Welcoming autism into the workplace

  • Nearly three years ago, when tech giant Microsoft announced that it was starting a pilot program to hire autistic workers, they received more than 700 resumes within a few weeks. German software maker SAP has instituted a program to bring people with autism into its workforce worldwide, and other companies are following suit. By all accounts, giving those on the spectrum an opportunity to use their talents productively has been a tremendous success. Lee Cowan looks at the changing face of workplace diversity.     I've been saying for years that autism involves highly precise thinking that should be utilized.

    I had an internship that ended the beginning of 2017 when I finished my degree. I applied for 2-6 jobs per week and it took me until December of that year to get a job. And its a technical/trades field with a high demand for workers. They were impressed with my experience and all that, but once the phone interview/screening hit, I usually never heard back; even if I answered all of the technical questions correct. I have spent a lot of time working on social skills and trying to come across as "normal", but still come across as odd with people I don't know.
    The job I ended up getting, they needed help badly, and there was no "formal" HR interview. I was just interviewed by the supervisor and given a site visit with him and the other employees. Got offered the job shortly after. That's why some of these companies are going with a less informal interview for autistic individuals, and it really seems to help.

      The formal interview where impression management comes first is the "Narcissistic Fast Track Scheme" which has been the default to date

    Yeah living with autism is difficult in the workplace, most people automatically attack the awkwardness without thought.

      More the closed minded types. Not all NT's are bad but the closed minded ones you have to watch

    I spent 5 years working in an open plan office, which is a sensory nightmare for Autistic people. And one of the co-owners had Level 1 Autism. Still, no empathy. Then I got downsized for the crime of turning 50.
    Been spending the past six years being unemployable. There is no hope. None of the lip service seems to be working.

    I've heard some pretty asinine job titles in this new digital age - "VP of Audience Acquisition" (really?). But Chief Accessibility Officer? WTF? Also, is Microsoft practicing a form of Affirmative Action for Autistic people?

      If they are, it's a good form of it. These aren't folks who are less qualified than others. They can do the job just as well (or better) than comparable candidates, but are often overlooked during traditional interviews
