    You sign a waver saying they are not responsible. I've been skydiving, the extent amount of time preparing students, warning and re-warning and reminding people that nothing is certain. Unfortunately things like this can happen.

    • @evangeline77x
      @evangeline77x Před 3 lety +13

      Those waivers don't actually mean anything though, especially if the accident is avoidable and directly caused by negligence. There's no such thing as a legally binding 'death waiver' in the US, you cannot consent to being injured, maimed or killed.
      A family was just awarded 40 million dollars because the skydiving "school" that took their son out on his first jump allowed an uncertified hobby jumper to work as an instructor and unfortunately it lead to the death of both the son and the instructor. The same "school" had 20 other similar deaths occur and numerous serious accidents over the course of their time operating.. So it all really depends on the school, the instructors, were the conditions reasonably safe, and whether or not the business is maintaining industry standard safety protocol and not taking any unreasonable risks with their client's and employee's lives.

    • @ryansiroproductions
      @ryansiroproductions Před 3 lety +3

      To be fair that particular skydiving center has had numerous issues for a long time..many deaths at that place making it sketchy. The top skydiving dropzones rarely ever have these situations because of how they are run and how safety conscious everyone is. Like you said negligence is never an excuse that whole situation is deff not standard across dropzones. However it is a dangerous activity so if something does go wrong out of their control like both main and reserve failing (highly highly highly unlikely) then they are covering themselves.

    I’m a licensed skydiver. The mortality rate in our sport is low. We are trained to prepare for emergencies and our equipment has multiple redundancies. The FAA imposes regulations for the Pilot and Parachute operations. While there is an inherent risk to jumping (same for anything else), deaths do occur occasionally unfortunately. Even if you have no intention of being a skydiver and are content being strapped to someone, ask for licensing. The tandem master and pilot should both be up to date, and ask about the condition of the plane and the parachute system.

    • @flyons78
      @flyons78 Před 4 lety +11

      @Ram Lover It does, and tandems open at a slightly higher altitude than fun jumpers, so there's a little extra time to get problems sorted out. However, that isn't always so easy to accomplish. When your main malfunctions, it can send you into a spin so strong that you blackout or can barely reach for your cutaway ring.

    • @flyons78
      @flyons78 Před 4 lety +10

      @Ram Lover Ahh man! I wish I could do AFF again for my first time. Have fun with it and take your time. Don't be pressured to rush through the levels; give yourself time to absorb the book material and reflect on the jump experience. I don't want to get all "internet expert" on you, but losing your arch during a malfunction is 100% guaranteed. Don't sweat it. I've seen jumpers deploy in kinds of crazy positions, both intentionally and unintentionally. Your reserve is spring loaded. It will catch wind and get above you whether you like it or not. So lock that cutaway process into muscle memory. Really, the simple act of jumping solo, getting under canopy, and landing is about as safe as it gets. You'll learn that it's the extreme maneuvers and other jumpers that will ruin your day. The real dangers are while you're under a perfect canopy. This tandem accident is truly a rare thing.

    Fear is a completely rational thing and you should listen to it most of the time; however, some of the most life defining experiences happen when you’re feeling the most fear. That’s what skydiving is about. It’s about you having the “it” factor that it takes to do something so crazy as jumping from a perfectly good airplane. One thing I learned is that when you’re free falling, you have ZERO fear. All that built up fear before the jump is replaced with peace. Peace amidst the chaos. Yes people die skydiving, but all things set equal, more people still die in car accidents. Don’t let these stories keep you from finding out what it truly means to live, and IF you were to die doing something like this, it would have been a life you could hang your hat on because you didn’t just survive in fear.

    • @PaulCaruso53
      @PaulCaruso53 Před 2 lety +1

      Completely agree. I did a tandem a few years ago and another this year. There is no fear except when the doors first open, then when you hit the airstream it’s a transcendent experience, and joyous. The second time I was calmer and it felt completely natural. These vids cherry pick the tragedies simply because it’s sky diving. If the young girl died during a car accident with her driving instructor ( a far more likely scenario statistically), it wouldn’t make headline news.
