The Negative Aspects Of My Autism Diagnosis (With PANS & Tourette’s)

  • An Autism diagnosis is a blessing for a lot of people as it gives them the answers they need, gives them the ability to request accommodations, and gives them the ability to understand themselves. However, the stigma and negative attitudes around Autism can lead to some negatives - such as medical gaslighting, medical neglect, and assumptions being made about an individual based on their diagnosis. This is my experience.

I am also an autistic person who does not like routines, I don't like change, but I do not fixate on repetition and the timing of events. I suspect that I am time-blind to a considerable extent. I didn't realise I was autistic, and subsequently sought diagnosis, until I was 59. I always more or less coped in society. I became relatively stoical and somewhat toughened by interacting with NT society. I wonder if a childhood or teenage diagnosis would have been more detrimental than useful?

    Well spoken!!!
Thanks for sharing. Can you PLEASE tell me the treatment for PANDA? I think my son has it but the doctor said it's part of autism and there's no cure anyway. But is there?🙏🙏🙏

PANDAS is treatable - usually with antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and immunomodulatory interventions like IVIG. There are also some natural interventions like supplements that can help some people as well. The PANDAS Physician Network website has a lot of information on conventional treatments. The ASPIRE pans website has blog posts from families where children were misdiagnosed with Autism, but then found out about PANDAS/PANS and experienced a reduction in symptoms so they may be interesting to read as well.
