Why Universal Studios Orlando Doesn't Have A Spongebob Ride

  • Spongebob Universal Studios Orlando is one property that everyone wants to join Universal Studios rides collection. However, there are many reasons why Spongebob Squarepants Universal Studios has never come to Universal Orlando Resort or any Universal Studios theme park for that matter. These reasons range from money concerns to competition issues, and many can be drawn back to the canceled Spongebob land at Universal Studios Beijing. Is it impossible for the Universal Studios Spongebob ride to come to Universal Studios Orlando? No, but given the reasons mentioned in this video, the likelihood of the Universal Studios Orlando Spongebob ride coming to Universal Studios Florida is definitely not great. Regardless, Universal Studios Orlando 2021 and Universal Studios Florida will still get high quality attractions down the line, and that's all that really matters.

@Maddox021 to add onto Attraction Ideas, this might have been true in the 90s or 2000s, but Universal barely advertises Woody anymore. In my opinion, the minions are by far the new mascot of the park, as Universal loves to advertise them, and while they only have one ride (and a few other rides in Hollywood), the characters are everywhere in the parks.

We can admit that Spongebob is not as “popular” as he once was, BUT he is now regarded as a cultural American symbol like Mickey Mouse (ik it’s a stretch but think about it) .Just think about the reruns and memes that we see CONSTANTLY. Here’s my thoughts. So I’m thinking, they build a spongebob world just like Harry Potter world. We got the whole shindig, we got the characters that come out to see the kids, the food from the show, the different locations like the krusty crab restaurant, and the chum bucket, and you can visit and take some pictures in like spongebobs neighborhood, and you can sell Merch like bubbles and all stuffed animals and that jazz, then we have jelly fish fields and you can have some kind of virtual jellyfish catching thing there. That brings me to rides, so there can be a like mall of America type of thing so a big thrill ride. Or! You can do the rides from gloveworld super easy. Then we have some smaller kid rides, one small kid like roller coaster, then maybe a ride that goes up and down and you sit on hooks like the hooky episode where they sit on hooks and ride them and jump off. There are also like 100 different options for 3D virtual rides as well, just like the Spider-Man one. You can also put out little cardboard cutouts and a tonnn of photo opportunities. And if they want a ride like the train from Harry Potter world, they can just do the bus that they ride in like rock bottom.

I get what you're saying about Spongebob already having a presence in the mall amusement parks, but Universal's version of Spongebob would be so much more immersive and on a different scale. Those rides are basically just a coaster or flat ride with a Spongebob sign at the front of it, where as at Universal it would be most likely an extremely immersive and well themed dark ride, land, and dining locations. I personally don't think we will ever see it happen at Universal though. If they wanted it to happen, I believe it already would have. I think they're focusing most of their attention on Dreamworks, illumination, and Nintendo properties when it comes to anything animated.

You also gotta consider that while Sponebob is big in China, Kung Fu Panda might be even bigger, given it's a major film franchise set in China and utilizing a lot of Chinese mythology. They might've just figured that that could be more profitable.
Still, this is certainly still feasible, and Universal's the only one who could properly do it. The Nickelodeon Universes don't actually go that hard on theming, and SeaWorld can't be trusted with a motion simulator, let alone a dark ride. And I mean that, Battle for Eire is already closed.

I think now would be a good time. The show has been doing well again quality wise, the spinoffs are actually good in my opinion albeit controversial (but let's not get into that), and the third movie just released in the US a few months ago and everything seems to be doing well. Hell the main show and Camp Coral are always the top shows on Paramount+. Spongebob may not be as popular as he was in like 2003 but its very clear Nickelodeon is wanting to try new things with the series to keep it fresh and I think its working. If they put the time, effort, and money into an E ticket (or whatever the equivalent to that at Universal is) attraction for SpongeBob I think it would be a huge success. Not only for kids who love the show now but also the adults now who grew up with it.

About relevance, Harry Potter isn't exactly the most current IP in the cultural zeitgeist and hasn't been for years at this point (and the Magical Beasts franchise sure hasn't done them any favors). And yet the Magical World of Harry Potter is a massive hit to this day, due in large part to nostalgia (and of course the excellence of the attractions and the land's immersion).
