- A drum cover of one of my all-time favorite tracks of the 80’s (one of many I must admit). Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me)
Basically just another labor of love. It's a track I internalized as a kid and I just had to cover to get it out of me. ;)
Of all the 80’s songs I wanted to cover, this one was on the top of my list. And I’m glad to have finally done it.
YET!
I realized all the trickiness involved with the drumming on this track. Mel Gaynor is a very talented drummer! The hi-hat barks on the e's and a's for instance really had me practicing my hi-hat work. The funky touch but with a solid rock feel. The china crashes on the & instead of a regular crash. And of course That sweet &?%&*?% tasty fill in the bridge. When do we hear that anymore? All the little intricacies really had me listen to it again and again just to get it ALL RIGHT.
And yes, I am a huge fan of the movie. It is probably how I pulled off that line without any audio to listen to while I said it! You’re going to have to watch until the end to know what I’m talking about. ;)
In short, it was and still is a favorite movie.
So as usual, I hope this cover helps you get all the nuances and feel of the track on the drums. I hope to have made it justice and that you appreciate the work.

What gets me about this drum part is that it seems so simple yet there are more parts involved in it than you think

I used to play drum as a hobby way, way back like 25+ years ago. This song was one of my favorite covers but never got to perfect it. You just make it look so simple. Great work!

I feel like I remember seeing the drummer playing one hand in the hi hats but there’s definitely a backing track over dub so IF I’m correct about 1 hand on the hats it still sounds best with both hands live.

they're 8s - not 16s!!

I think the technical answer is that he did play 8s on record with a shaker overdub that made it sound like 16s. He’s played it with both 8s and 16s live. He plays it anyway he feels like.
