This is the kind of videos I need explaining differences: two examples, unbiased opinions, 5 minutes and done. Thanks for this!
Thankyou Miguel, I was definitely trying to keep it simple! 😁
If you’re wanting the “old formula” style then I would highly recommend picking up the army painter wash set as their tones are pretty much identical to GW’s old formula. I like the new shade properties personally they are great for subtle shading rather than completely changing the color I can choose the shade I want by how many coats I apply. Sure it may take longer, but in the end you’ll have a better over all miniature for it.
Yeah, I really need to try the AP ones because I like alot of their other products 😁
...honestly, to me as someone mostly painting, the difference is pretty noticable. The old one covers and darkens the entire far better than the new version. Plus, it's a lot more matt in appearance than the new version, which appears to be quite shiny.
I did prefer the old one, but after using the new Nuln Oil for some time now, it hasn't negatively impacted my painting at all. I've adapted to it not darkening the entire area as much, and actually a positive of this is not needing to clean up the areas as much with my subsequent layers.
The increased gloss is something I notice, but that has always happened with different washes anyhow. The only way I've found to get all the finishes on the model the same is to hit it with matte varnish at the end anyway. Interestingly enough, I did go back and look at old models I painted and some of them do have that shine in the cracks from the old Nuln Oil too, the new version just has a touch more of it imo. But as I said in the video, I do wish they hadn't changed it as it worked fine before anyway. 😁
@@TheHobbyGrotto I usually use it for painting bases but now it just looks horribly plastic and wet when I'm going for a dried out look.
Typically I don't slather the entire model in Nuln Oil. That's essentially like the dipping technique. For chrome metallics it's gold, though. Over boltguns, vehicle weapons, pipes, etc, it is fabulous. I'd say both the old and the new are great. Slight edge to the new for having a slightly lesser surface tension.
Totally, I still need to do more testing on metallics but I'm happy with the new stuff! 😁
Nice to see that the difference isn't that drastic. I was originally on the hate-bandwagon, and the smaller pots do sting a lot in the financial aspect, but at least the end result isn't too far from what I would normally want. And for larger jobs I would probably use my homemade dip wash anyway. Cheers!
I can understand the hate with the smaller bottles, I guess they wanted to standardise everything size wise with the contrast paint range. Also, perhaps the smaller pots will be harder to knock over 🤣
watch Juan Hidalgo's video about how to use contrast paint. It helps a lot in understanding how the new shades function and how to avoid the pooling on raised areas. Most of the people I've seen saying the new formula is bad just just been slapping it on exactly like the old wash when the new stuff uses a totally different medium and behaves differently. Like you said, it needs to be used in the way you would use contrast paint and not slapdash like the old washes.
Juan Hidalgo is definitely a master, not sure I've seen that video, I'll check it out 😊
To me this completely eliminate the entire point of the nuln oil. If I wanted something I had to dilute beforehand I would go and buy contrast. GW royaly f'ed this one up
It will depend on your painting style, I didn't dilute the new formula and found it fine 😁
Then shouldn't it be called contrast paint and not a shade?
I think it's fine still calling it a shade, I used it as a shade in the video and it still fulfilled all those requirements and created shading that was indistinguishable (except for a bit more shine) than the old school stuff.
After looking at the Fist's rhino I'd say New Nuln is a winner. Maintains more of the yellow vibrancy of the base coat. Still, very minor differences so I'll be happy buying the new one when the old one runs out.
It's definitely relieving that it's not too different! 😊
Hey mate! Great video, I was really hoping someone would make this exact video and here you are! I quite like the idea of the new nuln oil in the sense that it wont "tint" the miniature as much as the old one would, I did find myself having to clean up quite a bit after using it. Be be fair, its such a small difference anyway. I just wish it wasnt so glossy!
Thanks mate, glad to hear it helped! The glossiness is probably my least favourite thing about the new formula, but even that is pretty minor 😅
I just spilt a full bottle of old oil last night and I'm big sad about it
Did you watch my video on how to stop Nuln Oil spills?? 😬 All vintage Nuln Oil must be preserved and cherished! 😍
@@TheHobbyGrotto just did and well Damm 🤬🤬 I sux
Oof! Definitely have my sympathies! It was bad enough knocking it over normally, but now?... It's a downright tragedy.
to me, the old formula seemed to darken the colors very slightly, whereas the new formula seemed to leave them almost as vibrent as they were befor the aplication.
Yes, this is definitely a thing. Hard to say which I prefer at this stage, the darkening filter effect on colours from the old Nuln Oil became a part of my painting to a degree to add more shading, but having less cleanup and more vibrant colours is good too! 😆
Great little comparison video my friend. Very useful indeed. I do enjoy a bit of nuln oil and find that the games workshop washes are already a fan favourite that people really do love. I’m not sure that they really needed to change the formula as it was already a winner for so many people and changing it seemed to be more about marketing than actually it’s usefulness. I’m not a huge fan of the smaller pot idea as in this day and age I think people want to feel like they are getting something more for their money not less. That being said though I have tried a load of different black washes and they do act and work quit similar and I personally find the Vallejo big pot black wash to be amazing value for its money. The Vallejo is very dark and can be watered down to get twice as much shade for your buck. A whopping 200ml pot goes for about £8 here in the uk and that’s unreal value if you use a lot of wash.
Very interesting info Dan, the smaller pot is definitely a sore point for some, but as a positive, the smaller pot is harder to knock over 🤣 I think they probably just wanted to streamline all their pots into paint size and contrast size. I have been meaning to try some of the alternatives, but for me the new Nuln Oil achieves everything I want from it even though it's slightly more glossy, so I'll probably stick with it! 😁
But yes, they didn't need to change the formula! 🤣
Definitely think Nuln Oil would have benefited from a rebranding now that it doesn't act like a wash. If it's acting more like a contrast or other paint, calling it a wash kind of undermines the category a bit.
Also, this is small, but the glossier finish saddens me. I don't have the space to spray, so my models are unvarnished - meaning that, for me, the glossy look will be a bit problematic.
That said, the difference *is* a lot smaller than I've seen in other videos. Probably because you highlighted over the wash. I appreciate you doing that, as that's how I do it; so it gives me a much better feel for how the new wash would look in my painting style. I also like that you tested it on a brighter colour too, as the lesser clean-up of the line really shone through. I can actually see a use for it!
Will I use the new nuln oil?... Probably not. I'm incredibly "vote with my wallet" - hence my switch from buying Warhammer over to Frostgrave and other minis. Still! If a new bottle somehow winds up in my possession, it's great knowing how to best use it!
I hear you with the gloss issue. It's not very big, but definitely noticeable without varnish. I generally use Testors Dullcote for my day to day minis, so that will eliminate it, but I don't really varnish display minis so it might be a bit annoying there. I might have to to adjust my lighting setup 🤣 I did notice when editing that some of it was a bit shiny.
In regards to the consistency it was quite subtle, but the old wash was definitely thinner. I have to test it more though, as you saw in the video it doesn't dry thicker but it did feel contrasty.
@@TheHobbyGrotto Feels contrasty, eh? I'll definitely be curious to hear your thoughts as you experiment with it more.
It was a bit weird but I'm sure it will be all good! 😊
Seems as if the pigment is way less in the new version...
I suppose the best thing about the new nuln oil too is that it's not an "oil" paint; so if you want a nice realistic-looking "oil", use an oil paint like Abteilung 502's 'Smoke'. Best thing since sliced bread! 😛
Very true! There are always other options, and plenty of great ones depending on your style! 😁
I like the new stuff better, if I wanted to tint an area id just start off with that color. Now I don't have to worry about it as much, nor waste time bringing mid tones forth.
I agree, even though I'm a big fan of the colour tint of the original, I think the new formulation actually works better for its intended purpose, and adds the shading while keeping a bit more brightness to your colours! 😁
I thankfully bought a second pot of the old nuln oil before the new stuff came out, did that with a lot of the shades. The new ones seem ok but I liked how the older ones looked by comparison so I got the ones that I thought changed the most
When I was at my local game store recently they were replacing all the old pots with the new. Probably though buying on Amazon and other online stores you might be able to get the old stock. If the difference was bigger I'd probably try and hunt some down but I think it will be ok. In any case, I've got about a bottle or so left of the old stuff so I'm living in the now! 🤣
@@TheHobbyGrotto That's a good way to go about it. When I was seeing the first comparisons they diffrences looked bigger than they probably are so I just decided to be prepared just in case
Never hurts to be prepared! Especially with something as important as Nuln Oil!
So I’m new to the hobby. I got Nuln oil - and what I wasn’t expecting. Is that when it dries, it still looks wet and slightly glossy? I’m not sure I like it. Is that normal?
By it's very nature Nuln Oil has a slight gloss finish, which is why it's important to add layers over it and just leave the Nuln Oil in the shaded areas. All paints have different gloss levels though, so the best way to eliminate all that is to use a matte varnish at the end. This will bring all the different paint finishes to the same standard and remove any shine 😊
@@TheHobbyGrotto
Ok …
Can you recommend a matte varnish?
My favourite varnish is Testors Dullcote, it has a super matte finish. This can however dull true metallic metal, so if you have a lot of that on the model it may be better to go for a satin varnish.
A cool comparison vid . Sure this glossy aspect can be a matter for many hobbyists . Cheers !
Definitely, with paints having varying layers of gloss I always like to use a varnish at the end to create a consistent finish 😊
Where did you find such a big brush to paint those land raiders?
A tribute to the famous GW tank brush! 😆
Honestly I just water down abaddon black and shade everything with it.
I love this! 🔥
Nice! Whats usually the ratio that works best for you? Also Contrast medium,r Lahaina medium or just water?
@@ramonosuke just water, and it works wonders. Honestly its pretty easy to eyeball how much water you need, and it really depends on how dark you want the shading to be. If I want very dark and deep shading Ill mix in propably a bit over twice the water I would when thinning down and paint the details I want to shade with a sharper brush. If you want to just generally shade everything at once youll need a bit more water. Like I said I just eyeball it, I cant really give you a clear ratio, youll just have to experiment. If its too thin you can easily wipe it off but if its too dark youll end up doing a lot of fixing on your model. I dont recommend shading white with it.
i liked how the yellow turned out.
Thanks mate, yellow is the true test! 😃
Seems to me you need to use more of the nuln oil. I also prefer a darker, grim tone to my minis, so the older one wins out for me.
Yeah, I think if you're trying to create that grimdark filter over the whole model the old formula was better for that, but definitely try it out, you might be pleasantly surprised like I was 😁
Been painting warhammer for nearly 30 years and never owned a pot of nuln oil until 6 months ago. Now I use it for EVERYTHING!
It's truly wonderful stuff! 😊
Still tastes largely the same, though I am disappointed at the smaller container
This is the important thing 😆
Im more insulted by the fact the pot is smaller for the same price. I think Ill just buy other brands when mine runs out
Yeah, the pot change is a bit on the nose, plus the old pot is just classic!
Wait. You mean it actually does what it's supposed to? Awesome!! Oh, try using actual color washes.
It's certainly good to know it works, some people thought otherwise haha! But I agree, colour washes are awesome!
Honestly I hate the new one
I'm giving it a go, time will tell 🤣
New version is rubbish
I think the new version still works but I do wish they hadn't changed it. I miss that tall bottle!
