    Good to know that you don't limit voice type! Tenors can sing lower! Baritones can sing high! Like I always love tenors I seem to just go towards higher male voices it is just a personal thing I enjoy hearing them singing higher. But vocal ranges are great and unique and complex. Most people don't have a small vocal range, most people can have a wide vocal range some just choose not to use it or are told that they shouldn't use it for whatever reason. So it's good to know that you welcome and educate that vocal type is just something to use in a general sense it really gives a person just a sense of where you sing normally. Doesn't mean you can't sing higher if you are normally in the middle range. Anyways Mitch could be considered a counter-tenor as well because he has the capabilities to sing female notes (idk if this is really a thing, counter-tenors I've heard mixed thoughts on it).

      @rydbthatsme Před 5 lety +36

      Dastiel4ever contralto and counter tenor are definitely real just relatively rare. I’m considered Baritone/2ndTenor but I’ve also heard I have the ability to sing in a “female” vocal. So I just look at it like I have a big range and don’t worry about classifying it like Sam suggests.

      I was "2nd tenor" I agree

    • @OrpheusVA
      @OrpheusVA Před 5 lety +5

      Of course you have this ability, because a female(kind of)voice isn't just a certain range of notes you hit. I think more about It's the quality of the sound and the tone.
      I think different male voices can pull off different kinds of 'female' vocals in a convincing way. I mean, I'm not sure about basses, but baritones definitely can sing female parts and even in a way that does sound convincing, not just like a very high male voice.
      I don't think one should worry about voice classifications. It's more productive to focus on what Sam was talking about, about learning all or most of the ways you can utilize your possible range, all the tones and placements and stuff like that, that you can use to reach a lot of stuff, including female parts(at least some).
      I'm not an expert but I did find a lot in common between my voice teacher's and Sam's perspective on this, which makes me very happy because it goes through so well, and after learning with a classical kind of teacher for about a year it's a very needed change.

      That's the thing I think may have been missing from Sam's commentary. Obviously the goal of the voice teacher is to critique the voices and vocal choices, so kudos there. But I agree that the Superfruit channel was for comedy as much or more than music, and Scott was very much joking around, singing completely out of his range and doing it more for laughs. The wig askew, the falsetto... comedy choices. He let Mitch play it much more to his musical strengths.

    I wish Superfruit would watch this back and tell us whether they actually mean to do what Sam explains they do or if they just go for it whichever way they feel better. Because when you listen to Sam you can see that there is a whole lot that goes on behind the scenes and I want to know whether the singers are constantly aware of what they're doing or whether they just go with their gut.

    • @DarthRayj
      @DarthRayj Před 5 lety +81

      If I were to guess, I would say Mitch for sure is making choices, while Scott can sometimes seem a bit more like he's just doing what comes naturally. They have both been singing for decades, however, and certainly have access to professional vocal teachers since they're part of a world-famous singing group, so in their more professional recordings I'm certain they make careful choices. This was ultimately just a bit of fun for Scott's birthday so I'm not sure how much thought they put into it.

    • @VivaCohen
      @VivaCohen Před 5 lety +54

      I agree but I doubt Mitch and Scott just "go with their gut" very often. They've both had a lot of voice lessons for their entire lives and the way they talk about it in interviews it sounds like they know the technical stuff. Especially Mitch. I think they're very, very aware of and particular about what they're doing when they do stuff with Pentatonix. But with Superfruit I think sometimes they just get drunk, slap some face paint on, and do whatever they feel like lol (And by "think" I mean they've said that this is what happens a lot of the time lol)

    • @kathleenmansure7416
      @kathleenmansure7416 Před 5 lety +16

      And I would honestly add that Mitch is the more naturally talented of the two which means that he may sing better a good bit, but Scott has consequently worked harder if you look at all the things he has released on the side and all the competitions he entered before the Sing Off. Mitch is like that kid that got a 98 on a test without studying while Scott studied really hard to get that 96 (not to say that Mitch doesn't work extremely hard to)

    • @elizabethsantersero9597
      @elizabethsantersero9597 Před 5 lety +2

      My take was that they are both crazy talented, with a side of tons of hard work and careful vocal craft...... but they get to take themselves a little less seriously in Superfruit as opposed to Pentatonix. I wondered at the time if Scott was mimicking Kristin Chenoweth's voice in choosing that technique - We've certainly heard him go the other route in more formal pieces, but this was more for fun and to hear Mitch hit those notes ;-)

    • @huitrecouture
      @huitrecouture Před 4 lety +1

      @@kathleenmansure7416 Mitch Grassi has had formal vocal training his entire life and did not become as skilled as he is by "not studying". THAT is why HE's the one who straightens out the parts they each sing when someone is on the wrong note/chord in rehearsals which you can see in the behind the scenes documentaries. Which you can see here at rehearsal tour 2018 getting Scott back in key at 11:10 czcams.com/video/e_NkywR_GsU/video.html

    I could see you getting more and more excited while listening to Mitch's voice... I just love it, haha. he is one of my all-time-favorite singers and I am sincerely hoping to see you review more of him on here. his technique has only improved over the years and I'm eager to hear what you have to say about more recent projects by both Superfruit and Pentatonix. you already noticed in the first PTX video you analyzed, but Kirsten Maldonado is also amazingly talented, and the group's former bass, Avi Kaplan, is incredible.
    I'm a vocalist, and I've always struggled with maintaining a connection up high. every once in a while I'll find it, just while singing in the car or something, but then I totally forget how I did it, haha. it's not easy. all my vocal instructors have been very traditional types who did not teach anything about smoothly transitioning through my break or using my mix. it's unfortunate. my range is already wide the way it is, would prob be nuts if I was instructed well. anyway, I love hearing you talk about everything, helps me understand more about voice all the time.

THAT is a freaking marvel of harmony, emotive storytelling, and highlighting vocal techniques. (I think. It's hard for me to be objective, because I've yet to watch it and *not* get chills.) With Scott it’s hard to tell. I’ve seen him display ability to be able to mix well but usually for fun. I think for him he chooses to use a “chest voice” and a “head voice”. Very rarely in any covers or songs does he display him blending his voice very much. It’s usually hard push of the chest or a type of falsetto. I think most of it is what he does naturally and what he prefers and a small amount could be that he doesn’t know how. From the many songs I’ve heard him it seems he prefers the sound he does and maybe doesn’t like using a connected sound for higher notes as he doesn’t like the quality of them
    Mitch is always been one to blend his voice very well, and it’s pretty rare when he’s off on his voice even live. Only a couple of times have I heard him not as sharp as usual. For the group I think each of their styles work pretty well within, as a solo singer depending on his style I’d say he might change things up

    Yaaaaaaaay! :D Superfruit. When it comes to singers, I'm fascinated by them, and the whole group of Pentatonix. Like, each member brings something different. Both Scott (Glenda) and Mitch (Elphaba) are perfectly capable of changing their vowels and tones to blend better (their video, "EVOLUTION OF LADY GAGA", starts with it), so I think it was just their choice. Defying Gravity is more focused on Elphaba, so it works out here.
    Going further into the whole group, Pentatonix, Scott is actually the most connected, and stands out most of the time. But that's in a whole group dynamic. They all have such amazing control over their instrument, it's practically otherworldly. Clearly, they're alien androids sent to lull us with their singing.
    pssst. one of my favorite live performances of theirs is "Pentatonix - Aha!, Singapore, The Star Vista", where they start with Christus Factus Est, followed by Imogen Heap's Aha!. Of the 3 good live videos of this, the Singapore one is the one where you can hear the voices clearest. There are 2 others, "Aha! - Pentatonix Live (PTX World Tour)", and "Pentatonix - Aha! w/ Christus Factus Est opening...", but Mitch's voice gets drowned out because cameras suck. :( le sad.

    I love that you explain the placement and how it's done not just if something's good or bad. Did you know that this was done in one take? That's why I love that video. They make split second decisions and they're so talented. I don't know how Mitch does what he does.

  • @SixtyDoesStuff
    @SixtyDoesStuff Před 5 lety +105

    I've always been frustrated by how front-facing Scott is in Pentatonix videos because I'm way more interested in Mitch (and Kirsten, but she's not in this video) singing.
    Also, now that you've mentioned the baby whining sound as a technique, I notice it SO MUCH MORE in high notes than I did before!

    • @alyssan62
      @alyssan62 Před 5 lety +5

      Sixty Does Stuff I absolutely agree. I understand Scott is likely the lead because he is a white, straight-passing dude, and therefore likely to reach a wider audience, but I think Mitch and Kirstie are far more interesting singers.

    • @NexTakenouchi
      @NexTakenouchi Před 5 lety +37

      tldr; at the beginning cuz long comment is long.
      Scott provides structure, which is what the others build up on. Mitch and Kirsten have awesome vocals, but they're hard for the average person to access, so Scott, singing the most accessible parts of the song, ends up being in the center. It doesn't mean he's better, it just means he's the one that people connect with the easiest (vocally)
      /tldr;
      ----
      My stupid analogy: Think of a castle. There are towers, the main castle, and then the foundation. Now think of Pentatonix. Mitch and Kirsten are the awesome tower features, Scott is the main structure, and then the bass (formerly Avi, now Matt), and Kevin provide the foundation.
      The towers will stand out. They're awesome to look at. But they're hard to reach, and even harder to climb. Those towers need a strong base to keep them the most sturdy, and that is what Scott provides. That part is often the most accessible to people (in this case, easier to sing), so he ends up in the middle a lot. And the foundation makes it all even stronger, but no one cares about the foundation, because they're job isn't to stand out, but to hold the rest up. *shrug* Rude. lol jk
      So that's why Scott ends up in the middle a lot. It's not intentional, just just the dynamic of the group. To be honest, I was always most interested in Avi. Especially when he was doing poly-overtone singing, because the sound almost sounded synthetic. Plus... I like how bass feels. lol

    • @cannibalcake2
      @cannibalcake2 Před 5 lety +28

      Scott is the best front man because he has a baseline vocal that the others can harmonize with and build off of.
      That being said, if you listen to Superfruit's music (their actual album, not videos like this) Mitch is definitely the main vocal while Scott mostly provides harmony.

    Here's the Rihanna Anti Medley. You can see how they look different and how their intuitive skills together blend and the impeccable clean harmonies. From singing together for a lifetime. Even the way one backs off just the right amount in the background vocals when the other is singing , the flawless timing, the key changes and just the skill to put this together (like the Beyonce and Michael Jackson Evolutions) but it's only TWO guys in the Superfruit medleys.Scott's soulful sound is great on these. Yes most of these are in a studio (I think this was one take).....but their live performances are exactly the same as the studio versions with PTX/Superfruit. czcams.com/video/35o59UA4oBc/video.html

I need a hobby and I've always tried to sing, I was in choir in Jr. High, but never took it to seriously, not because I didn't want to, but I had a lot of issues at home, which I won't go into. I just want to be able to hit the notes I need to and understand what notes I'm actually hitting. I'm buying a better camera today and as soon as it arrives, I'll be setting up lessons.
