Exactly Vic. I always said that bad cops put good cops lives in danger. They should do more in law enforcement to identify the the bad cops quicker and get them out of there as soon as possible. There were several warning signs for Chauvin that were ignored. Also Reform the police is the right term here. Defund the police always sent the wrong message.

The single best comment I've heard on this subject was "I'm a union steamfitter, and we don't allow someone in this job to stick two pipes together unsupervised until they finish a 5 year apprenticeship. Law enforcement are required to make life and death decisions with a deadly weapon after six months of training, and you're wondering why disasters happen so often?"

Once again Vic talks absolute sense. I was a teacher in the city for the majority of my working life. I always told my students, I don't care what religion, color, nationality, sexual orientation, culture, profession, etc. someone is or is part of. It doesn't matter if they are purple with yellow polka dots. In every "group" there are people who try to do good every day, people who try to do harm every day with most of us in the middle trying to do our best each day, some days succeeding and other days failing. The best we can do is try to be honest with ourselves, realize when we mess up and learn from it and that just because someone is in a certain "position" or "group" does not make them right or wrong all the time. We need to look at each individual, each situation and use our critical thinking to analyze the situation. Do not judge an entire group by a few. If you see a situation in your group, society, world, that needs changing, then do your best to change it and realize there may not be an easy or quick answer.

But as a result of political and judicial decisions, our murder rate is now on the upswing. Last year we had 468 murders and shootings increased about 95% from the previous year.

This one was the best yet considering that we are facing this problem now and it seems like forever. I am sharing this one for sure. A lot of people need to think this way. I know a cop that came out of cop school thinking he was a bad ass. One day a next door neighbor was having a bad sugar level. This new cop thought he could handle himself with this guys problem. Before we knew it my neighbor was beating the cop. Other cops showed up. One cop knew my neighbor and got him the needed sugar to straighten him out. Long story short that new cop has turned out to be the best understanding cop we have in our town now. The school didn’t teach him how to handle himself as soon as he graduated. All the school taught him was he was better than the rest of us because he had a gun. Thank goodness the cop didn’t pull his gun out.

Start by making the academy longer. The cadets go through an 8 week program. Seems to me that 8 weeks isnt long enough to be trained for one of the most challenging and intensive jobs in the country. I think longer and more complex training would be a step in the right direction. Also they need to learn more about the state and federal laws on the books in thier perspective municipalities.

I like the way Chris Rock put it: there are some jobs that just can't have bad apples. Would you fly an airline where they say "most of our pilots land their planes successfully"? That being said, I agree. We could figure this shit out if the politicians actually did their damn job and stop pandering to special interest groups. I'm 100% LEO and I understand the "long blue line" (everyone is entitled to a screwup) but you have to draw the line someplace. IMHO - for what it's worth - it all started after 9/11 with the "warrior cop" training and the "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6" mantras. If you repeatedly tell someone that their life is in danger - guess how they'll react when faced with a potentially dangerous situation? I would not want to be a LEO - it's a thankless job and they need to know that we as a community support them, thank them and appreciate them. They catch a lot of shit and are constantly second guessed.

If a broken tail light stop escalates I doubt it's because of the cop. If you're going to talk about law enforcement "changing with the times" you better first start with a refresher course for folks that don't know how to behave when being questioned by the law.

@@andrewchochola7584 sorry about the typos. That was on my kindle, and it has a mind of its own sometimes.
What I was trying to say is that even Moses had security. People in bangladesh get beaten and killed by cops on the regular without any proof from the accuser. Our justice system works, but we need more people to participate instead of just bitching about things on the internet.
This isn't like humans and goes against our nature to purposely halt or sabotage good things to only make worse things.
We(as a species) need BETTER ideas, not MORE of them passing off as good. The last thing politicians want are people to do what Vic here prescribed.
"Step back, take a deep breath, and think about stuff. In an honest way.
But even if all the world's a stage,(I hope I'm wrong here) this message might be a fart in the wind. People are going to see a tweet from a celebrity or sports legend and it's "game on!"
We might be headed into a situation where nobody wants to be a cop. Then what? Why need legislators if there's nobody to enforce the law?
If the good people outweigh the bad people, then we're still okay.
      As a species.
      Be safe out there.

I haven't heard anyone say there's no bad cops that's a straw man argument.

Oh stop, you know what he means, you're just nitpicking looking to start an argument. Plenty of people out there think there's more bad cops than good.

I agree with you Vic but the problem is the system. It needs to be reformed.

ending qualified immunity is the first step.....police will hate it, at first, but this will allow them to police themselves, and we the people will get to decide the bad apples fate (jury), not some oversight review board.

If everyone did what they were supposed to do, treat everyone like they would be treated, and Respect other people, then we WOULDN'T need police. So if you want someone to Blame, Society, Look In The Mirror....

Criminals need to learn not to resist arrest especially when they have an outstanding warrant. This will help stop some of the madness. And police need more training on how to defuse a situation.
