    That was an excellent explanation of how it all comes together in a complete cycle. I’ve been a HVAC tech for over 30 years and never really understood how it really works , until today. Same principle as a high low refrigerant refrigerator but using a different heat source instead of high compression from a compressor. Thanks buddy .

    This is the best detailed explanation I had come acrossed and most satisfying. All the whys in the chemicals used are answered in this one video. I felt it was important that you did not leave put the double pipes and why there is a rectifier. So clever how they work out the ifeal length of the boiler pipe and diametre and also finding that solution to seperate the water and Amonia vapour. Amazing there is no valves / regulator of some sort. You think they last for ever when maintained leveled.
    Thank you for your effort in stripping it back to show how much surface area for freezer versus fridge. Diagrams with symbols can not replace practical and visual clues / close ups. Can see how much volume in pipes needed versus the size of that liquid container. Love the idea that it is like reusing the heat from the water like a steam engine with multi chamber. I had a one satisfied fixed in knowledge, finally no need to look any other further you tube videos. Beats all the other fancy presented videos I have clicked on with graphics and exceptional voice overs but lacks the full operational essence. I am no engineerer. Well done on your part and your patience / passion, I value your stripped down displays. I can tell others curious people of this video.

    Whoever figured out how to make an ammonia system work, had to have been a genius. I never knew how an ammonia system worked up until now. I've been an HVACR tech since 1986 but never dabbled in these RV refrigerators. I just bought a 2006 Carson toy hauler (3rd rv) and the fridge doesn't work as good as it should. Now that I understand better how they work I can start working on diagnosing the issue. I have a feeling the upper condenser may be pretty dirty not allowing the proper amount of cooling to happen thus causing a not so cold freezer/fridge. It doesn't work on electric so I have that to diagnose as well and your other videos have explained how that side works. Thanks for the explanation!

      @@thehomewizard1 I was kicked out of RV repair school for questioning the instructor's experience as a teacher, and the owner of the school's broken promises. For 3 weeks, all we did was read out of 20 year old PDF manuals, which I also questioned. The school was a total scam, but I did get most of my money back.

      @@clwbob Wow, that's one of my considerations. After 39 yrs on houses, & 6 yrs in RV fixing what breaks & doing some improvements, sounds like if I want to be "bonafide" it's "only" $10k to get a cert.

    Great video! My children used to love knowing random dates and the events around them. Makes me happy to know knowledge isn't lost on the next generation. Now for my question:. Have you ever seen the mastic paste actually melt and leak out of a fridge? We just purchased an RV and, the fridge is cold, but something that looks exactly like mastic has run out of freezer/fridge and settled under kitchen cabinets. Just wondered if you've ever seen it and how to repair it? Thanks for all the beautifully explained videos.

    I have been curious about this cycle for decades and never did the deep dive. Thank you for your service to the education of the rest of us. Great job! It makes me wonder if the people using 12 volt fans to help condensing may be over doing air movement and creating the need for more heat to keep the cycle going? I would really appreciate thoughts about this. Thanks again from Shel in Minnesota.

    Very informative video! While you were talking about diagnosing a nonfunctional machine you gave three indications, a yellowish dust( I presume this indicates a breach in the sealed system) a smell of ammonia( also a breach) and a gurgling sound. What would the gurgling sound be a result of? Also you mentioned the sodium chromate crystallizing, how would that occur, what would be the indicator, and is there a way to reverse this?

But ive watched all your fridge videos and didnt see the information I was searching for. I had to remove my fridge to replace a icemaker water line, and have noticed that my absorption vessel, rectifier & absorption tubes are starting to show some rust. I`ve used some steel wool to clean the loose rust off. And am wondering if i can paint these components? And if "yes" what type paint would you recommend? Thanks in advance 😊

    Super video,, thanks for taking the time to produce these videos. Is it possible to have too much air flow within these cooling pipes, tubes and fins. My Norcold cooling fan is set to come on at 135 degrees and off at 115 degrees. What would happen if I change that to on at 105 degrees and off at 85 degrees?

    Thank you very much I have a camper and always wondered how it used heat to cool my fridge. Im a certified AC refrigeration tech using conventional freon, Compressor, condenser and evaporator and some type of metering device being a cap tube, oraphice, expansion valves etc. But this stuff amazes me more and really seems a bit more complicated. So when the Ammonia goes from the small tube to the big tube it drops in pressure and immediately vaporizes does it drop to the minus 28 degrees right there and does it start to warm up eventually getting to the 11 degrees? I'm trying to grasp all this to explain to my grandson.

    Darren I just upgraded my trailer to a 4 year old 27 foot Rockwood with slide outs, I'm testing everything out before taking it on a camping trip. I has a Dometic 7 cubic ft. reefer I'm in Calif. and it has been 100 deg. plus lately and started testing on AC it cools down at night to low 40s but during the day the box will get up to mid 50s. on the coldest setting. Next test on Propane freezer got down to -10 deg. and the box down to 28 deg. I switched to mid temp setting and now the box is running just above 32 deg. and freezer is -4 deg. I guess my question is should the unit work as good on AC as Propane? I have watched your videos on testing the AC heating element but need to get time to get the specs. for my unit before testing. I love your Videos very good instructions and a little humor keep it up.

    You mentioned the PSI was at a couple different levels in this system. Are there ports to check the pressure levels of the gas for trouble shooting?
    In the event there is a leak can companies patch the leak (maybe solder) and recharge the system with a hydrogen/ammonia/water/sodium chromate elixir?
    I often hear complaints over the ineffectiveness of this cooling method. Do any manufacturers make a dual boiler/evaporative system to double the cooling effect?
    One day your son will look back on this video and be very proud of his dad. History, theoretical chemistry, applied chemistry, and hands on how things work experience - WOW!!!

      It is a sealed system, no port to take a reading from. Troubleshooting isn’t very difficult with these systems. Problems could be, crystallization of the sodium chromate causing a restriction, rusted out and leaking boiler/cooling unit, inadequate heating of the solution and the big one… poor cooling of the condenser. If all is right in that world, physics will do its thing and it will work. But let’s not forget about all the electronics that control this thing.

    Most excellent thanks. When they fail, I hear its crystallization, ever cut one up and show that. I did the upsidedown thing on Demetic and worked for about a year. Then it sat in AZ. Now it won't work after the sideways upside-down burping technique. .

    Awesome! You've often mentioned the importance of airflow through the outdoor stack, and how properly placed fans can aid that airflow. Where is the best place to install those fans? My trailer has a Norcold refrigerator in a slideout, so all of the venting happens in a side wall with no roof vent.

      Install the fans about halfway up. Make sure there is 1” or less clearance between the top fins and the outside wall (use baffles if necessary) to direct the airflow over the fins. Make sure there is insulation on both sides and top of fridge. Install a “turning vane” above the fins to direct air out of the top vent.
      Doing all of the above lowered my fridge temps from 50° to 33°

      Michael Johnston I have a class a motor home with a norcold fridge. Mines is not on a slide wall. My vents on the side of the coach and in the roof. They say put a fan on the roof vent and on the fridge vent cover as well. What say you?

    Thank you for that excellent lesson! I see how the boiler can be heated with an electric element or by burning propane. I was wondering if a solar water heater might supply enough heat for the boiler to do the cooling? I'm guessing not, but would like to see your response.

      I just got here from exploring the world of solar thermal power and such. But I'd like to try to (not) answer your question/build onto it.
      Check out solar collectors and Evacuated Tube Collectors (ETC). This kind of collector uses vacuum as an insulator and allows solar thermal energy to pass through the outer glass layer and onto the absorbing part, then collected onto a tube, typically made of copper and filled with water.
      However, you can switch out the thermal conductor-liquid (water) with higher boiling point liquids to accumulate even more energy before you pass it onto the absorption cooler. I'm pretty sure you'd need an active pump to circulate the water through the STPs and into the absorption cooler (and back) though.
      But compared to the electrical power demands and upfront cost of a pressure-pump AC, it's still amazing.
      If you're feeling extremely exploratory, I guess you could just try doing that with water vapour, but I definitely wouldn't feel safe around that kind of pressure, so I wouldn't recommend using water.

    Darin, I enjoyed your video! U can see you get really excited as you go through the steps as the ammonia vaporized out of the water the water falls back down then the ammonia vapor is condensed to a liquid, mixes with hydrogen gas. As the hydrogen gas / ammonia liquid pass through the low temperature evaporator you failed to explain how the heat from the freezer and ice box is transferred by conduction, this causing the ammonia to vaporize transferring the heat in refrigerator to the ammonia vapor, I am not clear how the ammonia returns

      I believe "the ammonia readily absorbs into the water", water is H2O, so I suppose the extra hydrogen then "off-gasses as the water is going down the hydrogen gas goes back up the tube.
      How's that, Clear as mud? Lol

    Great video. With all that explained, what would cause the freezer (low temp evaporator) to be normal cold (-5°F), while the fridge portion (high temp evaporator) warm at 55°F? A blockage?

    Kinda reminds me of what i do for a living, i work on DEF, after treatment systems on all new diesel engines (DEF is a mixture about the same)... So after seeing this and it is as i thought it was, if i add a cooling fan too the TOP coils it will help the process on really hot days? I did this and also added a thermal on off switch to one end of the pipes(top coils). but i dont have the correct temp switch, it will not cut on (dont get hot enough) 104 degrees cut on switch. guess i need a lesser value switch... any thought on this? or is it really needed? my unit cools just fine i just wanted to add this with a thermal switch to cut on if ever needed automatically. thanks just subscribed, your good at teaching !👍

    I've read an article that said the evaporator on the newer refrigerators will rust after 10-15 years.
    compared to the 1930's servel refrigerators. i'm surprised they're not using a corrosion resistant stainless steel for the evaporator.
