1987 Minnesota Twins had a negative 20 run differential during the regular season and eventually won the World Series.

Ben Rainieri (Sea Level Substack) pointed out in March that the M’s needed a power RH bat in the corner OF position. This will complement Hanigar when facing LH pitching. Luis Robert fits the profile.

Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched. First, win the division, then worry about the rest. Constructing a World Series team on paper is no guarantee to get to the World Series. Look at the Mets last year when they constructed an all star team with $343M payroll and never made it to the playoffs. Last year, the teams that made it to the World Series had lots of warts (Diamondbacks had starting pitcher woes and Rangers had bullpen woes).

Don’t forget that the Diamondbacks finished with -15 run differential for 2023 regular season and made it to the World Series. I agree with TJ. This refutes Lyle’s logic of correlating run differential and playoff performance.

The point of all my comments is that run differential during the regular season doesn’t factor in the playoffs. The playoffs is clean slate where everyone begins with the same record of 0-0. Throw out what happens in the regular season. It doesn’t matter how many wins a team has in the regular season. Anything can happen once you get into the playoffs.

The M’s modus operandi is strong starting pitching, lockdown bullpen, defense, and just enough offense. This won them 90 games in 2021 and 2022 season. Right now, our bullpen needs to get better. Julio is the reason that the offense hasn’t been awesome. When Julio heats up, he protects the rest of the lineup.

I guess the answers reflect whether it's just "ok" to get in the playoffs or would you rather see them do something in the playoffs. The M's have the worst run differential of all the division leaders - thanks in part to playing in the worst division in MLB. Sure, it's enough to win a weak division but it shows the offense stinks & that's how you have the White Sox series - which could have gone the other way if the White Sox were any good. It puts too much pressure on good defense and good pitching to win. The starters have to be Cy Young. The bullpen has to be "Mariano Rivera" every night. There is no margin for error. Playing in the worst division also helps pad our pitching stats - maybe Gilbert doesn't throw a 2 hitter against the Yankees and the M's actually have to score some runs. Our first run through the Yankees/Orioles did not go well. If we don't want to waste this opportunity - a weak division & a great pitching rotation - we need better hitters & better performances from our current hitters which then would be reflected in the run differential.

Everyone should be concerned about this atrocious offense.

Mariners has not hit their full potential yet.

  • @EnjoyerofMiserableMarinersBsbl

Lyle said it best when he mentioned how bad this offense looked against the White Sox…THE WHITE SOX, bro. They’re going nowhere once the playoffs roll around, should they even make it.

Lyle is too focused on run differential. Remember the 2021 season when the M’s had a negative run differential of -51 ,but won 90 games.
