he is wearing old running shoes with his suit...)
Humans are amazing ❤ its so wonderful to see that despite any differences in location, religion, political doctrine, language or age that there is a universal language spoken through movies and music that every human on earth can understand. You all fill my heart with such joy and peace and I cant eait to see what you all experience next!
Our friends have been able to enjoy some of the masterpieces of cinema, a work that is not forgotten even after 29 years.

It's a humble movie enjoyed by humble people. I know there are a lot of historical references and jokes, but that didn't harm the spirit of the story. I'm glad they were able to enjoy it very well.

I will be 48. I remember trying to get my dad to watch this. I was amazed and it was an awesome movie. My Father said "No. I have no interest. The whole movie is saying even if you are slow and broken you will succeed. That is not how life works." I wanted to disagree, but aside from a very few, he was right. The world is not a gentle place. What he didn't take, because he didn't watch it, is you get what you give. I try, by my dad's own teachings, treat everyone as a friend until they give you a reason not to. That is one of the hardest things to do. Until someone gives you a reason not to like them, they are ok in my book.
Wonderful story about a pure hearted man. Jenny was broken by her father and her life was one without love exept for Forest.

It’s magical to see people react to these films for the first time. I got choked up on one of them started to cry.

I'm always mad about what happened to Jenny. The man who was supposed to protect her and love her more than any other man on Earth was instead the one that showed her a life without love by sexually assaulting her and her sister while they were very young and because of this she was very traumatized and never knew her own self-value nor felt that she deserved love from a man. Because of the trauma she was always with men that abused her. Very sad. Like the rest of the movie, Jenny's death is important because this is around the time that the AIDS virus was first being seeing by doctors and no one knew what it was or how to treat it. It was primarily affecting homosexuals and drug addicts that shared needles at first, but then started to affect people that had received blood transfusions and had unprotected sex so it became the WORLD'S problem. Her death was the last historical moment marker in the movie.
I think I may have mentioned before, but I do think they'd like the movies "Powder", "Meet Joe Black", and "Bicentennial Man". :)

Got to see major cultural differences, and i guess shouldnt have expected for them to grasp any of the historical american events. These guys are great its so interesting to see their perspective on things. Very nice people
They probably didn't understand the Watergate stuff. Not that it was super important to the story...but definitely a touchstone in American history.

The author of the book of this movie is a man named Winston Groom he as someone who lived in the south had original ideas for the book until after the book published Robert Zemeckis thought of making a movie about the book but leave in the intentions of love, Determination and purpose

You should try to see another film with the same actor! It is called The Green Mile, and it is gut-wretching and beautiful, a real masterpiece. It also talks about some really heavy topics. I think it would be a really good thing for them to see.
You should show them ( The Shawshank Redemption ) next. I love Forrest Gump but Shawshank should have won the best movie award at the Oscars that year.

I love watching their reactions. They should also watch Apollo 13, with both Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump) and Gary Sinise (Lieutenant Dan). Such a great movie based on a true story.

Couple of things. When Forrest was in the Hospital and got the letters. It was not letters from Jenny it was letters that were returned, so Jenny never received the letters. Also the scene with hotel with the flashlights was an actual event called “The Watergate scandal” after the name of the Hotel that Forrest was staying in. That was the result of the resignation of President Nixon.

Great choice! One of the best movies of all time!! How about Back To The Future if translations are possible? Or Castaway, another Tom Hanks movie where he's stuck on an island alone. I think those would be so much fun for them!

Im glad they got the gist of the movie. there is so much stuff that the men missed becuase of the history and context from it. Seeing this in the theater back then and listening to the people laugh in the theater and react to it was something that i wont forget. That itself was wonderful. Glad they enjoyed it too.
You really have to know American history/culture to fully appreciate this movie. They are missing so much context.

This is the greatest movie of all time. It has a bit of every thing and it mixes in a lot of worldwide cultural events.

It's a great movie but definitely not the greatest of all time, doesn't touch The Godfather or The Shawshank Redemption by any means.

It was interesting to see the scenes where there were very specific cultural references that these people didn't pick up on but instead it was interesting to see what they took out of the scenes.
what I _imagine_ Forest said about Vietnam: "Here's what I have to say, about the war in Vietnam: It was hot. we did what we were told. lot of marchin' in the jun-gle. there were a lot of bul-lets. and Bubba died. it was sayd."

The Watergate Hotel was where he was during the President Nixon section. Where he called to complain about the flashlights in the office across from him, that was the Nixon Watergate Scandal. It was why he resigned.
There's a lot lost in translation without the foundational knowledge of US history. It doesn't seem like they picked up on Jenny's having been sexually abused by her father either. Still, glad they enjoyed the movie and glad to see you continuing to show them Western cinema. I am repeating once more that I would be really intrigued to see what these guys make of the Lord of the Rings, but the same guys need to see all 3 films.
@@bobsacamano4096 The movie is enjoyed around the world...sure, knowing American history probably makes the experience richer, but so many people (from different countries) have first seen it as kids (with no proper knowledge of American history) and yet the movie's had a profound efect on them. American movies are popular around the world, people without contextual knowledge are still able to enjoy them. People outside of the US are completely used to watching foreign movies, it's not a problem...

I don't know if you're from the US...but the movie is an absolute classic in so many countries...I watched it as a kid for the first time, knew nearly about the US and still loved it. It's kind of a classic in plenty of places...even if you don't get some cultural or historical references...you kind of learn them as you go...

Forrest Gump is a magnificent movie.
Telling the story of a guy who grew up with some challenges. Difficulty in learning, unable to walk without supports. But his heart was always on the right side. And his mother never gave up on him. He eventually met a girl who helped him learn to talk and read more properly. And eventually, he even managed to walk properly without needing his supports, and when that happened, he ran!
Forrest's learning disability may have never truly disappeared, he was still a bit slow at times, but it didn't matter. He understood still, and took things seriously often. His ability to run made him an excellent man for Rugby, he graduated collage, and he eventually got enlisted in the military. Once in the military he met with people he became friends with. One of them, Bubba he lost in the Vietnam war... But his selfless nature still saved several people, even if some weren't all too happy with it, such as Dan. Forrest was always a person with the heart in the right place. Even when he gained immense popularity, and even after meeting the President on several occasions, he never changed. The fame never went to his head. He was always the same. Every person he ever met in his life, eventually got a better life because of him. Bubba may have died, but because of profit with a successful shrimp industry put in motion by Forrest, Bubba's family profited greatly from it thanks to Forrest's kindness. Lieutenant Dan, whom originally despised having been saved by Forrest, eventually found a reason to live and ended up became extremely successful in life afterwards as well, because Forrest never gave up on him. Forrest's mother got to experience their son becoming incredibly successful in life, and their early support and belief in him was not for nothing. They succeeded as a parent and died a happy mother. Eventually we get to Jenny... She ended up living a rather horrible life at times. Filed with abuse and drugs... The only person who ever seemed to care for her was Forrest. He NEVER gave up on her, and he never stopped loving her either. And THAT devotion and loyalty eventually ended up helping Jenny out too. And when Forrest realize that she got him a son... He was originally afraid his son was a lot like him, less intelligent than normal, but turns out he was not. In fact he was even top of his class. And for obvious reasons, Forrest couldn't have been more proud.
However, Jenny would eventually pass due to becoming too sick. But before she did, she would marry Forrest. And the story ends with Forrest finding new purpose as a father.
Truly shows that no matter what Challenges your life starts of with... Your future can ALWAYS get bright and fantastic. Helping people, and caring for others will ALWAYS have a positive effect.
His way of taking things seriously and literally was a big part of his success. He didn't always understand sarcasm or metaphor but he was always genuine. And that seemed to help him through all of the challenges.
I love watching the team react to movies!! Forrest Gump always makes me cry. I suggest watching 'Star Wars: A New Hope'!
YES. They would love Star Wars. They should show them the movies in release order, maybe putting the 2 (3 if you count the Clone Wars movie, but you don't really need to, do you?) spinoffs between the prequels and the sequels. They might have difficulties uploading it, though, since Disney keeps its copyrighted properties pretty close to them. However, they got away with Frozen and Moana, and many other channels have gotten away with uploading their reactions, so they might be safe.
I really enjoy watching these reactions.

I really enjoy these movie reaction videos, and this was one of my favorites. I learn a lot from their perspective of the story and it is like watching the movie for the first time with new eyes. Thank you for you wonderful videos!
There's a lot of subtleties that I don't think they caught while watching this. Most of them had to do with the American history that was taking place around them. But also Jenny. She was sexually abused by her father. That's why her life was spiraling out of control so badly. The past was haunting her too much.
Have them watch the horror movies Terrifier and Terrifier 2! Just kidding that would go WAY too far. It would be cruel to show them something that extreme. These are pure souls. Love this channel.

One of my favourite movies and I can watch it anytime. ☺
1. The music rights alone must have cost a small fortune💲💲
2. Kurt Russell did the voice for Elvis.
3. IRL Sally Fields is only 10 years older than Tom Hanks.
4. Having gotten his degree Forrest would have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. Not a recruit. His ASVAB kills that.
5. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around.
6. Normally an enlisted Army person would be fully aware of his/her separation date.

11. You have had a ride through recent US history and culture. From Elvis, John Lennon, Abby Hoffman to Vietnam and Watergate. Even the jogging craze of the 70's. About the only thing left out was streaking.

14. Haley Joel Osmentt/Forrest Jr. steals the show in "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis.
15. Often when he's finishing a segment about death, he ends it by saying "That's all I have to say about that"
16 Keep in mind, if Jenny wasn't wasting her life seeking men like her father and was with Forrest he/we wouldn't have had this incredible journey.

The Bollywood version of Forrest Gump, Laal Singh Chaddha is a great movie, and I would implore any fans of the original to watch the Indian version as well.

Though it is never explicitly state, I've always assumed the disease that killed Jenny was AIDS. The timing was right historically, as were a lot of the behaviours she engaged in that were considered factors in catching the condition. Funny seeing little Haley Joel before he started seeing dead people, but the whole cast was pretty damn solid. My only regret is so much of the content is relevant if you know the history of the events, so I don't blame the guys reviewing it for knocking something off the score.
These gentlemen could just appreciate the general storyline. The one fellow recognized Elvis from videos, but they could not know references like the KKK, John Lennon and 'Imagine', Watergate, LBJ, etc. That is half the fun of the movie. No wonder they did not give it 5 out of 5.
They thought of this as the story of a common man, overcoming difficulty. Nope -- he has the power of 'magical realism' where he is granted speed, luck at fishing, excellence at ping-pong, etc. It is either blessing, or plot armor. I can't tell.
