    Team Lorelai. She goes to her parents for help, trusts them enough to tell them what's going on, and asks them to help her keep Rory in school, and they promised her they were on her side and would be a team, then the minute Rory goes crying to them, they stabbed her in the back. Every single time they prove she can't trust them. So props to her for this move. Little petty, maybe but screw it.

      School is what Lorelei wanted. Rory needed a break. She went back when she was ready and was able to start performing well. Making her go too soon would not have set her up for success. Was this an ideal way to go about it no. But Lorelei was far from perfect as a mom. In this instance her parents were right.

      @LizzieHunterPaul Před 2 měsíci +36

      And yet Rory stabs her grandparents in the back of her own accord and had Colin and Fynn move her stuff out knowing full well it would hurt them and that had nothing to do with Lorelei. And no one gives Lorelei props for forcing everyone to apologize to one another and clear the air. Not to mention she was jumping up and down trying to warn them about that blackmail internship that her grandparents told Rory to take. The fandom loves to blame her for everything but she had no parts in that dumpster fire of a year off Rory took. There are so only so many red flags you can show to a person who doesn’t want to listen.

      @@LizzieHunterPaul pretty sure most of the fandom who grew up watching the show idealized their mother/daughter relationship and presently people love to hate on Emily. Which that parent cold dynamic is not healthy and only works on tv. But that’s a different discussion.
      Rory regressed substantially through the later seasons of the show and no her grandparents weren’t perfect either. And her mother throwing a tantrum for a year by not being involved with her daughter was not helpful either. If I would have dropped out of college because I was struggling and moved in with my grandparents and my mother were to cut me off because it wasn’t her plan I would be so incredibly hurt. Wouldn’t you be?

Then she had the nerve to lounge about in their poolhouse all summer while avoiding being honest with everyone about the REAL reason why she left school. Rory needed a metaphorical kick in the a$$, which she eventually got in the form of Jess wondering what in the heck she was doing with her life.

    It was burnout.
    Rory was raised to think she was a bright star and could do no wrong and do easy.
    She did work hard was also handed everything to her.
    She did not know how hard it was gonna be and how cruel people were.

      She was doing well at University and was great at her involvement at the uni paper. She just couldn't handle a little criticism. That wasn't a good reason to drop out. Also, she didn't have a plan on what to do when she dropped out.

    • @donttrip49956
      @donttrip49956 Před měsícem +7

      @@Mario-du6djshe was burned out. It’s so clear. She’s been working hard since she was 3 years old and always praised and pushed towards academic excellence. I also think being a journalist is not really her dream, it’s just what she’s been working hard for since forever that she has to pull through with it. A life path was chosen for her because she said so when she was a kid but she actually grew out of it but didn’t have any other choice than to commit cuz everyone’s put so much into this path. So there’s probably not so much satisfaction in it other than pleasing others.
      Finds out everyone in uni is just as smart as her, probably didn’t even need to work as hard as she did. She was extremely overwhelmed and on survival mode in Yale, you can see it from her going back to Dean, struggling with doing the same as her grandpa did. I honestly think she’s not naturally gifted and smart like other kids are, she just had to work harder to get there.
      She pushes herself to work at the news as well and tries so hard to be good at it and gets told everything she’s ever worked for her whole life is something she’s not meant for. She knows this deep down too. In her overwhelmed burnt out state, that was the final straw.
      That’s why she’s still burnt out and struggling in the revival. She felt pressured to fit in a mold that her mother insists for her since 3 years old and she grew out of that dream. She should 100% be a writer, and we can see her starting to heal when she starts writing a book and let go of being a journalist.

      Rory never thought she was a bright star. She always thought she was behind academically that’s why she pushed herself constantly. She never thought she was good enough which might stem from the abandonment by her father. People were always talking down on her for being the illegitimate child of an unwed teenager. I think once she got to Yale and hung out with Logan and his friends she saw how they hardly ever attended class or studied and they had everything handed to them.

    The reaction to her parents is about the betrayal she feels that when she requested emotional support, they agreed then backstabbed her and undermined her right as a parent. To react and advise her daughter on her terms. Burnout happens but Rory did not state she was burned out. She said she got a bad review and her dreams were dead. Not exactly mature or logical reactions. Grand theft boat also didn’t help in showing a mature decision was being made.

    Is Lorelai really getting into a fight with her parents over choices Rory is making? Rory, the adult?
    Look, maybe Richard and Emily are making a mistake in letting Rory move in with them, but that's between them and Rory. I think Lorelai's really angry that, for the first time, she can't get between the parents she still resents and the child she didn't raise very well.

    Watching this show originally was wonderful. Now, L&R have such an unhealthy mother/daughter relationship. Logan was bad news from the start. Jess turned out better than expected. Jess pushed Rory to be better. Lorelei never truly grew up and as a result, she kept Rory immature in a way.

    Neither the mother nor the grandparents were perfect however in this instance the grandparents were correct. Rory really needed to take that year off and her mother was to far up her own rear end to see that her daughter was at breaking point. Not everyone can handle college or even consecutive years in college.
    Honestly whoever came up with the idea that 17-18 year olds should be making irreversible life decisions and putting themselves in life long debt was ignorant. They cant even drink or smoke till 21.

      rory didn’t want to take a year off of yale, though. she wanted to quit all together simply because someone told her that she didn’t “have it”. several times throughout her time off, she said she quit for good and she’s never going back. lorelai was completely correct, and the only reason rory even went to her grandparents was because she was angry that her mom didn’t blindly support her every decision and mistake, which is what people accuse lorelai of doing a lot when that’s clearly not the case. you made valid points about rory being young, but you are giving her far too much credit here. she had no logical reason to drop out of school.

      The grandparents were in the wrong and said as much themselves when they saw how far Rory regressed under their roof. Lorelei wanted to practice tough love and make Rory support herself if she insisted on quitting Yale. Lorelei was trying to teach Rory not to give up the first time she is criticized, but her grandparents enabled that very childish reaction.

      Strong women raise strong women. I know I am one. It's not easy to be a strong woman and it's ever harder to raise one. Emily tried the smother route and it pushed Loralie away. So Loralie went the GF route. She was doing a great job for a while. To become a strong woman you must come to a point in your life where it is sink or swim. Where you need to go own way. This was Rory's defining moment. She floundered. Loralie was hanging tough but Emily and Richard wanted to protect her. If they would have let Rory sink she would have had to pull herself out of it, and she would have. rory took the easy way out. This was where I really stopped liking Rory.
