I think your right on replacing the AC unit mine was 15 years old which age is a factor you should consider. It was developing a fan banging issue not all the time so the compressor was fine. After consulting with my RV guy I decided I wanted warranty and reliability for a few bucks more than doing an overhaul. I got a larger BTU, and lower profile unit installed for $800 it was a new Coleman.
I am glad you talked about the ACs with a Freon leak. Some people get so upset when you tell them that a unit that might only be a couple of years out of warranty has to be replaced with a new one. Thanks for the video Darrin
Darren, I will back you one step further on the whole recharging an AC unit topic! The compressor motor is refrigerant cooled. If the system was slowly leaking, it is highly likely that the hermetic compressor was running really hot before anyone noticed the unit was not cooling adequately. If you went through the whole process of pressure testing, leak finding, repair of the leak (if it is even possible), evacuation of the system, and recharging, you might just find that the compressor fails shortly afterwards! Now the customer is pissed and wants it fixed again for warranty to you! Also, by the time you spend all that time and material on this leak repair, it would likely of been cheaper to replace the thing! I was an HVAC/R technician for 39 years on commercial / Industrial equipment and know how to do all this stuff and have the equipment. I would not even think about doing it unless the owner of the unit was a real close relative or friend.....and even then!!!......who would want to go that route? By the time the sealed system in the AC unit fails, it is likely several years old. You might as well get a new one with higher efficiencies, new fan motor, and all new controls. BTW, I have learned a lot about these RV's from your videos! They are different animals compared to the stuff I worked on all those years.
I had an appliance repair company charge mine and it worked for years great. All refrigerant leaks slowly. I suggest that if everything else works great and it's low on refrigerant, call someone and have them look at it.
Refrigerant is in a sealed system and should not leak. If there is a leak then the leak should be repaired
Refrigerant does not leak unless there is a leak. And if its a hermetically sealed system with no service ports. Working on it with out breaking the law is very expensive because of extra steps required. You have to tap into the system with out letting refrigerant escape. Recover all the refrigerant. Then braze in servace ports so you evaluate and recharge the system after the leak has been found and fixed. It is illegal to vent almost all refrigerants to the atmosphere or charge a system you know has a leak. Its also illegal to do any of that with out a type 1 and 2 EPA certification.
Yes, you made a videoshowing diagnosis of the lower control board but not the eyebrow board.
Look I know there is a lot of information on this out there. (Lithium-Ion Battery conversions, solar and inverters.) But I like how you go through the process and explain everything.
So, I hope you start doing a little of this.

Darren, nice job on the videos and I like your critical thinking on your diagnoses. May I make a suggestion? Maybe you should go to a 5 question format instead of set period of time. You seem overly aware of how much time has elapsed and a set question format would allow you to answer the questions in detail without worrying about the length of them. Thanks and keep it up!

Air Conditioner, at 10:30 you finally provided the answer. For me, you spent too much time on this. Once you get a leak, there's a reason, it needs to be replaced. To repair and then drive around hoping it will not leak again is fruitless. Replace it with new, and gain all the benifits.
Back in the day you would find the leak with a sniffer, fix the leak, tap into a system if it was a closed system, recharge and be done with it. But as Darrin said, regulations have made things more complicated and not worth the potential hassle for most small businesses.
Rather than 10 min, please take 2 min and answer my remote service request that I have placed twice on your web site. Happy to pay for your advice.
It's Spring? In the middle of October? I'm very lucky...our 1990 Carrier in the living room of our 1990 motor home is so cold I have to run it on slow most days. It's amazing to me.
LOL... Yes, we recorded a lot of these back to back during the COVID lockdown and only now getting time to edit and upload them (been a very busy summer!). I think we recorded 13 or so back then. With the A/C question. Dupont lost the patents on several classes of freon. That is why the cost. I am a certified A/C tech. It is all about the money 💰.
Your clearley not a tech. Its not about the patent. The refrigerant is no longer made because of environmental reasons. The reason its so expensive is because the only refrigerant available is what already exists. All the refrigerant lost to leaks and hacks job handy mans (like you clearly are cus if you dont know this how did you pass your EPA test) not recovering it to be reprossed or it was recovered but mixed with other refrigerants (also a violation) and had to be incenterated.

Darren your videos are great, very clear even I understand them. Please help. I have 2 solar panels with VOC output of 24.2 which will connect to a CTEK 250s Dual DC-DC Battery charger with max 23 VOC input. I need to reduce VOC output by 1.2 so I don't damage CTEK. Is there an easy way to do this. Thank you kindly

Repair the leak and recharge
TWO QUESTIONS !!! I have a 1999 Dolphin National motorhome. I have removed the roof air and am replacing with a split unit. In doing so, I have eliminated the control box that was in the A/C unit that controled the thermostat which also controled the water heater and the furnace. I am installing a switch with the warning light for the water heater. Here's the question finally. Do I need to install a fuse between the switch and if so what size? Also on the heater thermostats, I went to your store on Amazon to puchase them. However, it does not tell you what size the thermostats are. I know that you said the right one is a 60c and left one a 82c. How would I know? Also, I wanted to tell you I really have learned alot from your videos. Thank You very very much.

help me pplease.. i baught a new dinasour board ..a 50pin fan pluss .and it soposed to aliminate the time relay switch because they said there isnt a replacement.. and im not sure how to wire the new board to the old furnice
