Still not clear to me why the logic isn't по́льзоваться что (accusative) instead of чем (instrumental). Seems like these are translating to something that DOES have an object (use the GPS, use the map books). I see the similarity to things like Я пишу карандашом (write with) but I guess I'm not seeing the distinction.
Just the opposite: пользоваться (чем), использовать (что). Both verbs are translated as “to use”.
Я почти всегда забываю и ошибаюсь с глаголами, которые у них есть - ова.

Обычно мы «используем глагол» (мы не пользователи глаголов 🙂). “Употреблять /употребить” - синоним «использовать» и «пользоваться».

Я об этом ничего не знаю.
