    So, what I'm hearing now on this one way 'can't stop, won't stop' train is that you need a CNC lathe to turn perfectly matched dowel pins from precision ground stock. My vote is to call the CNC side of things Dahm Rotary Precision Machining (RPM). I mean, just think that your slogan could unironically be some version of "RPM: It's over 9,000!"

      Based on your comment I assume you haven't owned a car with 500+hp. I owned a car with 605hp for a couple of years. You get used to the power so quickly, so I really can relate to 570 not being that much power.

    Pro tip. Put your coolant seals in the freezer and take out right when needed. They will shrink to normal size.

    Great job! One note, though. I'm a machinist and everything I've ever heard is to cut cast iron without coolant. It will make a sludge that can cause all kinds of problems. Cast iron can handle heat pretty well because of it's thermal mass, and the short cuts you're making shouldn't cause too much heat in the cutter or the workpiece. Keep learning! you're killing it!

      I think he’s better off running coolant with the reamer. For the exhaust porting would definitely be better off running dry like he did but preferably with air blast just for chip extraction. He will most likely get better TL running dry on it too because it will have less thermal shock on it. Either way going back and forth between aluminum and cast iron the tanks going to get sludgy all that dust will be nearly impossible to clean from the machine between runs especially with how haas coolant drains. He’ll just have to keep the tank clean

      The tanks on those particular machines are very easy to clean. Cast iron won't be an issue. It will stay in its dust form and settle at the bottom. What little that doesn't make its way to the tank will be covered by the oil in the coolant after the water evaporates.

    Can you build these then take them to an engine dyno to get real numbers, or buy your own engine dyno. I think it would be cool to know how much hp is gained by things like the exhaust port.

      @@mostlymotorized I'll give you that in terms of absolute best for strength. Not many small workshops have the gear for forming/rolling external threads. If you have the tooling though, it's the only way for high strength.
      Bear in mind though, even with cut threads, the thread length only needs to be 1.5 times the thread diameter to be as strong as the same diameter bar.

      You don't have to do this yourself, but when he says "on a budget", he's talking about spending less than half of what you'd normally pay for machine work for a "reliable" high HP rotary. He's just showing you what to get done for the cheapest path to 700 HP (on a fkn 1.3, that's insanity)

    With good tool paths, you should be able to get repeatable ports done on the mill with basically a 1/4” or 3/16” 4 flute ballmill endmill.
    Edit: I was meaning the intake, not the exhaust

      Fusion can be kinda clunky machining underneath ledges (in my experiance), and if there was a decent amount of core shift in the castings your datum plate and thus toolpaths may be different from subsequent irons/housings meaning you leave bugger all wall thickness

    Hey Rob some quick tips 1. make a spare base plate for when you wear your current one out so you keep tolerances 2. you need a 5 axis machine min for your bridge porting just to get the accuracy your looking for

      A lot of modern oils used in cnc machines aren't that bad. I never wear gloves at work, and I'm running multiple machines. My hands are fine.

    You need to start looking for a cnc lathe so you can start turning your own dowel bolts, then you can experience single point threading instead of tap and die. Sandvick is the thread tooling to go with. Keep doing awesome things Rob.

    I started 3D printing this summer. Got some machines and some resin. Never done any 3D modeling but yesterday I tested my first RC car wheel which I did all by myself because the "OEM" wheels were breaking under hard use. First test was perfect. The wheel did not break even under full speed of 85km/h. Needs couple of tweaks still but I feel kinda the same happiness rob does in this video. Just amazed I can do something better than factory

    I am literally living vicariously through you Rob. Earlier this week i was thinking about how you would set up a jig to repeatably machine the stock bolt holes to make them dowel bolts aaaand here we are! Lol. Indexing off the stock dowel locations should be perfect since they are a press fit, tolerances will be nicely repeatable and accurate no matter what housings you throw in the machine. Keep up the insane work man, i can't wait to get my hands on my own rotary one of these days.

    Dude I can remember when you first started the rotary engine stuff on your channel, watching you go to shops and so called rotary experts for help in your builds and now you know and can do shit with a rotary that would blow all of their minds. Truly a case of the student becoming the fuckin master. Truthfully I don’t even care about rotary engines but I don’t miss a single video you put out. You took the rotor game to the level beyond the next level and I love it. I can see in 5 years you will be the rotary engine equivalent of Nelson Racing.     Hey Rob, you may be able to use a "lollipop" endmill with some 3D programming to get into the intake ports depending on how steep of an angle you are after... also have you considered getting into land speed? Maybe get into a record book. 😉

    Hey Rob, won’t it be an issue for the dowels to be so accurately fitted into the three pieces, when aluminum and cast iron expand and contract at different rates? Won’t that stress the aluminum at the dowel points?

      I dont know a ton about rotaries, but I'm thinking the coolant routing may keep all materials at a relatively similar temp. Otherwise I don't think Mazda would have used irons along with aluminum housings. I dont get where you are coming from. If the dowels somehow manage to expand too rapidly the you housings could maybe crack. Maybe

      @@arcadiagreen150 I imagine an easy way around that would be to use a material that "releases heat" or contracts faster than all the other parts. Lets say Iron and aluminum both swell a few thousands together but one will contract faster than the other... Just make the dowels out of "that" material so the irons cant contract while the dowel is still expanded. That's my thought.

      Aluminum expands more and faster than iron, so as far as the engine heating up (specifically the dowels), it's good. The only issue would be in cold temperatures where the aluminum would contact more than the dowels, but that won't be an issue given the conditions the engine will be run.
      Edit - thought it over again, and you could be right. As the engine cools down after a run or whatever, the dowel might stay expanded and hold that heat longer than the aluminum, so the faster cooling aluminum might be stressed by contracting onto the expanded dowel...
      Oh well, we'll find out soon enough. Rob's the king of learning what you can and can't do the hard way, that's why we love him haha

    Wow ! You've upped the ante now. Good to see that you are finish reaming and not just drilling. You could do *some* amount of CNC porting on just 3 axis using ball end mills and very well controlled tool paths. Great to see you move from bolting on parts to mods machining....

      I don't think so , billet alloy rotors aren't even a thing. Not sure why with what some of the machines are capable of these days

    Rob your channel's been my favorite for quite a while I built a lot of engines but never a rotary and I think it's time I built one just for fun to see if I can do it. I have a machine shop but no CNC.

    rob, you may want to look into ground gauge pins to use as locating pins for your fixture, they are hardened tool steel so they should last and you can get absurdly precise

    Hey Rob,
    Great job. I think letting those dowels breathe just a little is a good idea. Dissimilar metals used throughout so thermal expansion properties will vary. Solid dowel has no way to expand except out. Love your work.
