    As you go through the demolishings, it becomes so clear how neglected this house was. Even though it's a gem of its era, it will be difficult to save a lot of things just because it's all old, water damaged and mouldy. STILL, keeping the original shell and making new homages to its former glory days will be the best thing ever!

    • @PandamoniuGaming
      @PandamoniuGaming Před 3 měsíci +44

      Honestly for how long it was neglected, it's in surprisingly good condition for being a 90% wood constructee house, they've got a lot more that's usable than I honestly would have thought, what it looks like to me is that the water leaks were happening in a select few parts of the house which is obviously where the floors are ruined and the walls are absolutely disgusting, but the places that seem to be pretty dry should be good, like for example when they did the stairs you could hear that the wood for the stairs hasn't been compromised in any way as it still has that nice hardwood "thunk" sound when you hit it with something which shows that it hasn't absorbed much moisture if any and also doesn't have any rot in those pieces of wood

    This series is so healing for me to watch, I was in a relationship for a long time with someone who would get so frustrated at me if I did anything slow or not right, or messily when we would work on things together, especially house things. Watching you two work together, being silly, being unphased, being unreactive, not getting frustrated but laughing and relishing in the chaos of it all... It's just such a reminder for me that this is what I wanted in my life, and it can exist. I don't want to take things so seriously, I don't want so much frustration at little mistakes or messes. Ugh please continue posting this series I will be watching every episode. you are now one of my favourite youtubers!

    Here’s a pro tip I learned from my contractor.
    When you are sweeping up after a demolition; tape down a big piece of scrap of cardboard using painter’s tape.
    Sweep everything onto the cardboard.
    Pull it up, bend it a little and pour your trash into your bags for the dump.
    Way better than the little dust pan I was struggling with
    I hope this saves your back a little bit of distress.
    I love what you are doing!

      Please keep the orange vertical tiles!! Not only are they "period" correct, but the shape, color, and texture are extremely hard to find, let alone the thick double glazing. You can clean off grout easily and spray with white vinegar to sterilize them & let dry in sunlight and they are ready to use. You can even use them as backslash. I hope you retain a MCM looking kitchen that has so much character vs. the sterile ugly crap kitchens so popular now with outdated granite, marble countertops and really basic boring tired design with ugly shacker cabinets. A tight flat face cabinet with bottom edge bevel cut allows them to open. A medium Chestnut color stain to a mahogany stain or even satin natural sheen were very popular. They do not ever look dated either, like the ugly shaker panel doors for cabinets. Satin sheen, wax, or lemon oil, French oil were all common finishes too. Tight grained bamboo with vertical grains could also be used if any tight grain woods or veneers are too pricey. 😊👍

      You can do free stuff on marketplace, people just pick stuff up very quickly.
      Saves on waste, recycle, reuse.
      Flat roofs were de rigueur for mid century modern, but as you see from all the water damage, they demand more extensive maintenance. Putting the smallest slope, the water will flow off naturally. If you lived in the desert, it would be more manageable but it looks like you You are in a rainy area, flat roofs will demand more resources.
      Good luck. I enjoy watching your progress.

    Someone might have mentioned it already, but it could be that the open hole to the lower level at the bottom of that cabinet could have been intended for (or previously used for) a dumbwaiter.
    Also... if y'all smelled burning wires, it's most likely because the wires connected to something you tore out of the kitchen got twisted up and created a short. Look in every hole where something electrical was connected and make sure none of the bare conductors are touching each other. Don't forget the wiring for the vent hood over the stove that came crashing down.

    Hey, Jenna! I know you guys think you need to strip the inside of the house before doing the roof, but that is backwards. Fix your leaking roof so nothing inside gets any worse from water dammage before you get to it.

    • @cloudyview
      @cloudyview Před 3 měsíci +16

      I think they're more concerned with the structure supporting the roof, before they go working on the roof. With all of the water ingress, there's probably some actual structure that's no longer safe, especially if they're going to be adding more weight with workers and materials onto the roof

    • @halifaxhiker
      @halifaxhiker Před 3 měsíci +10

      They want to expose the entire structure from below so they can see everything first. Then during the roof work they can replace any rotten structure. Once it’s roof tight they may even strip the walls to the studs? Dunno. Makes any new mechanical / electrical / plumbing easier. Then insulation and drywall. Yes water is still getting in in the meantime but removing the ceiling drywall won’t make that worse. And the house presumably been leaking like a sieve for YEARS so another few months won’t have much impact.
