  • Sneak peek: The official opening credits of Masters of the Air, now streaming on Apple TV+ apple.co/_MastersOfTheAir
Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.
The series features a stellar cast led by Academy Award nominee Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann, who are joined by Raff Law, Academy Award nominee Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa.
Hailing from Apple Studios, "Masters of the Air" is executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Television, and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman for Playtone. Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey co-executive produce alongside Playtone’s Steven Shareshian. In addition to writing, Orloff co-executive produces. Graham Yost also serves as co-executive producer. Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Dee Rees and Tim Van Patten serve as directors.

So appreciative of all that put so much into making this film to honor these men. My grandfather, George McKee, was a B-17 pilot for the 390th which was one of the three bomb groups (along with the 100th and 95th) that made up the 13th combat wing; consequently, he flew in a number of the missions detailed in Masters of the Air. When the book came out in 2007 he told me it was the most accurate description he had read of what they experienced. He made a career of the Air Force serving 36 years and rising to the rank of Lieutenant General (he started as a private and air mechanic in 1940). In 1973 he became commander of the 8th Air Force. For those interested in the history of these brave individuals the 8th Air Force Museum just outside of Savannah, GA is fantastic. The 390th Bomb Group also has a museum in Tucson, AZ.

These guys and their buddies all over the world made it safe for us to sleep at night. Words cannot express. My grandfathers came back when many did not. One spent much of his life in his vegetable garden and his job and the other threw himself into work. One of them was a B-17 pilot in the Pacific who said nothing until one summer day when I was visiting we stayed up to watch a re-run of a favourite TV show. When the credits rolled Gramps sat up and said "I know that guy from the war. He was a damn fine pilot." The guy Gramps remembers was Gene Roddenberry. After that I could not get him to stop his stories, I took down everything and recorded as much as I could. It was not until my twenties when I was worried about something stupid that I realized I was older than my grandfather when he flew his first mission.

I was a teen when I first watched Band Of Brothers and fell in love with it, but Masters Of The Air somehow managed the impossible task of becoming my absolute favourite of this WWII trilogy. Since around episode 3 just watching this intro brought tears in a way that nor BOB or The Pacific could. The emotional connection to the characters and missions, the evocation of such a terrible but better time the likes of which my generation will never have the privilege to live was just too strong. MOTA is a true masterpiece and let's hope this doesn't end in a trilogy and given enough time and careful production a new WWII series arises from Playtone and Amblin. The world needs this stories and heroes be showcased with the respect and quality that only this companies can deliver.

I will watch it a few times. That said, for the folks complaining about the opening sequence: both "BoB" and "The Pacific" were highly stylized. Personally, I like the dream-like/memory haze feel that this opening conveys. Also, CGI is a must. The producers aren't going to have real combat scenes with B-17s and BF 109s over the skies of Europe. That is absurd. Finally, "The Pacific" was great, esp. if you have read EB Sledge's and/or Robert Leckie's memoirs.

Majestic. I've been waiting for this. Cannot wait to experience this series. Good to hear a good bit of the main theme is as inspiring as BoB. If this series is 10% as good as BoB, it will be amazing.

I think these video Graphic planes look real enough. In the Battle Of Britain movie the fake Spanish Bf-109s threw me off .
Graphic planes can show the real sizes of large formations much better than real planes can .

Quite literally the best show of the year. I doubt anything will top it in my book.

one of the best, if not the best, intro pieces ever; especially when the strings hit at exactly 1 minute mark, epic...

This is great, but I dont think it beats The Pacific's emotional "ooomph!" That Hans Zimmer is a genius.

it's growing on me, but i agree it's not up to the same level, maybe i'll feel different if the series turns out good.

Read the book..Most do know the fact more 8th Air Force (mostly B-17's) crews were lost than all the KIA casualties in the Pacific. Over 2600 B-17's were shot down each with a 10 man crew. Many are buried at the American cemetery at Normandy. Hollowed ground for so many of our brothers in arms...a journey into the glorious past with this new film. For all those lost, we miss them all then and now. 05/11A
