- I recently learned that you can buy transmissions from O’Reilly Auto Parts with a 3-year warranty! Wild! I ordered a 4L80E for my 1967 Pontiac Tempest daily driver that we have been building and it finally arrived!

I got crippled up bad enough to take me out of the repair/fab work on cars and trucks in 2005. I kept up hope of driving again, paying insurance and what not, still holding onto hope... to find out my last operation would leave me even more crippled, no longer any feeling in my lower extremities so just gave up. Why all the sniveling?? I lived in a town that was the size of a postage stamp figuratively speaking. I was heavy equipment repair for most of my life starting very young for dad, in the service and then in the bush camps of alaska where I lived like a king... just toss the crab pot overboard and have fresh crab for a evening meal. Okay, I worked on the allison transmissions in big rigs and stuff in the course of working, spent a lot of time working on their personal rigs out at camp so when my son was struck with cancer, I moved to town. After some time had passed and the funeral stuff was behind me, I found that camp wasn't fun... so I bought property, built a shop on my home property and started working on what ever drove/drug in the doors. I found that cars were easy money and being fairly broke, (cancer ain't cheap) I found myself buried in transmission work. Automatic transmissions are easier than the standard transmission to rebuild so when one came in, have one on the bench being built, one coming out of a rig, and one being finished up on. If I spent my time wisely, I could finish two transmissions a day by myself and trust me, there is a lot of money in repairing these types of transmissions. I did a ton of the 350 and 400 hydramatic transmissions and was going to do the 4l160 transmissions but then got hurt so everything I'd torn down or was in process of working on was shipped out and paid for by me for all of my customers. I agree on the transmissions .. the 4l180 is the way better transmission but finding one that needed repair was not showing up. They worked if you did fluid changes and just did the minimum work to keep them going. Since I never took one apart, I was curious of the 4l series transmissions, are they just a four hundred hydramatic with a overdrive installed? I am sorry as I should of asked my question and left my entire life story out.... at seventy three, I just get kinda lonesome for chit chat
There is nothing wrong with sharing your story, brother. I hope the best for you moving forward. I would try to explain the differences in the two, but you'd be better off typing your question into Google ( there is plenty of info on the two )because I'm sure I'd botch the explanation. Hope you have a good day, brother.
Hi Morgan! Firstly, thanks for watching. I think it’s really cool you used to rebuild transmissions. I actually want to learn how to rebuild a m22 4-speed but I don’t know if I’m over my head….
You’d be correct in assuming it’s similar to a th400 with an overdrive, electronic control and lock up converter. Wishing you all the best. 😊
@@GnarlySpeedShop M21/22, Saginaw 4spd are super easy just have some trans jelly/engine assy lube to keep the needle bearings in their place
@@GnarlySpeedShop Not really sure, but the M22 is not all that complicated. I think you would do fine trying that one. Its the ZF5 or 6 transmissions that are definitely much harder to do. If you do try something like that... buy rubber bands by the bag full as they are completely put together and then lowered into the case. I used new swear words for them!
Hey Morgan, I'm kinda in the same situation so I understand what you're going through, mentally and physically , as for me it affects both. Don't ever give up hope about anything and everything because you will be surprised how the body heal. I come here to watch car 🚗 related stuff as it helps me more than anything else seems to. Also makes me happy to see 👀 the younger generations involved in the muscle car hobby. Take care my friend.
Since you hooked up with Danny, this channel is ten times better than it was. Good job Liv.
I 100% agree and I’m glad other people think so too. It’s been so much fun making videos
yall work good together. Danny is great how he works and shows you the proper way to do things.
Awesome job Guys y'all are doing Great keep it up 👍 from Alabama 🇺🇸 watching 👍

Love the content! You and Danny are a good team
The car is looking good Liv.....rock on
It's going to be a very nice car!! Nothing like restoring an older car. Always keep the old parts, someone is always looking for them.
Thanks! Yes, I kept all the original parts
that dash is lookin good, danny did some great fab work, i had a 64 olds 442 convertible that had that same color interior, cant wait to see more video content on your tempest,, liv.
I really like the way you distressed your radio. Good job
On your stock gauges the far right a clock was available to go there. When you got the full instrumentation the speedo and tach were set up like your new one.
This is a fun build to watch. I always have fun trying new parts on my cars. Cheers U 2.
Hey Liv, your car is coming together one piece at a time. Looking forward to seeing it on the road and the smile on your face. Take care and be safe.
Thanks!
I just love the content on this rig. Awesome.
Thank you for watching 😊
I put a 4L60e on my truck from them it came out great.
Oooo….nice components all around! It’ll be a car to be proud of. Thanks for the update, always enjoy it. Y’all be safe, enjoy the build!🍻
Thanks for watching :)
I remember my rebuild of my 70 el camino turbo 400 conversion from a 350 different yoke HD u joints , but really miss my 57 belair thanks for your videos
Great progress. Loving it
Thanks Joshua!
I think I am as excited as you. I want to see this classic in action. I had a 67 Tempest Sprint with a 4-speed and this makes me think of the great times I had wheeling it around. You and Danny keep up the great work.
Thank you for watching! Very cool to meet another 67 Tempest owner. Even cooler that yours had a 4-speed.
@@GnarlySpeedShop Dropping that fuel efficiency below 30% I'm reckoning only 23-25% of the fuel is usable = bigger fuel bills..... Tesla stator is about the size of a melon is 95+% efficient useable = lower cost....

I bet you can't wait to rock on to the carpenters once you install the stereo, haha , i guess the beach boys will sound great, especially sail on sailor. good luck
It would be some good video watching you guys build your own
Liv Nice sweat shirt. I remember watching John Force at the Late Great O.C.I.R. He seemed to either crash or set himself on fire. What I have would done for the ac panel. Home Depot sells pebble grained sheets of plastic. That or used some wrinkle spray paint. But I understand sometimes you just have to use what you have laying around. Boy do I understand that.
Thanks! I love John Force. And thank you for the tip. I may swing by Home Depot to check it out
@@GnarlySpeedShop No problemo. Just here to pass along some tips that I've learned . Some have been learned the hard way and some just fell into place. The plastic come's in a fairly big sheet so you might need a pickup to haul it home. I rolled mine onto it self and then duct t aped it. So it would not unroll.
Looks nice guys, awesome job!!
Thank you!
Really nice components getting added to this Tempest. I love the old school look. Wishing I had my ‘66 GTO back that I purchased new. Looking forward to the completed project. good luck from an old hot rodder….
Thank you so much! Means a lot to have the support of older generation hot rodders like yourself.
Thow's stearo nob's looked like the original nobs, I believe.
Some solid progress 😉
Thanks for all you do babe ❤️
Good choice. That will handle some HP.
Thanks! My first 4l80e and I’m excited
I love your 67 can't wait to see it done are you going to paint it back the same color.
You are really putting a lot of money into your Tempest and it will be awesome when you get it all finished. That stereo will be banging.
Thank you!
I like there sticker that they have on the back window that says that the driver dont play on the phone
👍👍👍👍
I would have polished all the other knobs before gouging the radio face plate! Oh well!!
Cool that the 4L80 is for a lady 😊
Painting before installing new parts
The feedback I've gotten about the PowerTorque reman transmissions from oreillys has all been positive so far, from the discussions I've had with people who decided to go that route. Their engines, and heads, not so much. I've seen a number of them show up with destroyed threads in the head bolt holes, connecting rod caps, and the cam bearing caps.... Even had one head that had a crack in the water jacket that leaked out of the timing belt tensioner bolt hole. Baffled me as to why is coolant coming out of the timing cover. That was a new one for me!
Danny had great experience with their transmissions in the past and that’s what made me pull the trigger on it! I’ll definitely report back once the car is running. 👍
long time no see😎
wow a company that knows how to lay out a proper gauge pattern,. hopefully you leave the column shifter it is sexy
Tempest is gonna be 😎
I have a 66 tempest I’m turning into a gto mine has factory air , thought about an ls swap but I decided to go with the 400 and 3 two barrels and I am going with factory buckets and consul
Ever going to have a vid where you're putting some parts on the motor, building the motor... wrenching on the car... assembling SOMETHING lol Jebus :-) Nice car though. Spending a few bucks on the old girl. Nice!
Watch the newest 2 videos on the channel
what did you do with the vent flap and shut air for speaker. great video, I"m rebuilding a 1966 Impala convertable
Don’t cut the knobs. Heat the metal with a soldering iron and the plastic knobs will self size. Old guitar electronics trick.
love the build but......
did you consider a manual trans? They are a pain in stop and go traffic but are so fun rowing thru the gears.
Keep up the good work! love the videos
I definitely considered but after pricing out a manual conversion, it would’ve cost more $$$. My next build will definitely have a t56 though!
Hey liv the car is early coming along nice great choices you have made on all your new up grades Danny is so lucky to have a car girl like you .I live in Louisiana and there is a really nice gold 67 GTO for sale a couple miles away it's a pro street /drag car really a clean car not a LS but does have a killer 400 in it keep doing what you do and I'll say I am jealous of Danny for having such a cool girl friend to share his hobby and passion and life with good luck in yalls future your friend from Louisiana Rick 427
Aw too kind! Thank you for your continued support Rick 😊
That was suppose to be the car is really coming along my phone thinks it's smarter then me just like my x wife...lol
I would have gotten a pull switch for line lock and got a factory knob for it
Wow Olivia I could of built you one. Are you going to add a switch to turn off 4th gear? Sometimes it will go into 4th gear at 35 Mph and bog the engine. The switch will lock out 4th gear so once your on a expressway you can turn on the switch. Just wondered.
Very cool video and nice build. Do you both ever go to Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank? Lots of nice cars and interesting people there if you don’t. Keep up the great work!
I’ve been before! It’s a great show. A little bit of a drive for us but maybe we’ll head back that way soon!
@@GnarlySpeedShop nice! What area you two from?
Camarillo
@@GnarlySpeedShop nice! Makes sense why Wilwood took your car 😉. Very cool, I think there are some good car shows up that way from time to time.
how about a nice analog clock by the hvac switch leave the switches on the dash
😁👍
I had a 4l60e in my 97 c1500 and the truck has been through four of them. Got tired of it and went to the wrecking yard and pulled one out of a chevy express van that had a huge puddle/swamp underneath it. After I pulled the tranny and check the inside of it I realized why it was there. Turned out the van had gotten flooded and so did the tranny. I full sent it and installed it in my truck and did everything I had to to get it to work. I flushed it multiple times and got all the water out and it works great. Try doing that with a 4l60e.
I wish I could find a beautiful young lady like Liv to revive my old worn out body and give it new life! 😉 JK, Liv. You're doing a great job with that car. I love how you're modernizing it without making it look modern. I can't wait to see more on this car. 😂 I just said "moron".
Hello Liv ,
Enjoying your videos & looking forward to progress on the Tempest . Saw your recent video where you showed us the cars for rent . Located in Manitoba & spend a month in California during the Winter . Will the Tempest be available for rent ?
Hey! I wasn’t planning on renting it out the Tempest but who knows! We’ll see what happens once we get it running/driving. :) Grease Lightning is always available on Turo if you need a sweet ride.
machine turn the little plate, before a set of toggles
Vintage air doesn't have a conversion kit to use your original controller? Being able to lay under the dash for hours without back pain is wasted on the young and flexible.
There's also valve covers that cover up the coil packs to make it look ole school
I considered those!
$800 core charge???
Alright, Tempest time, love it!
😁
So glad to see you stepping away from carburetors. But bad decision on the coils. No reason to swap from factory. Guys are running well over 1000hp builds and doing great with them. You will see no gains from aftermarket coils.
No ….granatelli coil packs kick ass, i run a set on my LSA nova…..you definitely feel a diffrence
@@trentdawg2832 not on an LS you don't. They have done the test on the Dyno. No change.
