Why would we be dedicating an article to understanding an elementary geometry concept such as the polygon?
And why are we combining this with maps in Tableau - aren’t these distinctly separate chart types in Tableau?
Hands up, who knows the relation between spatial shapefiles and polygons?
No hands? Good, then you need to keep reading….
Many will be surprised by the power that can be unlocked by using the polygon shape type in Tableau, especially working with maps in Tableau.
This article will refresh your geometry knowledge, guide you through properly working with polygons in Tableau and explain why this concept is super important when working with maps in Tableau.
As always, in true SuperDataScience spirit, we will be Making the complex simple by explaining the concepts using some real-life examples.
Since you have made the effort to keep reading this far, I will let you in on a little secret as well. Not only will we also share some custom charts that you can create using polygons, but you will also show you how to create maps that you never thought is possible in Tableau. Some more on that later.
But first, let us revisit what we know about polygons.

Excellent! Extremely helpful to understand the basics! I like to create an overlapping map of affected customers for a tornado forecast. I have the customer Address data sheet with the address & a geo JSON file for the path of a tornado. Do you have any video of similar visualization?
    Thanks in advance

Drawing tool for tableau is not active.
    Any alternative for that?

This is really cool! I tried to replicate this but once I drag 'Category' to color, only 1 shape is shaded (Triangle) - I'm using All Shapes dataset. What do you think went wrong? I've checked actions, axis sizing, but this doesn't seem to resolve the issue.

Hi Fugu, it might be that although you have added the secondary "All Shapes" dataset, that you are only including the fields from the original datasource, and not the new "All Shapes" dataset. You can check this by looking for the blue checkmark next to the datasource icon in the Data pane (on left hand side of screen).

This is working, but when I make more shapes, lets say 10 or 20, then Tableau hangs with the .CSV file...
My machines specs are good, but still it hangs and crashes

What laptop or desktop specs does the machine you use have?
