Make sure you guys verify that brick isn't a chimney for a furnace, water heater, or dryer. Plus don't tear it down until you have the means to prevent more damage to the structure from a collapse.
What kind of camera do you use?
2:35 Have you heard of something called load-bearing walls? Do you want a building to fall on your head? Hire specialists
ANY of the furniture and cabinets etc that have not been thrown out, go back thru them and look in all nooks and crannies, under and in, and look for secret compartments. Many people used to hide cash and valuables back in those days. Another place is above doorframes and windows but those I would think you’d run across while ripping out.
Also, even more importantly, see next part….. it’s the Momma Bear protector naturally coming out in me. lol
I posted in comments, on this same video, about a serious life threatening issue my BF is experiencing after a flip like this. Not as a fear mongering distraction but as a PLEASE be cautious and keep going!
“I’m fixing a house that everyone told me I couldn’t fix” love that energy. Hell yeah Jenna keep proving them wrong!
That was me. I told her that. :P
omg i said the same thing lol
You can fix most of things if you have the motivation, and ofcourse some savings!
Easier to say that to do it. Reality is reality. That project is too big for those two and is going to be very expensive.
I wish it truly was her but she has everyone else doing what she is taking credit for
the "no abestos" is a huge win in a house this old, it'll make everything else easier and less hazardous, very nice.
I felt like I won the lottery when we found out there was no asbestos in the drywall/insulation. I was 99% confident we'd have it in the walls. 🎉
@@JennaPhipps I bought a house recently built in 1952, felt the same way. Your vids really keep me grounded when I wanna complain about projects I'm doing, I have a working roof and toilets 🤣🤣
@@dbman992 OMG, toilets are bad but I am worried the roof will the end of me 😂
@@JennaPhipps the house we reno'ed was built in '67/68, and didn't have it in the drywall itself but had it in the drywall mud. One of the big reasons we decided to get it removed professionally.
@@JennaPhippsAfter demo the roof comes next!
(Retired interior designer).....Before you call the roofer call the architect or an engineer who works with drainage and water. Flat roofs are notorious for not draining properly. My guess is you should not replace the roof before getting a proper consult on drainage concerns. Make sure to document -(as you are) all the areas that had standing water & rot. The new roof may look similar but it will likely be designed differently this go round. The previous owners didn't fix it and this is probably why....They may have been aware that they would have to do the work you are doing now, and also to rework the original roofline. IMO it probably leaked from day one. At the time FLAT was a "new" design concept we have more info about this today.
Agreed - roof first
I hope she either knows, or sees your comment, or more problems later are coming.
Yes!!! This all day !!!! FIX THE ROOF!
Absolutely this! Hopefully they'll design a new roofline that has enough slope to drain properly, while still looking "flat" from the important vantage points to maintain the mid-century modern aesthetic.
Yep, I'd just plain change the roofline if it didn't cost the price of a space rocket.
*starts talking to the camera* dad: ".... .... ??? what's the matter??" such a dad moment.
The camera is always on the tripod somewhere and lots of the time it's not even on so it's hard to tell if I am filming or not 😂

You are so blessed to have your parents by your side helping, and a young man who obviously is in it for the long haul. Your house is going to be amazing.
I found her in my Feeds when she started this project, and when i started my CZcams, sience then i wait every W for her to post ,and it always make me wonder how could it would be to be like that someday, i doubt about my family because they are just different and .. stuff.. but i hope in one day i will have someone stay by me , buy or build a house together, then to live in it, would be such a treasure.
Came for the crochet stayed for the house remodel, Looks so different to when you started jenna! Well done to you and your team
Came for the thrifting, stayed for the crocheting, and am absolutely loving the rebeautification of this house!
Came for the crochet, stayed for the thrifting and here for the house remodel and decoration. Looking forward to finally getting back to the crochet again with some thrifted home decor for good measure. Glad we're all on the same pages. Haha! @Sistafeed

That old-school plasterboard is way heavier and sturdier than modern drywall. That’s why it’s heavier than you expected.
Might be even heavier if it's soaked up a lot of water.
Even modern drywall isn’t light 🥴 and yes, moisture over the years probably made this old drywall way heavier too! This work is not for the faint of heart! But it will absolutely be worth it in the long run! 🤩💯
That's what I thought would be too. We built 1945 and it's all plaster.
I, for one, Am glad you're trying to save this lovely old house. it's sad it got this bad, but I know you can give it a new lease of life , well done
Given it's been abandoned for years in a wet wintery climate it's in amazing condition.
The mold is pretty gnarly. Especially in the first video, the wall of mold, covered by plastic.
"I took a break from filming yesterday" she says...*inserts b-roll film from yesterday* JENNA you're a gem, and I appreciate you.
For the ant eviction fund... Your house is really neat. It's so great that you are making it truly yours and are taking us along for the ride. Many thanks!
FYI I think the brick wall is the flue for the furnace and probably the water heater best check before you demolish.
modern furnace/heater won't use it so might as well demolish to free up the space and give more options for layout (plus one less hole through the new roof)
Maybe load bearing ..??
It's not on the plans for the house so
Might be treasure in there
@@AnniCarlssonit could have been added as a result of an inspection or a realization that the structure needed additional support. That type of thing happens a lot because architects are not engineers.
As someone who is renovating my grandparents old farmhouse, I feel your pain and excitement. Here’s to both of us making our house dreams come true! 🥂 🎉
Darn, I wish I had seen this prior to posting about our flip of an old farmhouse and the major life threatening situation we are facing now. It is in the comments on this video…. Somewhere. PLEASE go find it so you can avoid any potential similar consequences. Worst, it didn’t show its ugly head until TWO YEARS after we were finished. 😮😮
If the wood hasn't gotten soaked. I'd save every piece I could. Years ago I helped a friend demo his "home that couldn't be fixed." It was from the 1960s. He was getting rid of all the wood paneling because he said it made the house dark. I took it, planed it to get rid of the varnish and redid my home office with it. About six months later he sees it and says "Oh, this is fabulous. So warm and welcoming. Wait. This is from my house. I thought it'd be darker." What you have is thinner, but not nearly as dark as his was.
The brick wall, might be the exhaust chimney for the furnace. Or a tomb.
Ripping everything out to start fresh is really awesome. New wiring and new plumbing and built back better. You will have a multimillionaire dollar house in a fantastic location that will last another 70 years. You guys rock.
It was a multi-million dollar listing when she bought it. 😖

That table where the red sofa is is a Noguchi table, and it's worth a small fortune, as in over $2000!
Yeah, I saw that. They got the money lmao. Can’t bear the 45 minute commute to get to your renovation project? Buy a new home just around the corner.
You can get look-alikes for a fraction of the price.
@@carolinebrown9693 if you can afford to buy a house for 1.5 million + have the money (and time) for the insane amounts of renovations needed and then on top of that, getting a new place just to cut down on the commute - you wouldn’t have any problem paying for a Noguchi 😬 I enjoy the series though!
They are renting 5 minutes from the house Reno. Don't judge people for making their way in life
Some construction sites make "slides" from every floor that leads to the bin, maybe you can figure out something to avoid going up and down the stairs every time you have to dispose of something
I always been fobic about slides lol, i don't know why, i'd rather throw it out of window, and pick it when i'm down
I had said earlier to put a tarp down then tear down then drag it out.
If you want to keep (or sell) the old boys scout attire, stick it in the freezer for a few days to make sure any moths or moth eggs are killed. It’s all wool (and insanely pretty) so there a chance for moths
This beautiful house deserves a second life. I love watching the progress updates!
I love the place and the home, i really wish she would tell us how much it costed, or i missed it or something but i watch sience being and didn't saw her mention how much she paid for it. Maybe for Privacy reasons, which are understable, but this house looks so expensive even when was abandoned, because of the placement, and what it has looks and feels expensive.
@@SuitedSkaterLion It was probably for much less than the value because of the condition of the home and because it was not fully cleared prior to the sale
Re that Cub stuff: consider looking at donations to local heritage museums OR considering private buyers. For a long time, many Scouts/Guides groups kept all of their old materials, but there's been a recent push towards "take a digital photo, share it online, and throw out the original" with memorabilia like this, whereas private collectors wouldn't have that same mentality.
My two boys were in scouts from grade school into high school. Camp Miakonda in NW Ohio is one of the oldest scout camps in the country, and they have a scout museum on their property. So please check into a local cub scout pack or boy scout troop and see if you can donate those things so that they can go into a museum. ❤️
Thank you for the videos on your house. You are doing a remarkable job! I keep looking for the next one!
Rent a port a potty on the house site while you are working on it. Sounds like the best option to me. Either that or get a camping toilet and take it to a dump station and empty it every now and then. Problem solved.
Where i live, where you make house, they always make a Toilet by diging some metters in the ground ,then covering it (like a tiny house) ,and making like a seat inside, so you just po po here lol, and when you're done and have a toilet functional, you just cover it all up.
Put a caravan on site
Like saw dust toilets?
Saw dust toilette are the best, we always build them in the garden with a small wood hut around and it's so cheap and smells good🌷🌱🌿
The pellets for a sawdust toilet are super cheap.
The thing to remember about open concept houses is that the noise is going to bounce around and smells too. It's nice to have separate spaces because of that.
That "open concept" wall is likely a shear wall and cannot be removed without structural engineer approval. The diagonal boards are the clue that this is a shear wall. A shear wall keeps the walls from racking under wind or ceiling loads. You may have seen the house under construction collapse because of a lack of shear walls.
On the drywall front, remember that all the drywall that is removed is going to have to be replaced, and they will be full panels that are heavier. You also probably can't fill a bin with drywall without going overweight.
This is one of my favorite series currently on CZcams. Heck, across streaming platforms!
Who knew that subscribing to a fun fiber arts CZcamsr, would lead to this. Looking forward to the end result, and the journey there.
It's such a shame that the home became under such disrepair. I think if the roof had been replaced, most of the damage could have been avoided. I'm assuming a roof is first on your list. Love your videos and following your journey.😊❤
Think she said something about the walls so bad they must open that up and replace parts before they can do the roof. Guess maybe it's not sure the walls can acculy hold a new heavy roof instead of what are on now
I just hope she's making the home Safe, and it will resist, i don't mind much what she changes or not, because is her home, i just look at it, and admire her putting her own life into it , and changing it to be her home, not mine, not your, not someone else, but hers. I love to see her personality thru her home!
She’s explained why she couldn’t do the roof yall are being sexist in my opinion listen to the words coming out of her mouth PLEASE. You cannot put a new roof on walls that aren’t sturdy!!!
@@spacebar9733 eh what?
I believe she has “stopped te bleeding” by tarping the roof until she has a clearer picture of what needs doing.
casually ripping down drywall while she shows the "treasures" is a vibe
Residential plans are not always updated as the structure is built, and they are rarely updated with the AHJ/City after a structure is built. With the concrete block wall I would have a Structural Engineer come look at it after the drywall and insulation are removed. Yes, it’s $750 for an hour of their time but a good SE is really helpful and they can assist you with identifying a lot of issues, or areas for improvement. A good SE will also look at several things if the time you buy is more than what it takes them to look at one issue. On a mid-century modern house that an architect built for themselves, I would absolutely recommend you get an SE involved because that design style sometimes pushed the limit of construction technology at the time it was built, and now that time has past and building technology has improved some structural components of the house may need rebuilt or strengthened. Also, based on the renderings you showed last video you’ll need someone to tell you how to reconfigure load bearing walls.
Very sad that such a beautiful house was forgotten and neglected for so long. This is a big job, sending some energy your way and thank you for sharing the journey
Now with the walls down, I would think about moving a bedroom around. Maybe one downstairs and enlarging the other two. I know this place will never look like it did, but it's going to be beautiful.
One day, you will look back on these hard demolition days and realize just how much fun this renovation was to do. The never ending dry wall to the house taking a leak. A chance to make the home your own. And great news on the asbestos not being anywhere in the home.
those boy scout items absolutley need to go in a museum
What a bummer the wood ceiling panels had to come off. But ya’ll have done so much good work! What a job!

Ok, so I guess when I posted about how I was hoping you could salvage as much of the character and charm and furniture that was left in this home, I spoke way too soon! I didn’t realize it wouldn’t be salvageable & your plans were to completely gut the house. I think it was obviously custom built.
They make houses like that are the Modern ones, but them are super expensive... I love tall houses with big tall windows and doors, and all white with black. I love it. You are fearless, Jenna. Water pouring down from the ceiling. It did not phase you at all. You just grabbed the tub to collect the water. Thanks for this great video today
"faze", not "phase"
I liked the water feature in the kitchen, different….
it wouldn't be very glamorous but maybe renting a porta-potty to keep outside the demo house might help with "breaks" lol
I'd totally inspect that brick column. It might be housing some necessary plumbing or vent runs, plus I'd leave it and make it a feature. Great that there's no asbestos anywhere...big win!!
Well done!!!
Ngl I watch and interact with these videos so you'll have more money to finish your house, even if I don't actually like watching house videos. You deserve a nice home, and I'll do what I can to support that
I love it how you can see that before your mom came you were just throwing drywall everywhere as it went and with her every piece is neatly stacked first on the trolley and then in the bin :D
I feel like for the amount of people working on this house there’s been sooo much progress already!! I’m super excited to see everything come together in the end!

This series is so fun, I look forward to it every week. Keep going yall!
My home is a mid-century ranch home built in 1951. We have a brick chimney that services all the piping/ventilation from the furnace to the attic/roof. Pretty sure that is why you have a chimney that wasn’t on the plans.
So happy to see that you are wearing respirator masks and being careful. So many people don't and it's so important. Your lungs say thank you!
I had just mentioned to my wife that I could see you had the "pre-drywall" drywall. That is, it is not drywall at all. Then you stopped to talk about how heavy it is. Yep. We had the same thing in our 1948 modern style house in Seattle. Late 1940s to early 1950s, a product was used in transition from traditional plaster and lathe, but before drywall or gypsum board was in common use. The product you have is a board product, but not using lightweight gypsum, and instead a heavy "filling" between the paper facing that is more like plaster. Then plaster is applied after the board is up to give a plaster and lathe look. Boy is that "plaster board" product heavy and very dense. It made the old houses from this period very solid and very quiet.
Also, I assume the concrete column you encountered is a flue - maybe for a furnace downstairs?
The reason the drywall is so heavy is you are dealing with what was called rock lath it replaced wood lath in was the the beginning of drywall but they still skim coated the entire wall with plaster and plaster is not light. Now days we have large sheets of drywall and only the seems are coated with light weight drywall compound. That's how it's done in the Midwest in the states anyhow. I've been hanging and finishing drywall for 25 years now.
This house is sending me back to my youth. The railing, the wood walls and ceiling, the oven, the orange walls, even just the long windows and the views out of them. It's incredible!!!
Sir Nicholas didn't disappoint when you asked him to kick the wall. Even I, had a jump scare ^^

I love the “workers are confused” 😂
Thank you for testing for asbestos. Ya'll are smart enough to wear great masks, so I'm not surprised you tested. Once you get the drywall and insulation out, mold clean-up will be a breeze and your house will be better than new.
I can already see how nice this place can be. even at this stage. removing drywall is the worse part
if wood paneling ends up being too expensive to redo for the ceiling, sandblasted plywood looks great for ceilings in midcentury homes.
Thank you Mom and Dad! What great helpers! Looking good!
If you make these awesome videos 40 mins to an hours, I wouldn’t be mad 😂
I love the soft piano music playing while the walls are being kicked in 😂 you’re getting there!!

I’m waiting for the ghosts of the house to say hello :) Usually happens with house renovations, and this lovely 70s home must have quite the history!
Make yourself a ramp down to the dumpster with some plywood. It will save you a lot of time and energy.
That brick wall might be a chimney.
That’s exactly what I was thinking
Looks structural for sure
Exactly what I came to look for in the comments. That floor is technically the second floor as there is a ground floor under that which indeed has the big fire place in the stone and this is most likely it’s chimney.

Serious question, how much more can you demolish before you compromise the basic central structure of the house?
So far they’re only taking down the sheet rock and not the wooden beams so it doesn’t change the structure of the house. But now if they’re gonna start taking down actual wood beams they could be… Especially that brick wall. I would check with a real contractor on that personally.
