How to Make Your ZD30 Flutter

  • Here's how to get that fully hectic dose on your ZD30. This is a method I found on accident, if you rev your ZD30 Navara or Patrol and turn the engine off when it is still high in RPM the butterfly valve in the intake closes and the boost from the turbo has to exit against the direction of the turbo blades. This causes compressor surge or dose or flutter, whatever you want to call it. Do this at your own peril as this can decrease the life of your turbo.

    My td42 just woooshes through its 4” intake and back out the snorkel, even with a little 500rpm blip on the throttle 😂

      Yeah bigger engine, bigger turbo. Sounds much better than a ZD30 for sure

    Mine "Blows Off" every gear shift or pedal lift-off. Huge FMIC and piping does that for ya. Your "Flutter" is called compressor stall. Excess boost pushing back against the compressor wheel and stalling it. The sound you get is the combination of your smooth, metal tube and being ver free flowing, sets up a tuned flutter. Mine with just a stock Safari snorkel just blows off.
    Your description of the throttle and swirl is close but not correct. So the back one is the EGR/Swirl butterfly to pull exhaust gases back into cyclinders via only 4 intake valves, the same butterfly closed even without the EGR flowing will induce a "Swirl" in the cyclinder charge but it's effects are pretty lame when whole charge is slammed into to the top of the piston at TDC.
    The throttle, the ECU will fully close it on engine-shutdown to try and stop the thing shaking but also as a safety for a run-away, kills air-flow, no more run-away diesel. What also happens on the Navara ONLY is the ECU can also partially close it to create a low pressure in the manifold to allow the EGR to flow in. If full boost pressure was in the plenum, it would flow out the EGR valve. See the three solenoids, the back one you have blocked would normally go to the other side of the throttle butterfly actuator and partially pull it closed. Yours in blocked and a T-piece connects both actuator chambers to the fun-stopper solenoid.
    Flutter is just a low frequency resonance.

      Why can’t you do it with a top mount

    • @ReubsModifications
      @ReubsModifications  Před 2 lety

      @@user-gj3hc5uc7s hey mate not sure where it said you can’t do it with a top mount, I think you might have misread bens comment about a huge FMIC and piping will do that. There’s nothing saying a top mount won’t flutter but there’s significantly less piping on top mounts then there is front mounts as there’s less distance from the turbo to intercooler.
      This means that there is less volume in a top mount intake system compared to a front mount, another point is top mounts are typically a lot smaller than front mounts due to space confinement’s so once again less intake volume.
      If you were running the same boost on either you’d have a better chance to flutter on a FMIC set up 👍🏻

    I need help with my Nissan Hardbody pickup with the ZD30 engine .
    The problem is self acceleration not quite often but when you engage first gear and you start level up its when it goes by itself.
    What would be the solution

    My ZD30 Patrol flutters so much every time I let off the throttle. Installed a 3” straight pipe with a cat and very loud like a big truck lol. I was bit worried and looking around if this is bad for my car. Not sure if I should take it to a mechanic.

    Compressor surge is not good one turbine spinning and comp wheel trying to spin the oposite way thats how shafts snap

    • @ReubsModifications
      @ReubsModifications  Před 2 lety

      The ZD30 doesnt have a blow off valve, they use a wastegate on the turbo to vent exhaust pressure away from the turbine blades.

    Does it have to close all the way to flutter and cut the engine out or can it be open just enough for the engine to stay on but decelerate the engine faster and dose without turning the engine off?

    • @ReubsModifications
      @ReubsModifications  Před rokem

      If you are using the key and cutting the engine it will close all the way but if you turn the key back before the revs drop too far then it wont turn off. If you're doing it manually in the engine bay then you have a bit more control of the valve but need someone to work the throttle.
