    Hey Tom! Thanks for all of your reviews. It's cool to "go back in time" and see what games have really endured. I think that Robinson Crusoe is one of those. I really appreciate being able to do solo missions.

    Helpful comparison to a great game.
    I also noted that the 3 event decks for building, exploring and hunting (if I recall), sorry I can't recall the exact name for these decks. Anyway, I noticed the colours are much better. The original nice and card backs were pastel shades, and being colour blind they sometimes caused issues from across the table. The new shades seem much more vibrant.

    No reason to purchase the new version if you already own the game. The new rule book is available as free pdf download as are the stickers and scenarios on bgg...that primarily leaves just the food and wood which can be puchased from portal. ...and you get to keep your nicer box art ;^)

    "The changes are not massive. Definitely, the new edition is way better than the first one."
    Still scratching my head at how you can say those two sentences consecutively and have them both be true.

    • @shaynejudkins1605
      @shaynejudkins1605 Před 7 lety +5

      Jeremy Sexton I thought the same thing. But after further consideration I believe Tom was just pointing out that while the changes were "small" the result of those changes was "large". (For instance. Take the rule book... Personally I never had a problem with the old one but if someone finds it to be a "large" improvement, that "small" change could be considered a "large" improvement, since the rule book is probably the second most important component in a board game, just behind the actual "board".) ;)

    • @johna6108
      @johna6108 Před 7 lety

      Jeremy Sexton for example, if all the cards were written in Spanish with a reference sheet but were now changed to English, the change would be relatively minor (translating cards) but the effect is massive.

    Love your channel! I'd love to see a new series where you and the guys talk about older games (5+ years old) that you've already reviewed but haven't played or even mentioned in a while. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the current state of the game, whether you still love it, etc. Anyway, keep up the great work!

    Nice intro!
    The changes are generally really nice. One thing I'd like to add is that I actually think the board is not very great quality compared to some other games. It isn't 'hinged' (I don't know what it's exactly called), so it feels like it might get torn apart more easily, and it also doesn't sit very flat on the table for me.

  • @vojtasjedyny
    @vojtasjedyny Před 7 lety +5

    0:37 Gameplay isn't similar. It's absolutely the same. That's why it's hard to consider this version as 2.0. It's more like 1.5. IMO it is worth to get it, if you haven't bought it yet obviously.

  • @Deaddinoproductions

    Love the 1st ed box art. I never owned the game but that box design made me want to own it. The new one looks like the kind of stereotypical artwork that you see on a lot of Euro games. It's pretty generic and uninspired and actually confused my brain when I first saw it... I couldn't quite believe that THAT design was the brand new reprint version. There are other games like Fury of Dracula that have been guilty of this too and it's not a huge deal, but makes me just a wee bit less motivated to pick up the new edition. Everything else about it looks like an improvement though.

  • @vic7000
    @vic7000 Před 7 lety +6

    Thanks Tom, very helpful. Completely disagree about the artwork on the new box - think it isn't a touch on the original box, which was beautiful. But the new size is certainly better, and the other upgrades are improvements too. But the new box art is probably bad enough for me to stick with my old version though!

    thank you so much for doing this. I was so mad when I heard they were coming out with a new "upgraded" version as I had just bought the original not a month before I heard about the new edition, lol. now I feel better knowing that it's not that much of an upgrade. I actually think I like the old box art better and the rules difference doesn't really make a difference to me as I know how to play. thanks again!

    @GeorgeZupster Před 7 lety +6

    There is one MAJOR change, and it is price, in EU it costs 20 to 25% LESS than Z-man version, it si very good to see that some publisher like Portal, Iello, CGE and some others put fair price on their products, on other specter you have Asmodee, pure greed, just numbers, zero love for products or board gaming

    I picked up a copy of the Newer edition, and it is great! Love the game play, and really appreciate the upgrade from cubes and the inclusion of stickers for the discs, these small touches really do help pull me into the theme and story of the game. I'm not sure I agree on the box art, I like the new edition, but I prefer the Characters on the box. The newer box art does give the idea of being stranded alone on an island, where the older box art hinted at the depth of story the game provides. I do prefer the newer box shape as it fits better with my other games. A top 10 game for me for sure! Thanks Tom and DIce Tower people for cluing me in!

    ...Not sure if it's worth getting the upgrade kit when that comes out, if basically all it gets me is some stickers and a promo scenario (While I haven't upgraded the resources specifically, I use the Stonemaier treasure chests with it), and a better written rulebook that I no longer need since I've learnt the damn thing...

    Just what I needed ! I got the expansion of the other on (Beagle..) and I'm wondering whether or not to go for the new one. Is the new rule book available as a PDF ? Is First Martians going to be like this Robinson Crusoe game but set in Space ? I'm sure I saw an early version of the game and it looked nothing like RC.

      That seems to be the popular opinion, but I really do like the new one better. I mean, the old one had this odd cartooney style, while inside the box everything looked more 'serious' (except the characters maybe). Now it's more consistent, and I simply like the new style better.

    Still don't get how the first box art has so much love. The game title is a horrible mess. Way too much going on. plus it's dark and muddy looking. I get that it's all subjective, but I would rank it among my least liked box art. Seriously though, I dislike the game title on the first box A LOT. Just awful.
    Plus the second box looks more like an island. First one just looks like they have discovered some lost valley.
