    Replacing the timing belt on a 2001 Honda Accord. The belt has snapped so the car would not start. It just cranks over.
    Did this on December 23, 2015. Friend just needed the timing belt replaced to just get it running. I recommended to replace the water pump since it is in the area of the timing belt but she did not have enough money since it was Christmas time.
    How the NO START occurred.
    Friend was driving and came to a complete stop on a traffic light, suddenly the car just died. She tried to start it and it just keeps on turning/cranking over and not starting. Battery was just replaced a month ago, that's what she told me.
    Please watch here how I diagnose this car.

    I recently changed the timing belt on my 2002 Honda Accord and found your video quite helpful. As for removing the crankshaft pulley near the beginning I couldn’t get the damn thing off myself. I went to a local shop and had one of the techs loosen the bolt with an impact wrench, and needed a gear puller to get it off. Overall it was a major knuckle buster job. When your timing belt broke, you’re lucky it didn’t damage the engine. With such luck you should try betting on horses or buying lottery tickets! Thanks for posting this informative and helpful video.

      What is the most important factor, the miles on the belt or the age of the belt? When I bought the honda years ago the mechanis at honda always said the belt is only to be changed after 105,000 mles. Now I see on the internet they say change it after 7 years even if there is only 30k on the belt. What is the truth?

Your video, hands down, would have made that a whole lot easier. Now I get to follow your walk through, seeing as how my crankshaft seal decided to douse my brand new Mitsoboshi belts in hot oil.

    I had a similar experience with our 1998 Honda Odyssey. Engine is F22B. The how to diagnose by watching the cams move or not was very helpful. Thanks Angel. I knew then my belt was broken. Worried other part like valves might be damaged as well. But watching Angel's video gave me some hope that it might just be belt replacement. In my case, the lower belt snapped that also caught the timing belt that eventually snapped as well. I'm not sure if F22B engines are interference or not. But there's a clearance between pistons and valves according to the mechanic who did work on my car. Belts were replaced and running ok now. Thanks Kababayan for the video!

    my belt has missing teeth and stopped running at a stoplight.not knowing this i tried starting it after it sat for a few months and it fired right up, ran smooth but a lil thump sound like a air bubble in a bike tire, here and there and stopped again but it did run very smooth. i took off the valve cover and sure enough seen the missing teeth on the belt. busted my ass trying to get the pulley bolt off with no freaking luck. heated it with a torch but didnt budge. i will get all the tools i saw you using and go at it again when im off work. i appreciate your video and thanks bro. seen many others and yours is definitely top 3 but #1 when it comes to actually seeing the points to line up and the humorous look killed it man. I did this job on a '90 vw passat years ago and its intake valves were all bent & had to be replaced. valve shaft damage was obvious as soon as the cover was off. I was surprised you didn't look at valves for damage before proceeding w the rest of the job. Glad it worked out for you though. Keep up the good work!

    Well done vid, BUT - Duralast belts? Gates FTW, since a busted belt ruins your day (and on an interference motor, more than your day). And it sucks so bad to get to the damn timing belts that I always replace the tensioner and water pump as well. Oh yeah, and I hate Vegas, but they're lucky to have you there. :-)

    Your friend is extremely lucky she was sitting at a traffic light at idle when the timing belt snapped. Otherwise there certainly would have been bent valves and other horrific engine destruction. She's also lucky to have a friend like you that knows how to replace it. Just bought a very clean and very solid 1998 Accord for my daughters first car that just turned 100,000. I was able to get the owner down 300 dollars on the price because she said the timing belt was never changed. She had no idea what a timing belt was. I'm replacing it myself this weekend so that will save me labor cost. I came to this video as a refresher because it has been 20 years since I changed one. It's all coming back to me now! Thanks for the video.

      whichever comes first. i think with this car its something like 105k or 10 years (dont quote me) but should be safe and do it a bit sooner IMO@@mikem6796

      They are, but sometimes you'll get lucky and the belt snap won't destroy your engine. It possibly did some damage tho, cars running pretty rough.

    My sister just picked up a 99 accord for $300 w/ 220k on the odometer. Last weekend I changed out both cv axles (one was busted). I cannot tell the condition of the timing belt but I’ll be doing it next weekend with water pump. Amazing at 220k, it runs perfect.

  • @donaldforsyth2986
    @donaldforsyth2986 Před 5 lety +4

    I've read that when a timing belt breaks on an interference engine like on Hondas the engine is usually destroyed. Apparently that's not the case.

      jonathan w okay for that yea sometimes you struggle with the impact gun and it doesn’t come off sucks but your best choice is to buy a bigger gun air impact but bigger and not only that you need the sockets for that same size of the gun use that it’s so powerful with all that struggle it will loosen it it within 3 to 4 seconds

    This was THEE BEST video for doing this job. I am NOT A MECHANIC but I followed exactly what he does and it cranked right up with no problems. I have watched many other videos and they do a great job of explaining step by step as they go along and some of them get a lil too technical for my ears.This video gets straight to it, no talking and explaining, just straight step by step instructions while he does the job. If you do it exactly the way he done it than it should work. I really appreciate this video Fix it Angel, I'm ready to get back in there without being afraid of doing more damage after watching and doing the job. Not sure how the hell you pulled it off while shooting video at the same time???? Thanks Again Bro..

    • @FixItAngel
      @FixItAngel  Před 8 lety +1

      Thank you porkbeats, I'm happy you understood every step. You just showed everyone you do not have to be a mechanic to do this stuff. I'm proud of you man!! For those who can't watch and follow. I'm lost for words to those people.
      Yes, it was hard to wrench with one hand and video with the other. Believe me I tried to narrate. But it was too hard and I thought, why talk? The viewers can follow and if they don't like my video. Oh well?! That sucks for them.
      I did this job 2 days before Christmas and my friend was in need of help. I brought all my tools and started 8am-12pm. I just got done before my 3 year old got home from school at 12:45pm.
      When you put your mind to it, you can accomplish mostly everything. I'm thankful that you appreciate this video because it was not easy. I do it for people like you in need for guidance on fixing your own cars.
      The good Lord is always watching over me and I try to help others in return.
      Welcome and please like and subscribe if you haven't already.

      As for me, I'm scared at the thought of removing the power steering belt, so this job seems pretty overwhelming to me. I'd end up with a bunch of pieces removed with no idea how to replace them ;)

    Thanks, Really clear video. I marked old belts and pulleys etc. Then put corresponding marks on new belts. But you show all the timing marks on pulleys and motor. So I now know to use your method. as a check or if the belt is already broken (your case). I found it a puzzle to take out lower belt cover. Got there in the end though. This is a do able job but allow a couple of days if you are a novice. Don't get under a car on a jack ALWAYS USE strands and chock wheels.

    Dude, you make this look so easy and most of it with one hand, awesome. very detailed and informative. By the way you didn't say how you determine that it was the timing belt, what indication did the car give to know? I noticed that when you took the cover off, it was obvious that the timing belt broke and got torn all up, while pieces where falling out. Other wise this video is excellent. Thanks a lot. Great job!!! A++
