My bike is always outside under a cover and I ride in winter sometimes (salt on the road) and I probably dropped it more often so as I said the NC is a good quality bike :)

    Just coming up on 15000 miles on my 2018 nc750x. Getting 70 to 74 mpg when I'm not riding stoplight to stoplight. Very grateful for your videos. Even if I do spend the money to let a mechanic do the maintenance, it's good to see stuff like how that cowling comes on and off. Also, despite Honda's annoying warnings in the manual to let qualified technicians do everything, I don't see anyway around doing some things myself; like chain tension adjustments for example.

    I do a couple thing different (of course everybody has their own opinion :). I always do it with a warm engine not because it drains better but mostly because I want everything coated in a fresh film of oil for the initial start-up after completion with an empty oil filter. I don't top off my coolant reservoir unless it's at or below the lower fill line because the level will raise when hot under normal operating conditions. just my 2 cents. A lesson for me today: got my nc750x dct serviced by the dealership last April. Because it was the first service, I got it done by them… but they overfilled the sump by 1 liter! 😅 because it was done by a DEALERSHIP, I didn’t care too much about the oil level and just checked if there was oil on the dipstick every now and then.
    Last week it didn’t feel right in my head becuase I watched your video and it only showed oil on the lower part of the dipstick and I did a more accurate level check… so I found the dipstick all the way covered in oil.
    I am a technician myself, so I feel really stupid, but it shows AGAIN not to trust dealerships and only trust myself.
    My thoughts with this are just, if they even do this easy job wrong… how could I trust them with the brakes or chain?? 😅
    For the more complicated jobs I need a professional workshop, because I don’t have a garage, workshop or space available to maintain the bike like you do, but easy jobs I’ll definitely do myself!

    I just checked the coolant level on my 2018 NC - your video reminded me to do so - and found it at the low mark. I was surprised at this since I just changed it a month or so back, and made sure it was full then. Does your bike routinely use coolant?

    • @AfricaTwin-Stuff
      @AfricaTwin-Stuff  Před 2 lety

      It’s not a problem if it’s at the low mark.

    • @AfricaTwin-Stuff
      @AfricaTwin-Stuff  Před 2 lety +1

      There were two items that wore out sooner than I expected.
      One rear wheel bearing went at around 15,000km. I replaced with quality item and it’s still fine at 90,000.
      The OEM chain needed replacing at 20,000. A quality set of chain and sprockets will last 30-40,000km.
      The OEM tyres were rubbish. I believe they are getter on the 2020 and later models.

  • @jkristjanvalk

    Hey I just wanted to ask the following. Looking at the NC750X owner's manual, the periodic maintenance does not call for things like brake/coolant rubber parts replacement, swingarm/steering lubrication, etc. Basically all they say you have to replace is oli, oil filter, spark plugs and air filter. What do you make of that? I mean chassis bearings you can basically just check and fix them once you detect an issue or before a world trip, but rubber parts in brakes, cooling system etc can either kill you or leave you stranded, the manual says "check" under most things but what is there to check on a brake line that may burst after years of use? Weird.

    • @AfricaTwin-Stuff
      @AfricaTwin-Stuff  Před rokem

      Yes. That’s typical of all bike service manuals.
      The “trained mechanic” is supposed to pick up potential issues when doing the periodic maintenance. But good luck with that !

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff Před rokem

      Triumph used to have a 4-year replacement cycle on all fuel lines on the Tiger 1200’s, an expensive schedule for owners. It obviously rubbed up owners the wrong way and the practice was quietly dropped. Some service schedules seem to be designed as a billing mechanism for dealers rather than a real requirement.

    Just a stupid question, but you mentioned the maintenance done by yourself & warranty claims.. isn’t it true that the maintenance should be done according Honda specs? This can be done by yourself, as long you do it according the specs… I had this discussion with my Kia car dealer and in the end I took them to court regarding a defect that had nothing to do with my maintenance actions. I won… so personally I don’t think you’ll loose the warranty
