      I wasn't a fan of her coach's choice to make her vault again.

    • @MonumentToSin
      @MonumentToSin Před 10 lety

      Flikz Factory After her initial injury there was too much adrenaline for her to see it was a break. She probably thought she had pulled a muscle, at most fractured something. And to her, the gold was more important.

    • @flikzfactory
      @flikzfactory  Před 10 lety +3

      sniperchic95 Wasn't her "choice". In the words of Strug's coach, "Kerri, we need you to go one more time. We need you one more time for the gold. You can do it, you better do it." The coach put accolades above Kerri's health.

    • @MonumentToSin
      @MonumentToSin Před 10 lety +6

      You need to remember the mind set of these Olympians. Even if her coach did say that, Kerri didn't need him to tell her to do that. Athletes of that caliber hate allowing injuries to hinder them. To this day if you ask Kerri what she thinks, she will say she would have done it again with no second thoughts.

    I think the most remarkable Olympic moment is Bob Beamon's amazing 1968 long jump which shattered the world record by almost two feet, a record which stood for 23 years. It still stands as the Olympic record, 48 years later...

    Jason Lezak was the monster on that 4x100 medley relay. His performance not only won the gold, but was one of the greatest individual feats in the history of the Olympics. His finishing kick was legendary. He belongs on Olympus right alongside Phelps.

    Just a few other greats
    Bob Beamon’s world record jump at the 1968 Mexico City games. His reaction to the distance still touches my heart.
    Muhammed Ali lights the Atlanta flame. No one knew who was going to light the flame and all the lead up. Then to see Ali, proud and vulnerable.
    The Queens entry into the London games opening ceremony. The entire crowd gasped when the stunt woman jumped out of the helicopter and cheered wildly when she entered the stadium. Simply the greatest entry into an event ever
    Jamaican bobsled team and Eddie the Eagle. No they didn’t win but they did remind the world that it’s the competition that’s important.
    Jesse Owens wins the 100 meters (and Ralph Metcalf comes in second) at the Berlin Olympics. We all know about Jesse, but Ralph used his event to springboard into a life of civil service in Chicago.
    Joan Benoit wins the marathon at the Los Angeles games.

    The only person who came out publicly to harshly scold Bolt about celebrating the 100m was Jacque Rogge, president of IOC at the time. He called Bolt unsportsmanlike but that didn't stop him from interrupting Bolt's training to use him to advertise the 2012 London Games.
    Also noticed no one in a position of authority said a word when the German hurdler slapped away the Jamaican who had tried to congratulate her at last year's WCs, and that no one said a word at the unsportsmanlike behavior of the US athletic team who got so upset that Gatlin wasn't able to defeat Bolt that they demanded separate buses, separate hotels and blatantly refused to drink any Gatorade which had Bolt's face on it. Where was the finger pointing and scolding then? Not a peep from anyone.

    Personal thanks for the Olympic's video moments; as a gymnastic's fan (especially the floor and the uneven bars), I watched Nadia Comencia early in life and loved her performances. She was one of a class of gymnasts, including Mary Lou Retton, who stunned the world with their elegance, beauty and strength! New win for African Americans in this sport in 2016. I wish our memories were longer for great Olympic moments ... the modern Olympic Games began in 1896, and all we seem to focus on are the most recent events. I respect that the creators of videos are entitled to their own opinions about what qualifies as their own personal favorites ... I just wish more incredible moments were listed from Games prior to our lifetimes. Did you know Kerri Strug was not the only gymnast to land on an injured leg? I recall seeing footage of a male gymnast from Japan who dismounted after his routine on the Rings, landing on an already broken leg to win a gold medal. And the 1960 US Men's Hockey Team (yes,1960 - not a typo) pulled off an accomplishment equal in every respect to the celebrated 1980 team by (1) against all odds, upsetting the Russians, and (2) later winning the Gold Medal. I could go on and on, but the point is ... the Olympics have a long & rich history I wish more of us could recognize & appreciate.

      Also in Vancouver Anja Pärson won a bronze in the combined alpine skiing event one day after crashing in the last jump of the downhill event. Just prior to the jump she got down in a compression resulting her to fly up like a spring falling about 60 meters down the hill. Amazingly she suffered no severe injuries, but many minor bruises that really hampered her performance in the combine event. She and Petra were true heroes of those Olympics :)

      Isn't this just for the summer games? I would think that if winter games were being included that the miracle on ice would also have made the list.

  • @gionncaomhinmorpheagh4791

    For me, the greatest Olympian bar none is the speed-skater Eric Heiden at Lake Placid in 1980. There are only five disciplines in speed-skating, from 500m to 10,000m, and they all had their specialists, for instance, the Dutchman Ard Schenk - world record-holder over 10,000m. Eric Heiden entered all five events and not only won all the fucking gold medals going, but also set four world records and an Olympic record! That is truly legendary stuff.

    Gerard van Velde who won 1000m ice-skating in 2002. He won this on the old fashioned ice-skates that were actually much slower. He was the only one using them, setting a new world record. On the question why he was using them he said in his down to earth manner: "I just don't like em." He became one of the biggest ice-skating legends because of this win.

    @ianraper4304 Před 8 lety

    Interesting title and content. Certainly agree that these are some great Olympic moments (the numbering is not a ranking - merely showing five great athletes and their achievements) and there are still plenty more available. In the late part of last century (1980s?) there was an often featured short documentary called Olympic Minutes (if memory serves correctly) in the lead-up to many games. It was great to see the likes of Paavo Nurmi, Jesse Owens, Johnny Weissmuller and Emil Zatopek feature - along with Mark Spitz and Nadia Comaneci of the modern era (Carl Lewis, Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps arrived later and their achievements are quite remarkable also). As for the finest moments - well I am probably biased but I believe Jon Sieben in the 200M Butterfly in 1984 and Debbie Flintoff-King in the 400M hurdles in 1988 were special.

  • @firstbornjordan
    @firstbornjordan Před 8 lety

    Today we live in a junk food, short attention span, world. Give it to me quick, and give it to me now:UNPARALLED: "On 29 September 1951, Emil Zatopek became the first person to run 20
    kilometres in under one hour and broke four world records in one
    breathtaking race. By the end of 1953 he held eight world running
    records-the only man in history to hold so many records at the same
    time. In total he set 18 world records. In 1952, Emil Zatopek achieved one of the greatest Olympic feats of all
    time - something that will probably never be reproduced. He won gold in
    the 5km, 10km and then at the last moment decided to run his first ever
    marathon. Despite no previous experience at the distance he won the race
    [slicing six minutes off the world record]. This triple gold remains an unprecedented
    achievement. The amazing feature of this Olympics was that two months
    before the Olympics, doctors advised him not to race because of an
    infected gland. Zatopek ignored the doctors’ advice." TIME FOR A CONTRAST: "At one stage in the 1960s, Ron Clarke, the Australian, held every world record from two miles
    to 20 kilometres - an achievement surpassing that of the great distance
    runner Paavo Nurmi. In 1965, at the peak of Clarke’s career, he
    competed 18 times in eight countries during a 44-day tour of Europe -
    and set 12 world records, nine of which were established within 21 days. FACT: After being invited to an athletics meeting in Prague by Emil Zatopek, on his way home on the plane ... "He determined that under no circumstances would he open the small
    package given to him by zatopek, until he was back on the ground in London, at least on friendly,
    familiar territory, where he would be able to cope with whatever it
    was. But somewhere over the English Channel he could resist no longer.
    Looking surreptitiously over his left and right shoulder to see no one
    was watching, he fished the package out of his pocket and opened the
    little box inside. It gleamed back at him. It was an Olympic gold medal,
    the very same that Zatopek had won in the 10,000m at the 1952 Helsinki
    Olympics. It was even newly inscribed, To Ron Clarke, July 19, 1966,
    with Zatopek's final words on the plane steps coming to him, "Not out of
    friendship, but because you deserve it". Clarke never won Olympic gold.

Dominating all forms of swimming and distances is no easy feat.

Phelps was dedicated since he was a teen and trained everyday, until he knew he was the best then he started skipping or coming late to practices. Phelps was the anchor on these teams. If you're ever competed on a swim team, you would realize how big that is.
    Bolt is 80% talent...he wins races after eating McDonald's for one. Phelps is 80% work ethic and dedication. I think I see the more deserving. Don't get me wrong, Bolt's records are impressive, but all he has to do is run and run the same way in each race. Phelps has to train to master multiple swimming disciplines.

    If Mark Spitz didn't have an epic mustache he would have won 8 golds.

    Would expect that Steve Redgrave will be one of the last 3 or 4 torch bearers prior to the lighting of the flame during the opening ceremonies. Perhaps even 2nd to last. Enjoyed your list. I think my top 2 would be Beamon and Bolt.

    I would have to say USA's 1996 athlete Kerri Strug needs to be in the top 5.

    You forgot Kerry Strug in Atlanta 1996.
    Kerry's performance tops all these people.

    Yeah, Spitz definitely deserves mention, but I felt his accomplishments redundant with those presented for Phelps.

    Felix Sanchez 400 men's hurdle in London. After forgettable performance in Beijing and at his age no one tought he would even get a medal in London.

    There are a few..."At rest" for Derek Redmond, "Tafi Maradi" for Usain Bolt, and "Long Road Ahead" for Steve Redgrave.

    Dude how do you not have USA beating Russia in the 1980 Olympics? That's the best Olympic moment of all time.

    Phelps, who wins a bunch of arbitrary medals due to silly different versions of swimming, wins? The only stroke that matters is freestyle. He has one individual gold in that.

    Yeah, those games are always blowouts, Japan vs Canada was a huge one too. Their biggest win ever was 28-2 and biggest lost 8-2 against Canada. But in the Olympics alone from 1956-1992 they average 6.6 goals a game, most of the players on that bench in 1980 had been playing since 1968-70ish. They only lost 110 games in that 36 year span. They have never played in a tournament and left without a medal, even with Canada, the Czechs, Sweden, and Finland who were all powerhouses...
