    I knew you would come up with a Twist on tilted panels. Because typical designs are inconvenient to deploy and you have to be able to climb on top and most cases. And anybody that is walking on their roof daily is looking for roof issues the gas prop is genius. I am anxious to see how it works when you adjust for fall and winter I presume it is mounting points. Thank you for the material list I will check it out.

    I installed 2 -100w Renogy panels with VHB tape on my '02 Dodge Ram 1500 van fiberglass roof more than a year and a half ago with the molded plastic mounts and they are not only rock solid, they look great. I pull up on the panels with both hands and it raises the roof. Check the quarter inch self tapping bolts and they haven't budged. I watched your video first. I installed a new 100ah LifePo4. I'm thinking 200w isn't enough for winter so I'm getting another 100w panel with the tilt mounts for setting on the ground at first and then figure out mounting it in the same fashion as yours. I subscribed to see all of your videos but this is the first one that popped up from you in a long time. Ironically I just happened to be ready to do it this week and these 2 video's helped. Thanks!

    Hi if your worried about aerodynamic still after you get your panels up there a cheap Remy is they use to have those big defectors that you would put on the front of your truck and securing it under the front of the hood.get one of those and put the big defector in front of the bracket that will get the most wind when your going down the road.Then tape it down that should help with your aerodynamics on your can then you could paint the big defector white to match your roof just a thought good video

    Hobotech - nice build. Once you had bonded the VHB tape to one side of the panel was it difficult to lift up the other side and pull off the strips? I would suggest dedicated locknuts or blue Locktite for all those nuts & bolts that you want to keep solid. You couldn't sand down the raw edges on the corners, so it's time to bite the bullet and get some files for your tool kit. Denatured alcohol is considered pure alcohol and is a great solvent, it's only downside it evaporates really fast, particularly in high temperatures. Another thing that is super effective at removing dirt and grease without leaving a residue is automotive spray brake cleaner. You were mentioning aerodynamics affecting your choice for panel placement. It's possible to fashion a custom air dam out of PVC pipe. Thanks for the video.

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  Před 5 lety +4

      I didn't show in the video due to time constraints but I took the VHB off the right side of the panel first, laid it down lightly in place, then did the left side as shown. After pressing down the left side I went back the right and applied pressure there. So the answer is, no. Locktite is a good idea but I am just running lock washers on the back panels (what came with the kit) and they haven't come loose. The PVC air dam sounds like an interesting project. I might have to try it.

    • @ScorpionRegent
      @ScorpionRegent Před 5 lety +2

      @@HOBOTECH I completely understand you not showing the whole process, VHB being the ticking time bomb it is. I was wondering if you took the brackets off the panels on the right side, attached them with VHB and bolted the everything together after the fact. That would have been a nervy move. I am really glad it all worked out. You can always use Locktite later if things loosen up. once again thanks for the video.

    I am using VHB also for mounting to my trailers aluminum roof. Im confused? I was told that the VHB 5952 tape was a better bond and stronger so that's what I bought. You say the 4950 is better? I got my info from 3M. I hope it wasn't a mistake.
    Also I figured panels in parallel would be better for a mobile set up (I'm running 3 100 watt renogy panels)as shadows on even one panel in series will cause a loss of power to all panels. So one would have to park in the open all the time. On a stationary mount such as a home series would be better and you can run smaller wire farther from the panels.

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  Před 5 lety +3

      Bill Redding below asked the same thing about why I switched to series so you can read my response there. There are different VHB tapes for different applications. If you are bonding aluminum to aluminum then 5952 might be the right one. I used 4950 because that is what AM Solar has used for decades to do installs on fiberglass. I figure if they were wrong they would be knee deep in lawsuits by now.

    my biggest question with this mounting process is...if the panel were to get damaged (say from a tree branch or hail)...how are you going to replace them when you can't access the bolts to those brackets and the tape is so strong?

    One question. Will the front panel shade the rears as the sun goes down or is it too short for that to happen?

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  Před 5 lety +3

      In the late fall through early spring it probably will shade them (assuming I park facing south) but the angle is so steep at that point those rear panels won't be doing anything anyway. In the dead of winter those rear panels are basically useless.

    Did I miss the explanation of why you don't care about having the back of the van point South any more? Because it looks like you could have tilted the 3rd panel the opposite way and still pointed the back of the van south.

    Did I miss the reason you're wiring all your panel in series vs. parallel? I'm guessing because they're 12v panels and so require heavier gauge wire vs. 24v panels? Still, wouldn't you want to have the max amps you could get instead -- which is what I'd be going for, using the largest-wattage (and 24v) panels I expect.
    Whatever, I sure do like not having to drill holes into the roof to mount panels...even though I WOULD have to drill a hole for the cable run (if necessary).

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  Před 5 lety +1

      I'm going to do a video on why as soon as I install my new batteries, but I'll give you the short answer. I field tested these 3 panels in parallel vs series and I got significantly more watts in series. Reasoning is that the compact panel isn't exactly the same spec as the rear panels so that probably throws the MPPT off in parallel. Second, is that MPPT controllers prefer higher voltage and when you're charging up to 15.5v off a max of 19v panels the controller has less to work with. So series is better. Now, if I had 4 panels I'd run series-parallel for the best bang but with an odd number I can only go one or the other. BTW you won't find 24v panels in 100w. Renogy doesn't make them.

    • @billredding2000
      @billredding2000 Před 5 lety

      @@HOBOTECH Thanks for the info. I know (general rule of thumb, if you will) panels up to around 100W are almost always (if not always!) 12v, and those a bit over and upwards are 24v (or maybe more, 48 for example), but I wire my panels in parallel -- but I don't have them ALL wired together (for several reasons).
      Specifically, I have 2 Renogy 100W "compact" 12v panels, 2 Grape Solar 180W 24v panels, and one Kyocera 65W 12v panel...but as mentioned, I don't use them all at the same time! I have 2 "portable emergency/backup power-stations" -- the small station (with Samlex 300W sine-wave inverter) uses the 2 100W 12v panels (in parallel) and the large station (Samlex 600W sine-wave inverter) uses the 2 180W 24v panels (also in parallel). The 65W 12v panel is used by itself if a lot of amps isn't needed (no need to recharge quickly), and since it puts out less power (~3.78A), I can run a smaller gauge wire -- and a longer length of it -- from it to my controller (14AWG), so the panel can be out in the sun while the power-staton(s) is in the shade.
      Both stations have Renogy 30A "Rover" MPPT controllers.
      Happy Solaring,

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  Před 5 lety +2

      The Eternabond is there for two purposes. 1) To weatherproof the VHB tape itself so it lasts longer. Eventually UV and moisture would make failure possible. With the Eternabond that is much less likely. 2) As a backup in case the VHB would fail. While Eternabond itself won't hold the panel to the roof it would hold one failed corner down until the issue was discovered.
