  • Can a $7 rechargeable solar bulb be any good or is it too good to be true? Let's find out!
    In this video we will review a rechargeable LED light bulb by LightMe. This product is made in China and sold on Amazon (link below). It claims to put out 130 lumens, which sounds really good. But how will it compare to a standard house light bulb? Watch and find out.

    I own the same Solar Bulb/Light and I've been quite pleased with the purchase so far (but I haven't put it up to heavy use yet). It works well to light my bedroom/ a single room/or any reasonably sized tent after dark. Well worth the price IMO. This would make for an excellent "After Dark" off grid lighting option as you likely won't need full-time illumination after sunset. I'm planning on ordering more in the near future.

    I got 10 to give as small gifts. We have 3 that are back to are back up slar. They work well for a few bucks. I got mine off ebay for 2.45 each. One has been working for us as a hall light that stays on all night. That was a year ago and it's still working fine. The kids like them as flash lights. We keep one in are truck. Has come in handy 2 times. One was a broken hose and one was jumping a car.
    Thanks for taking the time to show us. God Bless

      You are welcome. How well do they take to being thrown in a car or carried around as a flashlight? It doesn't seem very rugged.

      Fine I got mine off ebay. We hve not had one brake. The 6 year old plays with all the time. She had one in her powerwheel for 5 days. Her dad told me it was out in the rain for 2 of the''s 7 days. But mine are a bit older than yours maybe the are made beater? They do look like yours even the box looks the same. The one in the car we put back in the box after using it. Been working fine..

    I've had two versions of this kind of lantern since January 2016, and even here in the UK they work pretty good. I use one regularly and it averages 6hrs of lighting adequate for a 7x14' store room.

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  Před 7 lety +1

      Really? I would have thought like 2-3 hours. Cool!

      LDSreliance inside they use a cell phone battery typically in 2500mah range I got curious after seeing one taken apart on "big Clive" channel, took mine apart and both have 3000mah Samsung cells, plenty of capacity for the LED's, btw with the large solar charge garden lanterns sold in supermarkets I always upgrade the rechargeable batteries (handy in power failure for lighting walkways/bathrooms enough to move safely)

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  Před 7 lety

      Yeah those things they sell at the hardware store are garbage. They don't last long at all. What do you upgrade them with? 18650 cells?

    • @davidgraemesmith1980
      @davidgraemesmith1980 Před 7 lety

      LDSreliance nothing so drastic lol simply replace 750mah AAA cells with 1300mah AA cells, although I've also fit 4x AA cells into the shaft of one and replaced it's tiny pv panel with one from an old shed lantern (the panel was good but the battery pack that contained 8x AA cells was fire damaged) it lasts for about 8 hours after 4 hours of UK winter sunshine, hasn't had full charge yet.

    They are pretty popular and are going for $10.33 to $17.00 now with or without free shipping. I saw a fellow bought them for $2.25 each a couple years ago and I find that hard to believe as they cost that much to probably make in China, land of the cheaply made products....Just the battery would cost that much.....Maybe a typo.....But I have one on the way for my basement lighting. Free energy is better than not free energy lighting. Cheers!

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah that is why I was fascinated that this cost $6.95 or whatever with free prime shipping. The shipping alone was probably several dollars. So how do these companies make money?

  • @BushImports
    @BushImports Před 5 lety +1

    a 60 watt equivalent led bulb is 800 lumens so 130 lumens is not going to be much. I do think a bulb hanging up like that lights things a lot better than even one of the more powerful lanterns. . Something with the 800 lumens would be great for situations when you have no electric for whatever reason. Thanks man

  • @AdmiralPreparedness
    @AdmiralPreparedness Před 7 lety +2

    Always un wrap the power cords. The coiled up wire becomes a coil and does not allow full current to flow to the battery.,

  • @protomors
    @protomors Před 7 lety +1

    Why did you doubted so much about claimed 150 lumens? Actually it is pretty low. A 40 W incandescent lamp typically has about 300.
    But it is important to understand difference between luminous flux and luminous intensity. Lamp, that you used for comparison, shines in all directions. So they could have the same luminous intensity (it is hard to tell by the video) but LED lamp just illuminates less area.
    Also I am very interested about how long can it last on one charge and how much time it needs to be in the sunlight to charge fully. Maybe you can check it and make another video?

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  Před 7 lety

      It is pretty difficult to test that. I have no way of knowing when the bulb is charged because I don't have access to the battery to measure voltage. I suppose I could put a camera on the bulb and turn it on and then go back and review the footage of when the light dies out but I didn't think of it before wrapping up the video.

  • @SteveBerube
    @SteveBerube Před 7 lety +1

    you should see how much time it takes to charge up and how long the device can stay on - also to compare you would have to at least put some masking tape or electrical tape on part of the cob to mimic the light pattern of the regular bulb..ok seems I was not alone inquiring about charging time and how long it will stay on...at 7 $ maybe if it's not too difficult...a disassembly? see if it's possible ti upgrade the battery inside? just suggestions

    You missed the best part of these camping/emergency backup lights it’s the almost 7hrs of battery life...
    I bought 4 for emergencies and the 4 lights lite up my main floor living room during a power outage for 7-8hrs....
    A lot Safer and brighter than candles...gave one to my son to take it upstairs to his room when the powder goes off and he was a happy camper..
    I bought 4 more for my garden shed..put the solar panels outside(added a tube of silicon sealer ($5.00) to the back and sides of the solar panels to make them water tight
    Been lighting my shed for 2years without worry or issues and it only cost 4x $8.00 plus $5 for tube of silicon sealer😊

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  Před 6 lety +2

      That is a great point. Emergency lighting is the best use for these as they aren't designed for every day use or heavy/rough handling. Intermittent use like you are doing in your shed could also be good. I am glad to hear they are holding up well.

    I have a goal Zero Panel and lantern that I am in the process of a lengthy evaluation. Solar charge and so far, the lantern will stay lit for one hour continuously....More testing to see if I can get more time as the battery is conditioned to peak performance after several cycles....Not there just yet.

    After looking at this chart, I believe that the "15watt" is stating that it's a 15 watt equivalent incandescent bulb. So 130 lumens sounds about right. Which means this bulb is using 2watts or so.
    www.voltlighting.com/article-watts-or-lumens-how-to-choose-the-right-led-bulb-replacement/p/article-watts-or-lumens?gclid=Cj0KEQiAxeTFBRCGmIq_7rGt_r8BEiQANdPqUq_1o8DfwY5vObey8QHq7vt3XfIjOs839KpCF3sWtTMaAi-D8P8HAQ

    • @LDSreliance
      @LDSreliance  Před 7 lety

      Could be. 130 just sounded high since I have had 100 lumen flashlights that seem to produce more light. Maybe it is just because this spreads it in 180 degrees.

    $7 two parts. Lamp, battery, jack, switch, and case. $3.50. Solar panel with 3 meters of wire with USB mini plug. $3.50. I don't have a big fancy phone so I can charge it with the panel using the sun or the lamp if need be.

    next to the on/off switch, is that a day/night light sensor you missed?
    by the way, why compare it with 40 or even 60w multi led corncob coldwhite lights while the box clearly stated 15w?

      You can burn up the charging chip in a cell phone by providing it with less voltage or amperage than it needs. Most are designed to just not charge if the conditions are not right but I have seen iPhones and Android phones try to make do with current that is not ideal and heat up and fail.
