    Seles was such a phenomenal tennis player. Not to diminish Graf's accomplishments, but at the moment of the stabbing Graf was sitting at 11 singles grand slams after being on the tour since the early 80's. Whereas after only a few short years on the tour, Seles had already amassed 8 singles grand slams. No one to this day in the open era has won as much and as fast as Seles did from the moment they turned professional. Truly is a shame that the stabbing changed not only her momentum, but the course of tennis history in general. And still to this day, other than Serena Williams, no one has been able to win 9 singles grand slams even after all of these years. Imagine what her record could have been. One thing is for certain, we were all robbed of a rivalry that could have been similar to Evert and Navratilova.

      @jamesr2164 - You are exactly right. Sadly, young people who never got to see Seles play will never realize not only how great she was, but also how mentally tough she was. In my opinion, Graf would no way have 22 Majors had Monica not been stabbed, and conversely Monica would have way more than 9 Majors. What a senseless tragedy by that deranged German who wanted Steffi #1 by any cost, including stabbing Monica. She was never the same after that incident.

    • @jujumusique1305

      Another interesting consideration is that Graf was up 9-0 vs Seles in slam titles in the spring of 1990 and 11-8 in the spring of 1993. Any honest person can do the math. And while it’s impossible to predict that Seles would keep winning 3 slams per year, it’s highly unlikely that she would win none of the 10 slams she missed.

    • @jamesr2164
      @jamesr2164 Před rokem +4

      @@jujumusique1305 That is exactly right, and that is the statistics that I put forth. In the spring of 1990 Graf had been on the tour for 5 years, where as Seles had been on the professional tour for 1 year, but at the 1990 French Open that Spring (in only Seles' 4th grand slam attempt), she beat Graf to win her first grand slam and then by the 1993 Australian Open, she had already won 8 Singles Grand Slams, beating Graf in the final in 3 out of their 4 grand slam final meetings before the stabbing. No one in the open era has won as much and as fast as she did from the moment they turned professional (not Navratilova, Evert, Graf, or even Serena). I'm not sure if that upset you to hear that fact, or you were somewhat agreeing, but that is all that I was stating. Which is all true. 👌

    Their quality of rally does not match their age, going way beyond! Single-handed backhand slice by Graf is more than a defensive shot. Seles was forced from time to time to improvise single-handed forehand, but she did it pretty well, even produced a stunning passing shot. Their contributions to women's game are incalculable. She was 3-1 up on Graf in slam finals, was #1 in the world, had won 8 of last 9 slams and Graf herself said she had no answer to her game. Love this highlight reel ❤such good quality and you included a lot of good points not in other highlight reels of this classic match ..IMonica tried to hit harder when she returned in 95 to compensate for her lack of match play and fitness , it caused a lot of errors as she could no longer play defence as she showed in this match ..she also anticipated so well ….Her three years of dominance ( yes minus Wimbledon fair point to Graf fans but she was dominating everywhere else) she hit hard but it was her tennis mind which was the best she knew when to go for it and when to let the opponent best themselves .. it’s funny as both her and Novak Djokovic had the same tennis coach. I believe when they were younger and they both have an amazing quality of letting the other player basically meltdown with their incredible consistency and power ..so I see a lot of similarities there if she wasn’t stabbed, they would’ve been so many more slams and great matches with Graf/Hingis/ Sabatini/Davenport/sanchez Vicario and Martina Navratilova we were robbed of all of that. But love these highlights it showed a smarter approach to Graf which was to break down the backhand ( unlike their two previous slam matches where Monica hit way too much to grafs forehand) Seles here also pumped up her serve ..it never looked this good again after she returned … so recent interview with Monica and Chris Evert, and she said she finally figured out the best play the best way to place Steffi Graf in the Australian open and that was going to be the plan moving forward. I think she would’ve dominated graf at 93,94 and who knows how many other players
