#HowToSingBetter #FreyaCasey #SingingTips - Hudba
Freddie wrote this song for her. He was in London, she was in Barcelona, so he made audio tapes, including her part, and sent them to her so she could learn it. She did suggest a few changes, which were made. He knew his range and hers and wrote accordingly. We Freddie fans see it as a masterpiece, brilliantly written and brilliantly sung.
Thank u for thiiis!!! I LOVE QUEEN AND MONTSERRATE 💘💘💘
Freddie cried when he first heard her sing it.
Montserrat was one of the greatest sopranos from the 20th century and, here, she had more than 50 years of age and 30 of career. She was clever enough to control the power of her voice in order to not overshadow Freddy who wasn't a classical opera singer (He sings mostly in the chest voice as pop and rock singers do). The song was made to blend their voices in their respective areas of singing. Period!!
Freddie and Montserrat were very good friends. He wrote this song specifically for them to sing together, thats why it works so well.
Montserrat Caballé The queen of the pianissimos
true! which is a testament to her legendary technique in her singing.. she knows control and that is not so easy to master.
❤️
But definitely not the queen of fortissimos...
Freddie Mercury had the most powerful voice I've ever heard. Montserrat Caballé had a pristine soprano.
Freddie wrote the song for her hometown, Barçelona.
Shut up ! Wanna listen ! Dissect it later , don't wanna hear u interrupting .. Constructive critisicm OK . but come on .... U just try show everybody ur classical singer ... That's not a reaction ! It was self promotion !
@@seanlynch6718 Lol...
@@seanlynch6718 what the hell? no need to be offensive
What’s even crazier is that he completely composed this song from start to finish along with the rest of the album (including Montserrat’s vocals even though they’d never worked together before) in about three months. That man was incredible.
Freddie Mercury no se puede comparar en ningún aspecto a quizás la mejor soprano que ha existido nunca. Montserrat lo opaca por completo...
I agree..in terms of pure vocal technique Caballe is one of the best in her field..her control and finesse in how she sings is legendary...and of course...that performance itself wasa testament to Freddie's artistic skill in composition..he has such a gift of combining different styles and tempos and everything making his rock seem almost operatic in grandeur.. he just doesn't scream out things for the sake of "rock", he finely chooses the tempo and the time when to soften, when to start ramping up, etc. BOTH of them are crazy good in their voice technique is all I can say :D
If I'm not wrong.... Freddie Mercury recorded the entirety of Montserrat Caballe part in a demo before he managed to meet her and record the song together.... So I believe the harmony and how the song is arranged are mostly Freddie's work.
Montserrat had an incredible vocal, even for a, very accomplished opera singer. Her ability to 'Flutter' around the top of her range, that odd yet beautiful wobbly nature to her top notes, when dramatic effect called for it, the resonance in her lower range, her (as Freddie was supposedly knocked over by when they recorded) level of volume control, infamously her ability to fade her vocal in and out without moving from the microphone... She's rightly considered one of the best vocalist of all time!
No wonder Freddie got enchanted by her performance among those he saw
Correct if wrong but I believe in one interview, after Freddie's death, Montserrat was speaking of their collaboration and said it was the most freeing time of her career. Apparently as an opera singer they have to control their voices just so. (Idk I have no experience with Opera) When she went to Freddie for direction of what he would like her to do with her voice he said that she was free to sing as she wanted. They really had a beautiful friendship.
When they sing in harmony, I get chills! Absolutely amazing!
Freddie was much more of a rock singer than a pop singer, dunno why but I felt the need to say that whenever you called him a pop artist haha. Not to say he couldn’t sing pop, he could sing anything; Exercises in Free Love is him basically being an opera singer for 5 minutes pretty flawlessly.
He was a glam rock singer who excelled almost as well in many other genres. Artists of that time were able to cover many genres in unique ways.

Caballe stated that Freddie conquered her. She was in utter amazement at not only what Freddie could do with his voice but his musical knowledge, his composing, it all just blew her away. Freddie never had vocal lessons and he was never trained. Reports are that they were planning to record Phantom of the Opera. Sadly, Freddie was already ill when he first met Cabelle.

This is a really great response- love it! But dont get into a debate with others who have a belief - it helps them - leave it at that!
For anyone piecing together this magnificent work that Montserrat and Fredyie did. together, as I have been doing, original interviews with Freddie, his people, and Monsie herself are all here on CZcams so we all can hear directly from the primary sources how this all came together. Plus it becomes very obvious if you compare Monse‘s demeanor in the Freddie videos with how she usually appears in her own concerts, she is truly ecstatic here. Plus they both have said that the love each other. So, what we have here are the rock world‘s top star using the last year of his performing life to compose for and perform with the top female opera star, perhaps ever, AND, the two of them being so obviously deeply in love with each other. As she puts it in one of her interviews, „He lov-ed me a lot, and I lov-ed him.“
Nice! You have a beautiful voice!!! A long time Queen fan, the songs with Montsy and Freddie introduced me to the world of opera, what a beautiful thing. I know they’re singing in heaven now, RIP both 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
It's amazing how they complement each other without turning off the other.. This is perfect
I can't believe you're doing reaction videos! Yay!
All goosebumping!!! They’re amazing !!!!
The miracle here is not Freddie, its Montserrat, most fully trained opera singers can not sing crossover, her voice here is magnificent.
Freddie is a pop singer, he hasn't the voice to sing anything else.
He's written this for both voices, and made a masterpiece.
Both have died now, so we'll never hear this again...
Freddie is a rock singer. Wtf are you talking about?
We lost the last Beethoven. Freddie mercury.

This is one of my favorite songs ever - used to listen to it as a small child and be in awe of the voices xx
Thanks for the pre-rehearsal breakdown of this... I can't wait to get to work on this with you! Jonny
Oh shut up. It’s a timeless masterpiece.
The Golden boy is well worth a watch, it's a mixture of Oprah and Gospel and works well
I would love to hear your comments on they singing "How Can I Go On" together. There is a moment when she seems surprised by what he could do with his voice.
@1:31 "It gives him a lot of space to climax later on" lady, are we watching the same video? lol XD
I love both singers immensely and what I love best about this video and Freddie is what he pulled from Ms. Caballe in her vivacity almost as a mirror image of his own. So different from what I've been used to seeing from her (not in a bad way..just different and a bit more reserved)
Thank you Freya. I love this kind of video, your video, with your reactions and comments about their voices and the way they sing
Micheal Bolton's foray into Opera with Pavarotti was impressive. I often wonder how Freddie would have sounded in his earlier years when he was more operatic.
What a beautiful song! I love when you do reaction videos, Freya! Thank you. More please. 😘
Rock composers hate it Opera purists hate it but lovers of music adore this recording.
Its a Shakespearean drama ... Street hero meets the greatest Diva of all time.

Nobody who hears this ever walks away unmoved by the passion and the power!
Those that compare Freddie and God in the same light are completely wrong, he is not a patch on Freddie!!!
I love everything about this song not least the bangin' orchestra. I'm not really a fan of Classical as such but I think the accessibility of this song helps
The thing I love about you and Ken joining the reaction community is that you have both given many singing tutorials on your channels over the years, so that gives us more to work with. I do learn so much from reaction videos, so I'm so glad you're doing them. In some ways they're more helpful, because they help you know how to sing songs that you might want to do covers of. So now we know how to approach them.

THIS DESERVES A GRAMMY,OSCAR,GOLDEN GLOBE AND PULITZER PRIZE!
The opera world itself wasn't really all that welcoming when Monsterrat Caballé and Freddie Mercury announced that they were going to record an album together. Birgit Nilsson (Swedish opera singer on par with Monserrat Caballé) who during a TV interview totally slayed Mercurys singing. She hadn't ever heard of him at all. The talk show was held just days after his death, so the topic was brought up in a bypassing mode even, and she went "Oh, so he is dead? well, did he scream himself to death, or what...?" Later she apologized that that was rude remark, but still maintained that she didn't call that singing at all, as opposed to Mrs Caballe's singing which she loved.
But that closed minded attitude was hampering Freddie Mercury and Caballé recording sessions for the "Barcelona" album they actually got in touch with several big orchestras and well known conductors to make that album happening. But as soon as Mercury's name was dropped they'd all back away, the SHAME of having to work with a "ROCK" singer was too much to bear. So in the end the entire album was recorded using a couple of open minded classically trained musicians and a LOT of synthesizers which accomplished the full orchestral sound on that album.
UNTIL 2012 when Stuart Morley who is the arranger for Queen's musical "We will rock you" decided to give that album the full orchestral treatment it deserved.
Another guy who found out about the Snobbism of classical arrangers is Axl Rose, when he tried to get an orchestra playing on "November rain" everywhere he tried they told him "No way, we're not going to work with a Rock band!" In the end he send everybody out of the studio for a month and did all the orchestrations himself using synthesizers, which took forever but the result is worth it.
That bitch probably didn't even heard "exercises in free love" it's all sung by Freddie who never received formal opera training, plus he was having bad effects of AIDS
Also ensueno in which Freddie sings with his "normal voice" Freddie could've had been an opera singer if he wanted to. I hate these music elitist they can all go to hell. I liked Montserrat because he looked like a really nice person
Had to comment! One thing, first reaction video that pronounced her name properly!!! Thank you xxx
Freddie wrote the song (and actually a full opera/album..) - presented it to Montserrat - as I understand sang to her not just his part but HERS... he was such a fan, and worried that she would not be interested in a collaboration, but they became great friends... I was saddened to hear that we lost "Montsy" --as he called her - recently --
When they first met he presented her with “Exercises in Free Love” which is on most of the streaming services now but not a full opera album yet. He asked her if she wanted to do an album together and he was shocked that she said yes. That’s when she told him she wanted a song about her hometown. He then composed what would be the Barcelona album in about three months. Pretty amazing.
I know that Freddie was a great opera fan. I understand that he never had professional singing lessons because he didn't want to lose his own natural sounds. He seems to have accomplished much with his singing just by experience. He sometimes instinctively did the right things and got the result, sometimes he didn't do them the "right" way but still got the results!
Peerless fearless .. explored the possibilities of Rock📢 0pera ..Freddy Mercury
Yes, everything I listen to this CD I think how fortunate it was that Freddie was able to do this. It must have been one of the great highlights of his life.
It really shows how music can be enjoyed together in two diff styles,,
Epic performance!😙..nice reac Freya, you really know the subject.we are learning.💟
there are some people and bands you just don't critique, Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe are certainly 2 of those. Seems to me ego gets in the way and want to show their vocal skills like you kept on doing in the video. ( No insult intended)
This must have been the highlight of both their careers - absolutely brilliant and timeless. Thanks for your analysis - I'm always happy to learn something new!
No it didn’t. This was Freddie’s song and he actually sang both parts when presenting the song
I've listened this awful year to many reactions this is my first with you. You sing so good. Happy New Year
Love your explanation
I find it easier to cry through it rather than dissect it. Hope that helps.
I wish you could react after the video. Remember this is not about teaching the viewers about vocal work in a song..but more about sensing your reaction.
The way you set up the video,it is more about analysing what you see, than reacting.
Tor Ivar Sæternes agreed I also feel like it’s a showcase for her voice I came here for a reaction video not a singing lesson
One of the better reactions all in all.
Love your reaction videos and you also look beautiful! Thank you!
This song always brings me tears of joy.... Now they're singing in Heaven... Much love from Puerto Rico...❤️🇵🇷
It starts "really softly" because Montserrat Caballé was a bel canto soprano. That's her style, and Freddie wrote the song to accommodate her talent. Please know your subject before you try to discuss it.

Well, Monserrat loved Freddy very much - he considered him a genius and an extremely lovable man.

As far as "pop singer" difference... check out "exercises in free love" by Freddie...
Also, please, a reaction to Excersises in Free Love, a song my Freddie Mercury, without lyrics, were he sang complete in Falsetto, and that he wrote specially as a present to Montserrat Caballe. It was relise in 1992 and is here on CZcams.
A little background: She loved it so much that want it to include it in the album. They added lyrics, change it quite a bit and, as it was a gift to Montserrat, he sang it completed in spanish (language limitated him a little, but was a great song). This version is the song Ensueño, in Barcelona Album. Although nobody know the original until after Mercury death, Caballe loved so much that she also include it as a bis in one of her recitals in 1987 (i dont remember if Mercury was present).
@Sebastian Greco If I'm remembering rightly Freddie had Mike Moran play the song for her when they met (it was the b-side of The Great Pretender') and she announced she would give it a 'world premiere' when she sang at Covent Garden Opera House. Freddie was in the audience and had to take a bow when she announced it!
@@shaitarn1869 About the Covent YES!!!! I couldnt remember but yes, that was it. About Mike Moran, it could be that he played it at piano (later on Montserrat said that freddie was a great Chopin interpreter, full of that emotional needed for Chopin, and piano player, but not sure about his talent at the piano, so it was a little later that she could enjoy him at the piano, not in the first days). But i think that Montserrat said that the first time they were together Freddie carrying "the gift" of the song and that he had wrote it for her. So i asume that he was carrying a record make on studio for her, probably thinking that he will gave it to her, and she listened later.
But i could be wrong. I must find that interview.
Sorry for my bad english.
@@shaitarn1869 is there a recording on youtube?
Ty so much for this react. I really recommend you to listen the complete Barcelona album, as well as the "Freddie Mercury Rarities: The Barcelona Sessions" (both found complete in this site) when you found the working in the album, early versions, alternatives, and the works in the songs by Freddie, were, for example, he sings the Caballe parts in fasetto when she wasnt in studio. A great example of this is the early versions of Rachmaninov's Revenge and The Golden Boy.
Sebastian, Thank you, thank you, thank you. I wasn't aware of the Barcelona Sessions and I've listened to all of the recordings several times already. It's amazing how I think I've discovered all there is, about Freddy, on YT, then you share this treasure.

That was filmed at Font Magica in Barcelona and it beautiful! When I lived there I would go just to see fountain show with this song!
When Freddie presented this song to her,he sang both parts, his part and her part to her
Freddie wrote an entire opera --"Barcelona" was the title of the piece.. and this song.. but they worked together on many others.. gotta love "the golden boy" - and also "how can I go on" -- esp. in How can I go on -- Montsy is so entranced that she cannot help lip-synching to Freddie... he wrote them all... inspired by her.. and I think she really enjoyed the exploration of how her talent could be used in more types of music.. pop, blues, gospel (Golden Boy...) I think Freddie showed her how to have a little more "fun" with music...

They are mot singing live here, they're lip syncing. Freddie was diagnosed in 87 and he started having trouble with his voice because of it, so I guess he didn't want to risk it. They still sound very very beautiful though. I love them together ❤
How is this possible in 87 starded having trouble and stills recording and make album until 1991 the last album innuendo ???

@@teotheo6598 he didn't (or should I say couldn't) do live singing or touring or concerts anymore. He wanted to work on songs till he died (as the comment above mentions some of them), so he probably didn't want to risk it here. Idk.
this isnt strictly true, freddie's last live performance was in 87, a duet with cliff richard, in which his voice was actually in brilliant shape, far better than during the magic tour
@@rorymcgrath1212 Yeah I know, he had rested his voice then but I don't thunk he did any high notes, he sounded pretty mellow. In Barcelona he had to go high and really use slot of power. Somfone actually said in a documentary that he didn't wanna risk anything. I think it was Monserrat herself actually. If his voice was all fine then he would've sang it live, but he didn't in any of performances they did, so....

it wasn't distortion, it was subharmonics
There is a short clip of Frida Lyngsted of ABBA singing Opera, she was a classically trained singer but very seldom expressed that way of singing.
But if there's one singer I'd like to see you react to, it's Nina Hagen and her song "NatürTrane" she was a classically trained singer too but combined her very impressive soprano with Punk rock.
I think what you're hearing is the difference between classical training and a rock and roll star. Wings of Pegasus did a review of this and showed the difference between classical vibrato versus natural Rockstar vibrato. When you set them side by side if you didn't believe that's the way it was you believe it was mechanically manipulated
This must be one of the most amazing duets in musical history (if not THE most amazing one) and it pains me just to think of it that both of them are singing for the angels now. I really enjoyed your commentary on two very different voices, styles, mannerisms.
