The 2003 Fiesta Bowl’s climactic moment deserves a deep rewind | Ohio State vs Miami

  • It’s January 3rd, 2003. We’re at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. The number-one Miami Hurricanes are looking to keep their hopes alive against number-two Ohio State. This snap will decide if we’re going on to a third overtime, or if the Buckeyes get to hoist the National Championship trophy for the first time since 1968. So much has happened since this game first kicked off, and each moment quickly overshadowed the one before it. So to remember how we got to this point, let’s rewind.

Crazy how one game can flip an entire program or organization. This game pushed Ohio State and Miami in different directions for the past 15 years. Fact still remains Ohio state had to win twice. The real calls that altered the game happened with barely a minute in the 4th obvious hold but a obvious completed pass in bounds past the marker for a first down called incomplete. Miami no time outs osu three kneels game over.
Officials from every conference also agreed a penalty occurred in the 2nd OT.
The only thing Miami fans focus on is the guy screaming bad call and PI when it was holding which still is a first down.
Ref called for holding first than PI.
No documentary’s are going to change those facts. Great documentary’s though!

Great job on this. The only thing I felt should have been added, was Ohio State's last offensive play in regulation. Krenzel connected with Gamble on a 3rd down where he was not only held several times during the play, but the catch was clearly in bounds. But the refs called him out of bounds and missed the obvious holding going on. In this day of replay, that gets over turned and Ohio State kneels it three times and the game is over before it ever gets to OT.

Love your deep rewind videos. For this one, though, you ignored a key play that would have added even more drama to your buildup. 2:30 left in regulation, OSU up 17-14, 3rd & 6 from their own 32. They barely got the snap off as the play clock hit :00, then Gamble makes a catch past the 1st down marker that is ruled out of bounds (no replay review in 2003) despite being blatantly held TWICE (no flag). Meanwhile, QB Krenzel was mercilessly thrown to the ground well after the pass was thrown (no flag). If any of the penalties are called (2 holding or roughing the passer) or if Gamble is ruled in bounds, OSU gets a 1st down with 2:18 left and Miami out of time outs. Game over! There would never have been a punt for Roscoe Parrish to return, no game tying field goal, no OT's, no controversial PI.

OSU legit should've won the game in regulation had the refs not completely swallowed their whistles on an obvious Miami PI/Hold on the OSU 3rd down play with about 2 minutes left. OSU would've run out the clock for a 17 to 14 win in regulation. That blatant no call gave Miami life. They got a big punt return, picked up a first down, and kicked a clutch field goal at the gun to force OT.
