I never looked at the dislikes until I read the comments. How could anybody dislike a accurate and interesting and fantastically executed work of technical art? Anybody that dis likes this has no idea what a cool project it really is. Is their skill level and understanding so low that it doesn't register? I am going to guess anybody that dis likes it probably has trouble getting toilet paper to ball up.
As a professional cabinet/furniture builder I can get stuck in the same thinking day in and day out and focus on efficiency and making money. This was fun to watch. When someone works for years at woodworking you realize most things work from the same ideas and experience but the “out of the box” thinking here in this video is impressive and fun to watch. Great idea and great skill to make it all come together. I really enjoyed watching this.
Mark Spears I know what you mean. I have been in the custom woodworking biz for 25 years. I was drowning in a sea of raised panel doors and crown moulding. I had to find a way to separate my love of woodworking from the day to day “get it done” business side. It feels good to build things with no real purpose once in a while.
This is such a beautiful work of art. The hours taken to produce this is extraordinary, I played it on .25 speed , just so I could see how you did it, but even that wasn’t slow enough. I applaud you, it’s just magnificent the detail and the intricacy of it all. Kudos.xx
This is the easy way. But I once saw an old Japanese guy who took 300lbs of old lint and used toilet tissue and smooshed it into a big ball that over a period of ten years he then polished, kneaded, squished, and polished some more, into a ball of pure mirror glass. By the end of it, he had no fingers left. Amazing stuff. True craftsmanship. I heard he also kept little creatures called Gremlins.
25 seconds in you show the angel. ‘‘This is the angel of the table saw too. You have to flip the plywood over each time. To get the most out of one sheet of plywood and to get 12 you must have cut them at 3 7/8 the thickness of your blade. And I am a Cave man. You are good Carpenter.
Dude, kinda genius! Your shop equipment looks pro asf and well maintained. And anyone else get a small amount of anxiety when baby ball was rolling so close to the edge? Oh and pre-sanding the ball looks like a deathstar.
I'm a married man and have been working in woodwork for the last 70 years and this is by far the greatest thing I've ever seen in my life bar none, including my wife on her wedding day
I'm not a carpenter, but I made one of these balls last week, about 8" dia. from 60 triangles. It came up really well for a first try. No gaps or cracks. But I didn't have one of the fancy woodturning setups for making it round. I used a metal cone made from a small chimney flue cap, added a holesaw arbor and put a disc of 40 grit circular sandpaper inside the cone of the flue cap, with velcro dots. By just lifting and turning the ball under the spinning cone on a power drill until there were no more flat spots, it ensured that the ball came up perfectly round. A little more hand-sanding with the cone using 220 grit paper really smoothed it out. 3 coats of lacquer later and it looks like a shiny bowling ball with a magical pattern.
@@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams Yes that's right Keith. the 60 triangles made 12 pentagons. Credit where it's due. My wife saw your excellent video and 'persuaded' me to get involved in making one. The first challenge was to cut the ply into strips on the correct angle. A few years ago I found an el-cheapo Ryobi table saw (with a bent leg) in an industrial skip. So I repaired it for this job, powered it up and was able to cut 50mm wide strips with the 9º angle on both sides. Then with the correct secondary angles in a basic drop saw and a backstop, I could cut the triangles by flipping the strip with every alternate cut. Once I worked that out it went really fast to get the 60pcs. The pentagons all went together really tight on the first attempt. I just put the third coat of clear urethane on the ball and it has taken on an excellent golden colour. It is about bowling ball size. A pity I can't post pictures here. BTW We're a few km East of Melbourne. (Australia, not Florida) Cheers.
A Galah I’m impressed that you got it to work on the first try. I made quite a few before I even had one worth showing. I’d like to see it , send me a pic to oddballgallery@gmail.com
