Well done! My wife and I had a 1982 Westfalia Joker (the European equivalent to your Vanagon). We had it for 12 glorious years and I still miss it. Every year I had to do the "Michael Angelo" thing cleaning the mould from the roof and the canvas of the upper tent, as it lived outside. In the winter we would remove the upper matras to allow air to circulate a bit up there, but I still had to clean every year. Wishing you loads of fun with your van.

One of the very first youtubers
GoWesty has a middle mount position that you have to drill two bolt holes in the van, or a more forward position for even heavier loads. I have mine in this middle position and it's still easy to lower the top without anything on it and enough of a lift if I have the rack up there with a couple of surf boards on it.

Great video! Love that you were honest about it. I'm replacing the canvas in my '74 Westy, and I'm having such trouble with the corners, especially the back ones where it's more cramped (my pop up opens to the front of the bus). I've followed the directions exactly and have replaced the canvas in the exact same way as the previous one was installed. Mine is a screw in and similar to yours. I've got terrible near-vision too, so getting the screws into the railing, through the canvas, and into the screw holes on the bus body is a struggle with my terrible vision. Any tips for working for those back corners? Much appreciated!

how do you like closing your top now? Im over six foot and around two fitty and I have to hang from the top to close it. Removed the struts. Unless you have weight on their permantly I'd avoid these stupid things.

There's so much information about Vanagons, Westys, and the different years/engines. And if there is something you can't find info on, just ask a question and there are lots of people to help

Also has the suspension been upgraded?
One of the previous owners put in a 1.5" lift. Wheels are 16" but I don't know the tire size off hand. The circumference is very similar to stock, just slightly larger and wider

How are Westy's on gas? They are pretty big, but I think they have a small 4 cylinder engine.
Not great on gas. They're quite heavy when they're all loaded up and you're right, they have a 90hp 2.1L 4 cylinder engine. We average about 18-20 mpg
The canvas is not easy to replace. I did it once, will NEVER do it again! We didn't take the top off.

Yup, it is. Does your '82 not have one?
Mine does not have the vent I do not think. I just bought it but have no got it yet. The seller is delivering next week. I paid to have it inspected by a professional and he did a thorough job and sent picture of everything. I will keep you posted and will ask you questions when I need help. Yes I know Sombra.
