I asked this question in the main thread, but I guess maybe I should have asked it here, since you were there: Was she originally supposed to be part of the performance, or did she go out there because Willie seemed to be in such distress?

@martinhenderson923 It was planned for her to come in after the second verse. I can't remember how rehearsals went though. We all felt for Willie though.

@@MrBlueskyguy Thanks for the response. I know country loves those walk-ons. I remember back when I was a much younger man and followed country more closely (my wife's not a fan) and George Jones walked on to a Barbara Mandrell song -- I think it was "I was country when country wasn't cool." But this moment with Willie is one that I've never seen nor heard about, and it was touching, to be sure. And I appreciate Palmisano for his treatment of it. This was a really enlightening 10 minutes of my life. Thanks for your response, and I'm glad you were able to be a part of it and that you appreciate it.

This wasn’t the most technical reaction, I didn’t learn how to be a better guitar player or gain some deeper understanding of the theory behind the tune, but I did learn how to be a better performer, how to appreciate the subtleties of both of their performances, and I cried a little bit. This is my favorite thing that you’ve ever done. Thank you.

My mom passed in 2015. She had cancer and dementia, she didn’t recognize her own kids… Near the end we were all with her in her home and flipping down the dial (she loved TV/ music) her favorite singer of all time, Willie Nelson… We came upon a WN concert. For the next 45mins she came out of her fog. Singing along remembering her kids names smiling, lucid, and happy. Once the concert ended, she slipped back into the fog… I’ll always love Willie just for this one hour of happiness back in 2015… The pain, confusion, and fear swept away as Willie sang about being on the road again. Thank you for sharing this and awakening a warm memory in my mind. Music the balm that soothes all ills. Amen 🙏🏻

I was just telling my friends today that one month before my mom died (Alzheimer’s and brain tumor) she sang her and my father’s song - Moon River. When she was finished she gave a heartache type of look downward. She remembered him. He had died 40 years prior to her. It’s the best video and memory of her musical gifts. If you haven’t watched it, look for the Glen Campbell documentary of his journey with Alzheimer’s and songs

This had me in tears, brought back a memory of my grandpa. Had been completely non-responsive for days. A distant cousin came and sang a few old songs he loved. Out of nowhere he woke up and sang along to his favorite old church song. Once the song was over he just went back to sleep with a smile on his face. He died later that evening. Thanks for sharing your story. It triggered that memory of my grandpa, from what feels like a whole lifetime ago.

Michael, I consider this one of your best and most important videos, bar none. Being as I've listened to Willie for 60 years, even years before he had his iconic ponytail and when he had a near crew-cut 'hairstyle', this performance brought me to tears for a 2nd time (original 2019 performance, and then now). It's so hard to watch a legend who could literally play in his sleep (or under a near .40 blood alcohol content), now aged to where he can't even remember a song's lyrics and struggles so hard to perform (yet he did it!, all thanks to Kacey Musgraves).
You're a very special person to recognize the depth of this and to highlight it with this video. Thank you!

I remember watching the 2014 CMA awards show when Kacey did a duet with the queen of country Loretta Lynn. You could see the respect & admiration Kacey had for Loretta and it was a kind of passing of the torch moment. This performance once again shows her respect & admiration for the legends of country music that paved the way for a new generation to follow. I met Kacey in 2014 when she was touring for her "Same Trailer Different Park" album. She was very humble , friendly & down to earth.

Willie Nelson will always be one of my favorite singer/songwriters and the fact he's stuck with one single guitar the entirety of his career shows how much he treasures what's in his life. You can also see that in the people around him - he is loyal to friends and family. I'm not much for the newer artists, coming from an entirely different generation than them, but I can tell you this is special. There's a comment below saying this isn't one of your most technical reviews. Nobody has learned to become a better guitar player. But I think we all have learned there is something special about being kind and considerate, and this review has taught us a little piece of that. Thank you Michael!!

The idea of a true epitome of country is captured in the fog of nostalgia for a time and rural existence that's changed. I'd rather listen to Willie or Waylon or George Jones. They were the lodestones of my rural upbringing but that was generations ago and the rural populace has an access to things wider than terrestrial radio and the inborn folkish catalog of their parents, siblings and peers. Country music for better or worse has changed because the audience and the inhabitants of the country have changed.

While you have a focus on Willie, I would really love to see an analysis/breakdown of the Loving Her was Easier by the Highwaymen (live version). Willie leads that song, and the respect (almost adoration) that each of the 3 other legends show throughout the song is just amazing (Cash, Kristoferson and Jennings). Willie's guitar solo is amazing - as an older learner guitarist I would really appreciate your take on this song and playing so I could maybe one day learn it. Thanks for all of your great work.

Another respect path you could hunt down Michael: Stevie "Guitar" Miller talking about his relationship with a mentor. I don't know if there's video, but I saw his Las Vegas House of Blues concert about a dozen years ago. Perhaps the dozenth time I've seen Steve play. Never have I heard him tell so many tales and switch guitars so many times. He talked about his godfather who taught him his first chords and that influence on his future career. Much respect was expressed for a man for whom Steve had delivered the eulogy in 2009. The guy's name was Les Paul. It was an unusually intimate show, and I think you would find Steve's "tip of the hat" to Les Paul to be rather moving, if you could find any record of it.
Thanks for doing this video - it's awesome!

Willie hasn’t been like this always since then. He must have been temporarily sick here, because I’ve seen him twice after this, and he was strong as hell, singing and playing.

Your best video to date! FYI, I just saw Willie this past April in Laughlin. It was a week before his 90th birthday and he was solid. He may not be the Willie of past but he was still Wille and he kept Trigger very busy that night.

Man…there’s nothing I can say really..tears are flowing watching this. I remember when my dad got to this point in his life. We all did like she did..gently guided Dad through all situations out of honor and respect. Awesome job as always Michael.

Beautiful breakdown of this classic moment on stage. Willie Is still the master! As a performer, I can safely say that we've all been in this situation, where your voice wasn't working or your guitar wasn't sounding right and you become distracted and are unable to continue ans then a bandmate or ,in my case, my wife cones to tge rescue. Thank you for this heartfelt video.

I was fortunate to see Kacey Musgraves open for Willie Nelson and Allison Krauss in Philadelphia in 2014 and it was an incredible opportunity to see the mutual respect across 3 generations. Allison was at the top of her game, Kacey was the rising star-to-be, and Willie was the beloved legend who was struggling but still gave it his all. Each of them went out of their way to honor and respect each other, to let each other shine, and to genuinely relish the success of the other two. You can't fake that and it was inspiring to see. Your video reminded me of that evening and I thank you!

If youve seen Willie the last two years live, he is in top form for being 90. 2019 was a rough year health wise.

I can barely see to type after watching this post. I have seen Willie in concert several times but never hung onto his every word like now. My Mama struggles with her breathing, and it reminded of how scared I feel to hear it. What a thoughtful thing you have done by discussing this performance and the importance of respect & kindness in this world 👏

Mike, this is one of the most touching videos I've ever seen. Thanks so much for your love of music and of us. Country music gets a bum rap (I was teased by a best friend yesterday for listening to the "garbage" as he called it), so it's nice to see it get some love and respect. You are amazing and awesome. God bless you and your family, bro!
