  • This video shows how to build slideouts into your kitchen cabinets for your home, camper, RV or van - I show step by step how to make a slide-out for a Dometic refrigerator and a slide out for a custom built pantry to maximize kitchen storage. I also show how to remove the center stile and reverse the doors so that 2 doors can then open to provide access to all the space in the cabinet at the same time.

    Fine Homebuilding Magazine made the statement, what a carpenter had to know about building could be discovered if he could build a box with a lid. Joinery at the corners, attachment of the hinges to the lid and securing the bottom. Half blind dovetails, sunken piano hinges and false bottoms come later. You did an efficient and handsome job !!

      That is true! I always though building slideouts and drawers were for the professionals because it looked too intricate to do. Each little project gives you confidence to try a bit bigger one. I never dreamed I could build a kitchen - that was crazy to me. I still have not reached the point of cutting holes in the roof for the vent and holes for mounting solar panels. That will take some time to get the nerve up.

      Don't mean to slow your roll, but as my Dad pointed out to me, you MODIFIED your existing kitchen. Pouring a foundation, squaring, plumbing and bracing are a new level of difficult. I learned from TRYING to build a porch, if my foundation was plumb, squared and braced, I was on 3rd base. If I had to start with bare dirt, I was back in the 1st grade !! :-D

      I put off making this video for months because I was afraid this would be difficult. It really turned out much easier than I thought. Thank you! I am trying a different approach with the Ambulance on storage. As I live in it, I realize I need something. I bring it in and try to find a place to store it. If I can't find anywhere, then I build a space. I figure this way I will end up with only the things I need and just enough space to store them. Still need to figure out the best use of under sofa space. The sofa is too heavy to lift to get things out and too short for any sliding bins so fit under it. Will probably have to build something - that slides of course!

      Thanks! I was looking at my mother's kitchen which is quite large. Her under counter space is barely utilized, only things at the front by the doors. She says it is because it is too painful to stoop down and try to reach things in the back. That got me thinking on how to get to that space easily. Loosing the divider made it so much easier to build. Thanks for your comments and for watching!

      I really procrastinated on this project because I thought it would be hard or disasterious. It was neither. If you have a steady hand cutting the platforms, you can make this all with just a jig saw, pliers and a power screwdriver. Turned out to be a very fun project and got me thinking so I did a 3rd slide out on the other side. Will be in the sink video upcoming. Let me know how yours turns out!

      @timdillen  Před 5 lety +2

      Me too! I have put off the solar and the roof vent as I hate hate hate to cut holes in the roof. It will always eventually led to a leak. The caulks have improved but they all seem to eventually give out but you don't know it till the damage is done. I don't want to do the flat flex panels as they just don't last. I have a regular panel that will work great and already made brackets but just cringe at screwing it through my wonderful one piece aluminum non-leaking roof. would hate to use the adhesive tape and have it fly off and kill someone. But this will all have to be eventually done. I think I have room for at least 500 watts.

    I would have put the "door" of the pantry stuck to the "pantry" so one motion slide out... since your not using a "door" now anyhow at that point. ...otherwise did a cool job.. oh BTW the sliders are designed to be the way you installed them. The other way they don't provide the support and aren't rated for it. ...I'm a Network administrator and every time I've set up a server ... they are a couple of hundred pounds... always the sliders are "sideways" like the way you installed... because that provides the most support.

    But why wouldn't you leave the center cabinet support in place and do all your makings/ measurements before you cut it? That way you could of know where to place your add ons without wondering if it was going to fit? Lol!!
    I only said it because I did the same thing to my wardrobe closet so I could add a full width handmade dresser with 4 large wall to wall sized drawers and a shelving unit that goes from the top of the dresser to the ceiling but only half the width so I still had half the closet width for hanging clothes, broom, cordless vacuum, etc... its awesome 😉

      I just kinda liked the idea of having one large unobstructed opening. When I was at Lowes working with the cabinet person I did not factor in the huge chassis a/c unit. This had been a real pain to work with. I did the same cut on the left side where I made water tank storage and a clothes closet. Will be in the upcoming sink video. I still won't have hanging storage but being a guy that is not so much a problem other than work shirts - haven't figured that one out yet. May just have to be a bit wrinkled in the morning. I am hoping to do vacuum storage under the sofa. Haven't maxed that space out yet. Thanks for you comments and suggestions and for watching!

      ...I am trying a new process for the MAV build. I don't have a plan. I only plan about a week ahead of what I wan't to do. This way I figure the project will have room to evolve and take new turns that I would not have thought of. I am living in the MAV now so I look around at night and see what is really necessary. For example I don't cook much so a hide-a-way cheap gas burner stove stored below would be ok for me however I need a sink for cleaning dishes, washing hands, washing hair so that is a must at this point but I will design with only a temporary water tank but a permanent water pump. This way I can eventually add a proper water tank somewhere in the future. The drain will just go through the floor to the outside for now and later add the gray tank underneath when funds allow. Can put a bin under the drain outside, a bit of a pain but workable. It is also so much more fun to build this way as I get overwhelmed easily when I look at the big picture. I have never taken on so much before and I would seize up thinking about things at the beginning. I am at a good place now so the projects are very fun.

    Why not add that piece you jigsawed off, to the larger cabinet door (directly in front of fridge), instead of slide-out cabinet? That way when fridge opens/closes, only one cabinet door moves... It might get annoying after continual use (?), even though it works perfectly well as is.
