42yr old journeyman finisher for 3 yrs & 7 yrs finishing for a local company and i totally agree with you about a hawk or pan & a 4"/5" knife. The man i trained under never used/uses a Bazooka a box or a Banjo. He is faster pulling tape by hand than anyone running a Bazooka ive seen with less dry bubbles or peeling corners. He made a reel for the tape out of the metal bucket handle, slit the bottom of the bucket to feed tape through and pulled a 100' at a time. I would squeeze the tape/mud behind him and am a way better finisher now bc of the talent he had and taught me. He said anyone can use cheater tools or mud a tape seam but a real finisher is known for his corners. Dont get me wrong, glazers are incredible tools but taping and getting true corners w a hawk/pan and a 4",5",6" knife takes skill. So, i totally agree with your video and thank you for your teachings. Its just sad to see how much the trade is dying. Im basically the youngest one doing it around my area. Kids now a days don't want to do hard, dirty, and not so good paying work. I take pride in what i do and my 5" knife never leaves my back pocket. Unless im using it or drop it,but like you of course i have Back up in my pocket. Dropping a knife when on stilts, not so good. Thanks again. Sorry, i draw the line at finishing, no wallpaper for me. Lol

@@jremy89 sorry for the confusion but I was saying that he was faster than anyone I have seen. Being the people ive been on jobs with who were runners. I know that a Bazooka runner, especially one with a mud feeding machine hooked up to it, is definitely faster than anyone pulling and laying tape by hand. We know that time is money when you're doing a job that pays by the foot and not the job. Just wanted to clarify that. I've definitely seen people in the industry who can run a Bazooka w/ a 500' roll of tape in minutes. Same thing goes for someone hand glazing corners vs a self feeding glazer. Impossible for anyone laying by hand opposed to a glazer. That's all. I have to put some pictures of my work for people to see. I've done some pretty incredible and some interesting jobs. Have a great day and may you all be blessed

I used foam on my last house for a few big gaps thanks to your tip. Although, if you use a roller and a corner angle head you get sharp corners that are embedded. Though the cost isn't justified for a homeowner.
I agree on the corner finishers (the flexible sheet metal ones) though. The rounded inside corners drive me nuts.
But I do lile the intimacy of taping with a knife. It's like having a conversation with a corner, lol.

As a DIY homeowner, I would highly recommend first time, or inexperienced homeowner drywallers to consider a paperfaced metal inside corner and outside beads. They are relatively cheap $4-5 each, so if you are only doing small renovations, one or two rooms or a closet it will cost an extra $40-$50, but the amount of headache it will save from not having to deal with improperly bedded corners, or bubbling is worth the cost IMO. Plus it gives you so many easy options to hang a magnetic laser level from any corner.

Those corners need a solid strong backing. During any settling, these larger separations filled with foam will eventually crack> I had a guy come work for me and he did that on a couple new additions. After he did it I told him not to do it anymore. One was for a friend the other for a customer that I did not know. Within 5 years both of these had a hairline crack in a wide crack filled with foam. Always fill those bad ones with some hot mud real fast and never have trouble in the future. I am 59 years old and have owned over 150 rental homes for over 20 years and built new homes for 40 years. I have been able to see how repairs did through the years to change my quality for the better. There is no strength behind those joints, you may get lucky but you are gambling.

Most of the videos I've seen of people using automated tapers had someone following the taper doing the bedding. They just don't show you that part in reels because it isn't awe-inspiring. I'm not sure how you would even be able to do it without that part as the tape joint would be proud of the surface a bit.

I just removed a 1980s windows valance (popcorned even) and now I'm prefilling for taping. What do you do when a screw will not go in flush? It's pretty stuck now and I can't get it go back or forward. I think I need a more powerful drill, mine is a Black and Decker from the early 2000s. The screwhead is sitting a hair above the board. I'm hoping that when I skim coat the whole thing to meet the existing wall that it gets filled in. Wish I'd see this video before I made my 20 minute mud mess this afternoon and did all the prefilling!

Don't hire them if they won't talk to you. I have dealt with this too, it's very frustrating. I do most of the hiring or DIY in my home. Often I prefer to DIY to avoid contractors who are sloppy and or try to take advantage bc as a woman they assume I know nothing about construction/repairs. 😢

I would never install new drywall on a crooked ass wall like that. That room should have been gutted. Do the bones framed square and then dry wall installed and finished. The last thing I wanna do is try to mud seems and a house or somebody call a bunch of corners which happens all the time in the soul called. Do it yourself world. You show people how to save a lot of money. Also how to cut a lot of corners.
