  • So in light of my original FNaF 3 video I decided to make this second one to cover something I really should have in the original, that being the gameplay. It really surprised me that a year later that previous video would blow up so much, and I'm really happy it did. To anyone interested enough to stick around, I hope you enjoy whatever content I pump out in the future!

I've always felt that fnaf 3 was overly hated on just for being a disappointment when it released, despite (in my opinion) having one of the best, most interesting gameplay loops due to the fact it keeps changing through the nights, which is something people criticise the early parts of the series for. I really hope that people will start enjoying this game more now we also have security breach to put things in perspective. God I love this game.

The phantoms were a cool idea. But exceuted poorly. Imo.
Due to how constantly they harass the player. It can be very infuriating.
Unlike BB in Fnaf 2. There's no way to turly defend yourself against the phantoms. And again to add to that there constant harassment of the player adds to that infuriating feeling. There's no real moment to breathe or defend yourself when they constantly attack one after the other.
One way this could have been improved is by giving the player the opportunity to avoid them as much as possible.
Or give a cool down to thier attacks. So that they can't just do jump scare after jump scare.

The only thing I think fnaf 3 was really inferior to the previous ones was the content; in fnaf 1 and 2 you have 5 full nights, a sixth night and a custom night to mess with the animatronics, in fnaf 3 you have 4 full nights since nothing happens in the first night (I love that but he could have compensated by making it a night 0 or making 7 nights instead of 6) then a sixth night and that's it, the only "custom night" in this game is a series of cheats but it falls short. At least the minigames were more content but it ends up feeling like less than the previous games. I still prefer it over 2 tho

I personally love how Springtrap AI, because although he can be easy to deal with he can get lost easily as well if the Phantoms get you or you focus too much on your Systems, this can cause panic which can cause you to just miss him in the cameras. Springtrap was also really fast so just seeing him disappear on the cameras can cause more panic, and mix that in with systems that are constantly failing then you got nothing but panic.

I'm not saying that I'm the biggest fan of fnaf 3, but I do appreciate the emphasis on cameras like you said. The idea of monitoring the animatronics on the cameras is an iconic part of the games and yet in the original 2 games, spending alot of times on the cameras in the later nights was not only unnecessary, but at times detrimental. Fnaf 1 being all about power management, and spending time on the cameras for too long chewed through that
And fnaf 2 made you feel like you were wasting your time on any cameras other than the puppet's, especially because you mostly likely couldn't see anything unless you used up your flashlight battery that you need to save for foxy.

I agree that story was inclusive and Springtrap really did feel like a final boss (his design was pretty cool too). And it is by far the game whose camera system had the biggest importance to the gameplay in the series.
That said, i think the phantoms' non-lethal jumpscares, while fit the theme of a haunted house, somewhat reduce the tension of the jumps in general, weakening the fear factors too. So it think that drags it down considerably.

    • @LloydTheZephyrian
      @LloydTheZephyrian Před 2 lety +8

If you ask me, the non-lethal jumps can still strike fear in you, but not in the way a jumpscare typically does. They themselves aren't so scary, but make you panic because they can easily cause you to lose track of Springtrap.
There's an example in Jojo where an in-universe jumpscare (a dog suddenly barking at a specific character) isn't lethal, but the resulting panic ends up killing the character because he flinches and falls backward before being run over.
I won't say who that character is because it's a major spoiler for part 5, but that's kinda how I see the phantoms. They themselves can't kill you, but they can cause you to panic and lose track of the one thing that CAN kill you.

I get what fnaf 3 was going for, and I still think it's an idea with a lot of potential. That said, my problems with the game lied mostly in the fact that springtrap's mechanics didn't seem to gel well with the static nature of fnaf's cameras. The still images combined with the obnoxious grainy filters made for a frustrating cat and mouse game. What really killed it for me was amount of time sat waiting for systems to be rebooted, often times just after rebooting another one.
Also Springtrap is just not scary to me at all. He's gross, but not in a horrific way. His jumpscares especially are just really goofy.

Honestly, if i had to fix FNAF 3's gameplay, i think i'd know how to do it.
To make the game more oriented on using the cameras, there needs to be more variety and more need to look around.
    *1.*
To do this, we're going to give Springtrap more hiding spots on each camera so he's never moving back to the same spot.
    *2.*
Secondly, we're going to add Phantom Bonnie. This may be confusing, since players might confuse him for Springtrap, but that's exactly the point. Phantom Bonnie will sometimes be hiding on the cameras, similarly to Springtrap, in order to throw off players. When viewed, Phantom bonnie will slowly fade away to make it more obvious that it's a phantom, as well as spooking players who "swear they saw something"
    *3.*
We're going to rework the Ventilation system to stop Springtrap from getting trapped in one area. The longer the Ventilation is down, the more rooms Springtrap can move through at once, starting at 2 and counting up. You can hear wind chime sounds every time Springtrap moves while the ventilation is down, signifying that he's jumped somewhere new. This will allow Springtrap to escape spots he's stuck at and force you to have to scan through all of the rooms to find him. This does have one crucial weakness though, as you can still hear Springtrap getting into the vents, which gives away where he is.
These changes would make the feeling of having trouble finding Springtrap much more intense, as he's actually hiding from the player's view much more significantly, and he's unable to be easily trapped at one vent. He's harder to track down and harder to contain, making him feel more intimidating and lifelike.

    • @dylanobrien3785
      @dylanobrien3785 Před 2 lety

Side note, the game needs to be tweaked obviously or else the Phantoms would be even more hated since you're busy trying to find Springtrap. The other phantoms show up just *slightly* less unless the ventilation is down, and the cameras have 25% less static to make finding Springtrap more satisfying.
On the other hand, the vents will have almost no static at all anymore but will be slightly blurry since it's a different type of camera. This is also to make Springtrap's grotesque design occasionally viewable and to help demonstrate what Phantom Bonnie looks like for the player.

In my opinion fnaf 3 overall has a higher degree of randomness and unpredictability than fnaf 1 and 2, which both makes the game scarier and more challenging. For instance, in the first 2 games, the player could always fall back on a key strategy to beat them. In fnaf 1, it was checking the door lights and monitoring foxy or Freddy's, progress throughout the night. In fnaf 2 it was winding the music box, putting the mask on as soon as you put down the camera before checking the vent lights and flashing the hallway to stall foxy. Essentially, the player's victory only hinged on their ability to repeat a specific set of actions, which caused the games to eventually feel mundane and repetitive. However, in fnaf 3, the arbitrary nature of springtrap's movements, coupled with the sudden, and often untimely, appearance of the phantom Animatronics, makes it so that the player has to improvise their actions in unique ways depending on the situation, hence resulting in a more dynamic form of gameplay that I think is an integral part of the fnaf 3 experience.

FNaF 3, however has very few animatronics, leaving no room for unneccesary content. Extending on what you said last video, about the final boss feel of it, I do agree that nightmare fredbear and Ennard will never be the same. In fact, Nightmare Fredbear was even LESS terrifying in that sence, as he could only be in one place at a time. FNaF 1 and 3 have to be the absolute best in that sence of no unneccesary extras, and an overall feel of dread.

For example, in FNaF 2 it can get kind of annoying to just always be winding up the music box and flashing the hallways all the time, but with FNaF 3 it feels really dynamic, what with trying to avoid Springtrap crawling through the vents or getting too far out of a favorable zone. On Nightmare Mode, and especially on Aggressive difficulty, it feels like the night can play out so many different ways, instead of just one formula. Not to mention that there's a line of progression of Springtrap getting to your room, as opposed to how in many cases you just need to deal with animatronics as they come in other games. Beating the game with all 4 stars felt super satisfying.
    Great video, btw!

Finally someone else who loves FNAF3's gameplay. To me it's one of the more fun FNAF games to play. I love how strategic the gameplay is and the 1 on 1 chess match feel. Maybe more people would enjoy it if they played it more, I know spending more and more time with the game made me appreciate it more as I picked up on more of the little details, like how the timing of when the "he's getting closer" ambience starts is specifically tied to Springtrap getting to cam5 (unless Phantom Freddy is in front of you), and becoming more intense when he's in cam2, which is incredibly useful to know

This is incredibly interesting. I love the points you bring up and how you bring them up. I agree that FNaF 3 is extremely underrated. I myself am guilty of forgetting about it, at times. FNaF 3 was where Springtrap thrived. He just... wasn't as cool after this game, which is sad.
I can disagree with you on a few points, mostly about being the _best_ gameplay. FNaF 3 did have unique and interesting gameplay, which I always love. There's nothing more that I love than unique and interesting gameplay. FNaF 3 was this, and it was what the series needed after having two games with (mostly) similar mechanics. The Freddy head trick was so cool and I'm heartbroken it was forgotten. Despite all this, I really liked FNaF 4's and Sister Location's gameplay, more than 3. FNaF 4 was terrifying, and it was built to be that type of fear you have a child. Scary enemies can come from literally anywhere, even behind you. They pick you up and eat you. Sister Location changed every night, spicing things up so you didn't get used to a singular routine. Some nights you were crawling through vents or across floors. Once you were fixing the place while placating a murder bear, while another you were, funnily enough, trying not to get the William Afton treatment. SL wasn't super scary, but it was really cool. I really liked being able to lead Springtrap through the cameras, and how you had to use it. I wish it was utilized more often in the series, but the cameras were abandoned post-3. Most of the mechanics from FNaF 1-FNaF 3 were abandoned, which really sucks.
Springtrap wasn't that scary to me, honestly. He was creepy and disgusting, and the body horror aspect was fascinating, but not really scary. The Phantoms were really good. They spook-ified the animatronics, which was really good, especially for the end. (Or what was presumably the end) Again, spooky but not super scary.

fnaf 3 is definitely my favorite, gameplay wise. my least favorite part though, is how the hallucinations work. instead of seeing duplicate springtraps whenever a ventilation error happens, it's whenever the lights / alarm is going off. i mean it makes sense, but can turn the gameplay really annoying, fast.

I think it makes the video so much more entertaining and easier to understand when you have a clear example of what you're talking about to illustrate your point, and many people don't necesserly do that, so this is just a quick thank you for the dedication and attention to detail in the stuff you make

I actually quite liked the gameplay to 3. You constantly felt as if you were patching up holes to certain problems instead of simply countering different animatronics. Having to focus on only Springtrap was a pleasant change from 2, where you were bombarded by around 11 characters.
My only complaint would be the phantoms. They act as the catharsis which breaks tension instead of it being Springtrap himself, which ultimately desensitizes the player to much of the fear factor present.
That being said, I love the lore of 3 and it's atmosphere. The putrid green colour and remnants of animatronic props and parts from 1 and 2 make this feel like the cumulation of everything in the series up to now. Add to that the meta style minigames, the soft piano of the good ending, and the fire at the end, and I wouldn't have been too sad if the series ended there and then :)

I would still say that this game suffers in terms of teaching the player, but there are still some really interesting things about it. For instance, I just learned that you can potentially drag Springtrap to CAM 1 even if he’s already in your office, which is pretty cool.

This really covers every reason I absolutely love this game. I always found 1 and 2 boring, because in the earlier nights, you're just waiting for shit to happen, and the later nights (especially in FNAF2) you're just abusing a broken system to always be safe. FNAF3 breaks that, and feels alot more "call & response" than the other games.
It also, as you said, feels alot more personal, but also more intense in a way because of it.
Also, I love actually having to use the cameras, instead of relying on the same 1 cycle over and over again. The game feels a bit more unpredictable, which makes it infinitely more exciting

For me personally, fnaf 3 is all about the plot, I really like how they *cough* ended *cough* William's story and Fazbear at general, sure, there were some flaws, but generally it was pretty good, although, gameplay-wise... It's not terrible, the fact that you need to know how to use pizzarias' loadout to your advantage is great, but for me, it felt a little bit too easy and it almost felt like a grinding, that you need to go through to play minigames and get another piece of a lore.
But it's definitely not a bad game, I still really like it

It's nice to see someone that appreciates this game just as much as me! I always felt like a lot of the things you talked about the game, the creepy setting, knowing you're against (at first) something unknown but at the same time actually evil, the fact that the cameras have to be used in order for you to survive longer and the panic that losing springtrap from your sight cause is unmatched in any game, it feels more like a 'bossfight' kind of experience and that's what i really like about it, compared to other games that when progressing through nights you feel that when you get the gameplay down you just find yourself repeating the same things over and over without paying much attention to the animatronics themselves while in fnaf 3 it feels like any night could play out differently because there isn't a way to completely get rid of springtrap, you just cannot stop paying attention and luring him away from you, also not mentioning the iconic soundtracks, iconic sfx (like the night start sound and such), springtrap's awesome design (also my favorite character in the franchise) and the eerie atmosphere just adds a lot that neither any of the other games have

While all the others have some sort of "clue" that tells you they are coming and you can avoid them, foxy just feels completely random. Another thing I love about FNaF 3 which I didn’t think you mentioned was that, although FNaF 3 is all about keeping track of Springtrap on the cameras, he’s quite hard to find as he often hides on the cameras, and the static that fills the screen when you switch cameras makes it hard to really quickly flip through every camera to find him, only adding to the panic if you’ve lost his location.
