- 27-year-old Bijiyashanthi Tongbram from Manipur is India's only Lotus Silk extractor. A Botany graduate near Loktak Lake, she began spinning yarn from lotus stems in May 2019, producing items like neckties and mufflers with local women. Her enterprise, ‘Sanajing Sana Thambal,’ now involves around 60 women. Lotus silk, known for its high cost and labor-intensive production, is a rare art practiced in only Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Bijiyashanthi's work, recognized by the Prime Minister in 'Mann ki Baat', has also won the 'Mapping the Change-maker of Northeast Region' competition, highlighting her contribution to preserving this unique craft and empowering her community.

I was always fascinated by the fact that manipuri people are vaishnava despite of being a small tribe.
