- Alex shows you how to add a Carter Products Stabilizer guide to the Craftsman Tilt Head saw. The Stabilizer allows you to perform intricate tight scroll cuts without adding undue stress to your blade.

When I saw the comment about the reindeer I didn't realize the commenter was being serious. You're an artist!!
If someone would have told me you could make a reindeer with this saw, I would have told them they were nuts. Once again, the Bandsaw God has proven me wrong. Thank you Alex, now I have some work to do getting this rascal tuned up.
I just bought a craftsman bandsaw exactly like the one in this video, setting it up was something I needed to know, I need to purchase that guide and set mine up the same way, thank you so much ..such a good video..
Glad to see the bandsaw guru back
I have had one of these saws now for about 6 years. Took me a bit to get everything lined up and working right. I'm going to have to find a set of those guides. I do more scroll cutting with it than anything else. I haves used the tilt function in the past but really not in a long time. Thanks for all the tips Alex.
That stabilizer will help so much! I have an old scroll saw that stops my heart every time a blade breaks! ...well, almost literally. :) I also have this same saw (above) and will be ordering asap. Between the scroll and the bandsaw, I choose the bandsaw (now). Thanks so much for this video! :)
I have one of these and greatly appreciate your guideance on the proper set up of the saw.
You’re welcome
impressive cutting sir! thanks for the great advice!
That was epic!
Thanks for saving my saw Alex .I have this saw and didn't use it much because I got better results with the jig saw but that's all changed now that I did the tune up as you shown in the video. It's like a new tool in the shop. Now I'm looking to order the stabilizer .
Another great video on this saw~! I've had mine since '91'ish and it's been great. Love the tip about using a piece of whiteboard as an alternate table top. I'll be doing that soon. Thanks much~!
Great video
Great series. Would be great to have the link to find the Carter stabilizer?
Thanks Alex
just got one that was thrown in a deal with a Rockwell table saw. I was going to clean it and sell it, but maybe I'll clean it and use for a while.
that saw ,also has a lower bearing, bearing that the blade rides on or near,it can be adjusted up and down, but the hardeast part to trying to remove it,Iperhaps some one out there knows how
Great video ! Thank you ... Now I just wish you would be able to help me to find pulley replacement for that saw ... Unfortunately my saw shakes quite a bit so even if I wanted to use this attachment it will probably not be the best.
Thanks for the 2 videos I have found where you describe adjusting the guides. I was wondering if you could help me with a problem I have with this bandsaw. The drive pully pin disappeared. I replaced the pin but the pulley does not want to stay square with the drive pulley on the motor. It starts straight but then one side tilts and the pulley wobbles. I get about a month of work out of the bandsaw before the belt falls off, the pin drops out and I need to start over putting everything back into place. Suggestions? I feel like there is too much play between the pulley and the shaft.
I just wanted to say thank you very much for this video. I watched it several years ago when I inherited this saw from my mom who loved using it for her crafts. She got it over 30 years ago and it was like therapy for her, hehe. When I received it, it was not really working so I tinkered with it and got it turned on and rolling. It was these videos that helped me get it really working and useable which meant the world to me. Also got the stabilizer as well, it was awesome. Now that it has been about 3 years of using the saw, the engine finally called it quits and is locked up. It had been a great tool and I loved using it make all kinds of family keepsakes for the kids and grand kids. Now that I have been bitten by the bandsaw bug, could you recommend a comparable bandsaw that I can replace it with?
It’s hard to beat any other Jet or Powermatic 14 inch soles. They are user-friendly and have incredible customer service
@@bandsawlife2660 thank you very much for your reply, i didn't even realize that Powermatic made a saw that small. I always see those huge machines. I will definitely look into seeing if i can find one for a reasonable price. Again, thank you very much for answering and also for those great videos on how to use these things. It has opened up a whole new world for my wife and I and I enjoy the heck out of it.
Hi and thank you for your videos. I have an opportunity to pick up a couple of these fairly cheap in nice condition. My usage would be for anything and everything to do with amateur wood turning. What are your thoughts on this saw for cutting down stock etc for wood turning?
Thank you for your time 👍

I purchased the carter stabalizer for my tilt head after watching this video and it is absolutely fantastic! I have the older 1 hp 1 speed style craftsman tilt head. I had to cut little steel rings off the guide posts to be able to slide the original guides off.
A question I have. Blades absolutely will not sit in the center of the wheel on my tilt head. They want to park much further forward. I have a standard style craftsman band saw and the deepest part of the gullet easily adjusts right to the center of the wheel.
The blades sitting too far forward on the tilt head are making it difficult to properly align and use the carter stabalizer. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Are you adjusting the upper wheel so that the blade moves one way or the other. I believe there’s a slot head screwdriver in the middle of the wheel when you tighten it it causes the blade to go back. If you loosen it it causes the blade to come forward.
cool. been a min since you posted
We’ve been making them and there will be new videos for a few months! Really excited
I have the model with the electronic read out on it? It is missing the battery. Do they still make a battery for it?
Hey thanks man for these videos. I recently purchased a used one and these two videos where very helpful for a newb to owning band saws. This however will only be the first and definitely not the last.
One question. Can you cut steel like 1084 high carbon that’s 1/4-3/8” thick with this saw? If so what band would you recommend?
Sorry but no. You need to slow the speed way down for steel
I have one of those bandsaws with a cabinet base. I would like to upgrade it with the stabilizer but first need to replace the motor that is starting to bog down when sawing. Any suggestions on where to get a motor that fits the mount? I really like the saw and not wanting to buy a new one but have not been able to find a motor.
eBay would be your best bet
@@bandsawlife2660 yeah I've been watching for one but no luck. I was wondering if all motors have the same bolt spacing and just put longer studs in another motor to attach to the mounting bracket?
Alex,
I purchased the same saw from a friend and am setting it up for use, specifically the scroll function. Can I still scroll saw in the meantime if I do not yet have the Carter stablizer guide? Also, wha model of CArter stabilizer guide is needed for the Craftsman bandsaw?
Thanks,
You can you just won’t be able to get as tight a turn, and the perfect straight up and down cut is difficult at best without the stabilizer
Thank you!

Just picked up one of these saws and both thrust bearings are pretty much shot; they're hard to turn with finger pressure. What are the limits of the stabilizer if I were to replace the thrust bearing with this? 1/4" blade? Could you resaw with this, or scroll work only? Is there a good source for replacement thrust bearings somewhere out there?
If you take the bearings to your local bearings supply house they can give you the best option for just upgrading the bearings. Carter’s bearings are all 30000 rpm and will out last just about any on the market. The stabilizer will work for scrolling up to a 1/4” blade
I get this same saw yesterday 113.248321 and the bottom blade guide is missing. I'm new to bandsaws. My question is with only the blue piece with the washer you put on top doesn't need the left and right blade guides? Thank you for the answer and sorry the dumb question!
No need for side or lower guides at all
@Bandsaw Life Thank you very Much Sir!
Do you have a link where we can find the Carter stabilizer for their saw?
carterproducts.com/band-saw-products/band-saw-stabilizer/sears-12-1990-1998-sea1
I know you used an 1/8 inch blade, but will the guide accommodate a 1/4 inch one?
The stabilizer will work for scrolling up to a 1/4” blade
Where can I get that blade stabilizer at I have the same saw
www.carterproducts.com/band-saw-products/band-saw-stabilizer/sears-12-1990-1998-sea1
Been to the site and could not find the sears stabilizer that you show, there was one for $166 but way to high for a 90s bandsaw. What am i missing.? Thanks

@@bandsawlife2660 Thanks, that changes a lot. Now will think about it seriously.
I have a craftsman 12 inch bandsaw. Per the manual, to square the blade, I need to adjust with a set scew. However, it does not matter how much I turn this scew I cannot get the blade square with the table, any suggestions?
I’m not sure I understand. The set screw is just a stop for the head.
@@bandsawlife2660 there is a set screw on L side of table surface.
When you loosen that screws you should be able to move it over.
@@bandsawlife2660 there lies the issue.
How do I change the drive belt? Thanks
I don’t have a video on that saw, but it’s pretty basis.loosen the 4 bolts on the motor to allow slack the retighten
@@bandsawlife2660 thanks for your quick reply! Do you know if I can remove the back / larger portion of the table?? It would give me much better access to the motor:-)
Available on line.$ 90.00 aprox.
So is this a saw you like to use? Curious why you have one.
I think is a handy saw for scroll work. I’ve had many questions on this saw so I thought I might explain it, it is not one of my favorites
@@bandsawlife2660 I've got a small shop and I'm building out my tools slowly but surely. A bandsaw is next on the list. Could you recommend a certain saw?. I'll mostly be doing small stuff nothing requiring a professional grade saw.
Stick with a 14” cast iron frame. All accessories made are made for these saws first
@@bandsawlife2660 Thanks for your help.
