- New #poker players make a lot of PREFLOP mistakes, so I wanted to share 7 tips with you to fix these leaks quickly. By replacing losing plays and hands with either increased aggression or folds, preflop gets simpler. And postflop actually gets more profitable too!
Many of these leaks were noticeable in my $1/$2 #VLOG where my opponents routinely made these errors. Open-limping, isolation raising too small, and calling way too often preflop, to name a few. Who TF are you to dictate my play mf
I needed this, I play pokerstars VR, and there’s a player that try’s to school everyone about raising on preflop and how it’s bad and 83% ish a failure. She just always wants to see the flop so she makes her hand. It’s thrown my game off, and I needed this to help me focus on my preflop betting.

@@Maddog316 I play pokerstars vr to and every time i raise pre flop everyone calls or bets a crazy high amount and it doesn't make sense and most of the time they have bad cards and are out of position but manage to hit the flop every time do you have any tips?

Hey James, I'm a big fan of your videos and appreciate the consistency, overall content and visual quality of your videos. There is one thing however that triggers me a little. Your audio. Honestly, it's relatively flat compared to other YT creators and there is a discrepancy in total output volume. Obviously I have no idea which apps/mic/audio interface you use to record and render your content. That said, having a good mic is one thing, but being able to enhance and tweak it with some minor EQ and compressor can go a long way. Either in pre- (OBS built in plugins) or post production (DAW or video editing software).
I hope this might give you a nudge to look further into the matter and I'll be looking forward to hear if you make any progress on this behalf. Best greetings from Germany! 🙂

Re tip 2 - my experience in low limit games is that unless the player is very nitty newer players have the sunk cost fallacy and over call. Therefor if you do this be prepared to play post flop

I have a question.
The situation I play in (live) mainly consists of rec players, a point system play money league (bingo as blinds increase every 7 min).
What is the optimal strategy vs straight forward/tricky limpers who cold call everything preflop? I find when OOP, re raising 4.5x + 1x for each limper isn’t enough.
Should I be re raising 9x?
I'd go tight and aggressive with sizing and cbets. Bigger pots with better cards feels better to me. Figure out where the line is for the opponent and bet that. If you're at a table where standard process isn't working, deviate. If players you can beat insist on having huge pots, thank them.
fyi I haven't played for meaningful money in a decade. I'm mostly just replying so i get the notification if someone replies to you. Aside from basic pot odds, I don't actually understand the minutia of why 2.3 is so much better than 2.5 or 3BBs
This is good stuff but it would be very helpful if you could distinguish whether this is for cash only or tournaments too.
With the big hands tip; in tournaments I like to sometimes slow play vs a small stack of 10bb or less because they'll usually shove on the flop or pre flop. But only heads up
So where do you play live tables? Just to get these tips in person...

Is it okay to open limp from the small blind if it has folded to u, or should I still just raise/fold?

Online it is probly not too bad but in a live game with a drop/rake it makes no sense whatsoever.
"open limping" doesn't apply to the blinds. usually in a live setting if it folds around to the blinds they will chop the pot and move on to the next hand without playing. if the BB is one of those "I don't chop the blinds" players then you should adopt a raise or fold strategy from the SB.
If i am the under the gun with a big hand A/K A/A K/K Q/Q I might limp at a table that has been raising after raising. It really depends on how the other players have been raising and playing. Then lets say it gets raised to 15 at a 1/2 table I come over the top to $45 and see what happens.
This is probably a dumb question. However, if I'm 1st to act and I check doesn't that make me in position by default because now I get to watch everyone else either check or raise and then I can make the final decision on how to act?
The only player who can check pre-flop is the BB, everyone else has to call, raise, or fold. You are only in position when you are the last to act. Limp calling the BB and seeing how everyone else acts does not mean you are in position because you are not last to act.
this strategy works for cash game?
Do you think it's possible to get better while playing free online poker? They will call anything and bet with any hand so i thought i needed to play around that. I know real money is way.different
Question here, and I’m totally serious. What about a limp ONLY preflop strategy. Essentially turn your ENTIRE preflop range into a limp/call range then play passively/aggressively/trappy post flop as needed. Sure your potential hourly will be lower(assuming you’re a winning player at all), but I feel like it would be incredibly difficult to play against/read someone that plays like that. It seems the worst thing about that strategy would be your much lower hourly but you gain an unreadable image and you become extremely risky to 3bet against cause you could literally be limp/calling/ 3betting with anything. Even the tippy top of your range. Someone please explain why this doesn’t work haha.
You answered yourself: "Sure your potential hourly will be lower". while unreadable, your ranges will suffer incredibly EV wise. Doesn't matter if you get an unreadable image if players can just beat you with fundamentals.

The only time I open limp is when I have an aggressive player to my left and I plan to limp raise.
Where i play we pre flop raise to usually 7-15 big blinds and 3 bet 30+ big blinds. Is this normal?

Must be nice to play in a game that 12x gets folds. My most recent example of limp calls was yesterday's game everyone limped and I raised to $40 and every single limper called. Keep in mind this is a 1/2 game with a $200 capped buy in. After that I bumped it up to $100 to get folds. Absolutely insane to have to et 50% of my stack to get folds.
i play a .25 .50 game .. there's been open raises to $25 .. with callers
Yeah, older players at 1/2 will defend the yell out of their blinds.
@cmbsoldja it's a mix of old and young but if anyone at the table gets suited, connected or a pocket pair they are going to see a flop hell or high water. It makes it one big bingo game where skill is greatly diminished. Pretty much just have to wait on premium cards and jam.

When I raise everyone folds and I end up scooping $3. Let them raise and then either call or 3 bet is much more profitable.

As many as you have an edge with =)
I love to open limp with Aces in 2-5 or 5-10 games. You'll always get raised and will have a chance to 3-bet with maybe getting a squeeze in the process. Many times your opp won't put you on aces so you'll have a disguised hand.
It's fine once in awhile but I wouldn't make it your default play from UTG or UTG+1. You then also need to mix in some limp/reraise bluffs like A5s-A2s which will make post-flop very challenging if when called.
How many times have you open limped in the past 1 year and you didn't have AA or KK or QQ or AK? ... I don't think your hand is as disguised as you think.
0:50 that 🐟 needs to raise (or fold) that hand. Personally I'd raise with that hand but limping without supporting information is weirder than wearing jorts
why not open limp if you know you're 35% likely to get raised by a late position and can't call? say you have an agro to your left who will spastically raise once in a while and you just want to see a flop with some suited connecters open limp seems fine but everyone thinks there pros!
The only time I open limp is when I plan on calling a raise and am in early position against aggressive players ... Seems like it makes them crazy and even more aggressive when I do that. .. like a challenge ... Example ... I flop a set and check post flop ... Tends to always make them super aggressive and sticky ... Am I wrong? I don't do it all the time though ... just every so often to mix it up.

This is so weird. What do you mean if you get out of position post-flop? If I start in position, like the dealer, how can I ever get out of position on that hand
Of course your position doesn't change postflop. But pretend you open-raise preflop from UTG. You could be OOP if the button calls you preflop, or you could be IP if only the BB calls you. Does that make more sense?
The “never open limp” advice does not apply to limit Hold’em. In limit no one goes away for one more bet, so the opposite is best: see a flop as cheaply as possible.

So one’s open limping range should be the empty set
If you open limp do you not gain position for the preflop? If your purpose is to cause havoc does an open limp cause that? Particularly if you are willing to re squeeze the squeezer with any hand.
No because you are not last to act
@@moodlesmodular on the preflop would not the open limper be last to act unless everyone limps behind. You can limp fold, limp call, limp jam or limp and see a cheap flop. I can limp see how everyone acts and then decide what i am going to do is that not the definition of position. How about the havoc you can cause is that not useful at times
@MrAntup think about what you are saying, "if I call the big blind (limp), and everyone after me folds, then I was last to act." This is incorrect, they all folded after you called, in other words, they all took actions after you. Furthermore, there is no guarantee they fold, they could just as easily call or raise, which are also actions that happen after you call.

SplitSuit. Also note in a three way pot if you are on the button, you can be out of "reletive position" if the aggressor is second to act (middle position). So you are 1st to act after the aggressor. Just saying....

So, instead of limping KJ offsuit, I should raise 8 bb's? ....... I find in soft microstaked games the players will only call with better, and they'll usually get there. It's not worth 8 bb's to maybe rake in 1.5 bb's, only to later on get called out and lose those 8 bb's.. That's a losing strategy.

A lot of pros really want limping to be treated like the plague even though it's obviously not inherently bad. There are range benefits and hand reading problems that can make only limping/mostly limping a good strategy as well but a lot of pros will just say... 'no that's bad you should raise instead."

Meh not on 1,2 cash games or low stakes. I mean why would you raise high pre flop most of the people on low stakes are scared coz its obvious you got a good hand, if you do this on low stakes table you will win 3 dollars 😂. Low stakes table are for trappers.
The moment I stopped following all those "pro" advices, my game actually improved. I play a 50% range from any position, I limp all my hands. Doing that allows me to get to bubble and final tables most of the time.

Bruh none of this matters, poker has become playing any 2 suited cards, playing any 2 connected cards, playing and calling with any pair to the river, playing any 2 cards with faces on them, playing any A rag, playing any K rag, playing any one off connectors, you raise you get 5 callers and that's after these fool limped in, you push all in you get 5 callers. People buy into tournaments with no clue about how to play the game and have no shame. They don't even understand that players who know how to play can tell when another player doesn't know how to play.The game sucks now, please explain to me how do you beat people like that because IMO it's impossible
