  • Lawn edging can be done correct and incorrectly with a string trimmer. Learn how to edge with a string trimmer which is know by many names including weed eater, weed wacker, whipper snipper etc. I show you some common mistakes by teaching you how not to edge with a weed eater. Some of the mistakes covered are using too short or too long of line, not wearing eye protection. holding the trimmer wrong, and not keeping the line at the proper angle. If you are not comfortable using a string trimmer, then I would suggest just using a stick edger.

    Excellent video - thank you.
A few pointers from an old hand....
    (1) always wear eye gear
    (2) always wear head set to muffle the sound - my ears were damaged by the time I was 40 yrs old
    (3) edge the sidewalk not the grass and you will never get that 2 inch or 3 inch or 4 inch wedge he was talking about
    (4) I always remove the guard - better angles to work with - just be careful to avoid little rocks, sticks etc
    (5) when trimming trees , ease up, no need tearing up the tree, little short burst
    (6) when trimming wooden fences, mail boxes, avoid 90 deg angle, maybe 45 deg, so you don''t tear up the fence or post
    (7) when trimming flat surfaces, hover over the grass so you don't burn it, hover over and slowly lower trimmer to cut just enough
    (8) don't over cut, you want your trim job to look green, if it looks whitish , you are cutting too much.
you want your trim job to blend in perfectly with the mowed grass so you can't tell the difference.
    (9) when you mow, the grass should look green, if the grass looks white your blade is too low
keep a sharp blade, keep bottom of mower clean
    (10) let your grass grow way over than normal, maybe an extra week or two with plenty of watering,
then cut at a five, if it is still too long, lower to a 4.5, if needed , lower to a 4
until you find the right height for your lawn. Your lawn will be healthier and look much much better.
People ask me, "Man what do you do to your lawn to make it look so lush and green?"
All I do is cut it at the right height.
My front lawn is at a 3.5 or 4, the side of my house is at a 4.5, my back yard is a 5, with a few areas at 3.5
It all depends on the amount of direct sunlight, watering etc
Your trees and your neighbors trees are doing to determine the amount of sunlight you are getting.
    Every yard is different.
    (11) don't always bag, if you cut at the right height, you can almost always mulch....
if you see your lawn is getting to thick, bag a little more often and ease up on watering
until you get it at a good height
    (12) A good mow job is like a good hair cut - so appealing to look at.
    I almost always multiple cut.
some sections of your grass you only go 50% - of the mower, in other words, the width of the cut is only 50% of mower
for my final cut, I like to go circular.
you need a sharp blade and you need multiple cuts if your want it really want a clean cut and no hairs sticking up.
    (12) every time you do a job, score your job, find a standard that works for you.
I aim for at least a 90. Every once and a while I will do an 85 - not do often.
A 95, 96, 97 , 98 is extremely hard to do. There is always something else that can be done - maybe the bushes need a little work,
or maybe the flower beds aren't so perfect, there is always something. I can live with a 90.
For me, higher than 95 takes too much time, and I have other things to do...
    (13) Enjoy your work.

I wish we could find employees, even if they had just 10% of your work ethic/ sense! It's honestly sad and very frustrating when years after you've hired someone and trained them they watch the 1st 20 seconds of a video like this and they completely throw what you trained them out the window. They take what they are paid to do, and instead ruin the customer's yards....then if you don't hold their hand, sit them down or cradle them and give them a binky when you let them know ( alway's politely ) they aren't doing the job the way the owner taught them they automatically get pissed, stomp around and throw shit because you were such a dick to bring up the fact that they are ruining customers yards! If they want to ruin peoples yards do it on their own time. Don't come into a company that pays attention to the quality of their work and try to change it because you somehow "know better" than the owner with 10 year + repeat customers! Do you have any family that need a job and have as much sense as yourself? 🤣

For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. czcams.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.

Most people have never been in a position of authority and when they get their chance to shine they think firing someone will give them some super power . I have had mostly young men do work for me I’m always will to help them out if I see a more efficient way to do things in hopes it will better their performance and give them confidence in their work . Never hurts to help someone out even if your paying them . Thanks for your hard work man keep the videos coming.

Very good instruction, thank you sir! I make a lot of those mistakes and hope with practice I can get better. One problem I have is keeping a consistent pace, not too fast or too slow. Also wandering too close or too far from the edge creating an inconsistent edge. I think some of that is due to walking backwards, but I prefer to walk backwards when I edge because of the direction the head is spinning. In contrast I generally walk forward when I trim, again because of which way the head spins. Someone who does it every day like you would have no problem with either direction. Thank you again for taking the time to make this informative and helpful video!

The most common mistake I see people make edging with a string trimmer is... edging with a string trimmer. It takes a lot of practice to get the skill to edge as well as a stick edger will do, and very few can do it as quickly. To each his own though, whatever works for you and hekps you pay the bills 🤙🏼

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown Před 3 lety

Very few things I won't eat, but collard greens is one of the few. I was at a friend's house when I was 8 for a sleepover. He asked his mom what was for dinner and she said collard greens. I asked him what that was. He gave me some vague description ending with a shrug "They're good." When i tasted my first bite I was horrified at the bitter flavor and got mad at him for misleading me, although in all fairness obviously he liked them. I never tried them again. As an adult I might be able to tolerate or even enjoy them, but we'll never know.

    • @shawnthompson3059
      @shawnthompson3059 Před 3 lety

@@TheLarryBrown I have had collard greens many times and know that the only time they are bitter is when someone didn't wash them properly or you got some greens that went bad. My guess is the greens you had were not washed properly as bad greens have a smell that goes from the house to all over the neighborhood.

  •  Před 4 lety

We always used the guard, but guess what? Yeah, no more guards because they don't do a thing but get in the way. It's easier to maneuver without a guard and no less safe. We've done it both ways for years and I have 17 years experience, so trust me I'm with you brother. I hold it up near my head like you showed, but also wear hearing protection. It's more comfortable for me that way.

whipper snipper, awesome, i'm an aussie and thats what we call them. so nice to know you know the term :). i watched this video about 1 1/2 months ago and i thank you for it. i enjoy doing my lawn now. cant get enough of it. i had a guard on my line but it was annoying so i took it off and trimmer skills improved but then i watched this and realized my line was to short and i use to shimmy sideways and that would take me 40+ minutes for a normal size lawn so i have make it a few inches more and i can now walk backwards and forwards ( backwards is great for doing it precise and forwards for speed ) and because my house is on a hill i need to walk forwards in some parts. i have got a bent shaft one right now but i am going to get a straight one really soon (the bend shaft is just to small and bending over just hurts my back to much). So hopefully my edging improves even more when i get the new one. I love these types of videos, great for the home owner. i'll probably give an update on my new trimmer and how i go with edging with it too.
