But heard from the ears of a foreigner they're like basically the same language because they're so unique compared to the others. I learned school yard English in six months when we emigrated to Australia in 1949 - 5 weeks on the MV Surriento- and my mother learned basic English in twelve months, however she could speak German and Russian, before we emigrated from an American run DP camp in Germany called Geislingen not far from Ulm sad to say with little practise fo the last 66 years my Estonian as decompensated to a very basic level and when I listen to Estonians speak I find it hard to keep up with the flow doesn't time race away as we age !!!!!!
I think you are talking about the "improvement" of 1739 It was done by a german guy to translate the entire bible into Estonian (separate parts existed before in dialects). He just tried to work out a unified version for the translation. He based his work on German and germanized Estonian, also grammarwise and in terms of sentence structure. German has had huge influence on Estonian throughout history, unlike on Finnish, which has therefore remained a more finno ugric language in its essence. Most of our languade group has died out. Only Estonian, Finnish and Hungarian remain to function on all levels of society, incl science, higher education and administration. So we are uniq. btw: did you know that only 47 nations in the entire world can acquire university education on their mother tongue. Estonian, with its les than 1 million native speakers, is, I think, the smallest. Anyway, at least we write the way we say the words :) That aspectmakes it easier to learn than English. Trust me, the most difficult language for an English native speaker would be Greek.

I learned The Korean alphabet in a couple of days and I can pronounce their writing now but I was scared to learn the actual language because people say it's very hard. The way this guy talks about Estonian reminds me a lot how English people talk about Korean so I'm starting to think that Korean might be similar to Estonian and it might be easy for me :) By the way, Estonian has more vowels in the writing but the same sounds exist in English too actually. Estonian vowels are aeiouõäöü and one vowel has one phonetic sound to it as opposed to English vowels of which each is combined from two phonetic sounds. Estonian a is like a in "market". E is like in "wedding". i is like pronouncing English e. O is like in "song". U is like o in "booo!" or the second sound in the pronunciation of the letter o. õ is like the first sound in English o. If I say õu in Estonian it sound like i'm pronouncing Englis O. Ä is like a in "bad". Ö is like i in "sir" or in the beginning of "ecology" (fun fact "öö" is a word and it means night). But nothing with ü sound in English comes to mind though. It's like when you say "uber " in German or Latin μ. It Sound a bit like y in some words like Syria or synchronize.

While I lived in Estonia, I was able to most closely approximate a native accent when speaking Eesti Keel by using Schwäbisch intonation. My friends told me that when I did, I sounded like I hailed from Saaremaa.
I am estonian and i seem to watch too much english videos. So i guess that's why my english is good. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand i'm a big fan of sharks, five nights at freddy's series and stranded deep.
I tell u something that you need to say to people in estonia:tere,head aega,mis teed & kus ma olen...and that is all you need when you go to estonia....i am estonian btw...thats why i know this stuff...
