Finally a video about GGS defense that doesn't just trash talk it because "There aren't enough options"
This video is criminally underrated, Godspeed man
This channel is criminally underrated
It's because we come from games like Tekken where defensive options are REALLY strong
That intro is why I stop playing fighterz. I'm trash at it, but man. Blocking for 15 years just ages me.
Yeah, I often wonder what DBFZ would play like if it had a pushblock mechanic
I bought fighterz after strive and I still can't get into it. Strive is just too good.
@@BrendanMushilol it does
I played dbfz before strive
5 seconds in and it's already sharper jokes than my kitchen knife
That entire intro spoke to my soul 🤣
I appreciate the "realness" of this video Sir. Thanks im subscribed keep it up.
Definitely need to incorporate more up back in my defensive gameplan. Dope video
Thanks so much for the video, it opened my mind that i actually have control to mix while in defense. Really great approach to the subject too: clear, direct, w examples !!
Yo this video is faaaaaaantastic! Looks like a ton of work to make, SUPER helpful and informative, and funny to boot. TOP tier FGC content 👍
Sick choice of BGM tunes
Just what I needed. So glad I found this channel in my recommends, so many good vids including this masterpiece. Thanks for a great material!
I know this video is 2 years old but my god man, these videos are so good. They flow well, you have great presence and charisma and real interesting ways to communicate ideas. I genuinely but some of these videos on loop just so I really take the lessons to heart but I never have issue since overall the vids are so good.
Fantastic video with a TON of information, I will need to watch it multiple times to understand it and implement it into my game. Thank you so much!
This is the best fighting game guide. So many guides go over offense, combos, advanced tactics, yet something so universal and quintessential as defense goes ignored. I use these tips often and beat players I really have no business beating because I have this knowledge. Thank you for this.
Aaah, I've been hoping to find something like this! Very helpful to start making some progress not just with tech, but mindset \o/ Thank you for making it!
Thanks for this video !!
great video, so many little details are covered. we should have more video like this
Awesome vid, man. Thank you.
This will be really helpful for a new player like myself.
Insane good vid
This is a great video for a small channel. Good stuff.
Very helpful, thanks! Hoping for that neutral guide in the future if you do get a chance
One of the best vids on defense I’ve ever seen. Never considered that I was trying to mix and condition my opponent on defense as well as offense. Thank you for this
awesome video a lot of people (including me) are going to learn a lot from this. Song list?
Loving these tekken BGMs!
I'm here cause Baccpack recommended this video and told me to tell you this video is very pogchamp. Actually this is very useful and well articulated! Thank you for making it! ❤️
Thank you! Baccpack is the homie, love his videos!
This is amazing!
People talk about combos and situations etc but not enough people are talking about mindset
And dude, hell YES, i would love watch your video on the neutral
Thank you for this!! I need better defense in fighting games. This helps a lot. Just got into ggst but man the community Is still going strong.
Found this late but great video. So helpful
Very good video for new players like me. Found this very helpful.
Great guide
Man this video is absolutely amazing. I wish I got it recommended a few months ago when I was just starting playing. Even now it was really useful. Great work my dude!
Thanks so much, that means a lot!
@@BrendanMushi By the way, a year has passed and now we see a lot more people using instant block and instant fd! Especially at high level, you can see people using it pretty consistently, so you called it lol
Thank you brother 🌹🌹
found this video 2 years too late haha but better late than never. Got mopped by Ky online, now im doing my due diligence for improving my game! very informative and gives me more confidence in defensive situations.
Yo, I find myself panic mashing and doing stupid stuff on defense all the time. This video is great, gonna try to take this stuff to heart. Thanks!
Please make that neutral vid! I'd love that,, this vid was great and filled in some gaps in my knowledge that was frustrating me in my matches. Just got to 8F and hoping to stay there :)
I'm a brand new player. I'm playing with my friend who plays baiken and has been playing for a really long time
I've been watching guides and whatnot but no one has gone over this stuff yet. So thanks.
Wanted to sub twice
This is fantastic man. Looking forward to that neutral video ;). Thanks for all the hard work.
Great video...I definitely feel lost sometimes on defense and I think this will help
Even at high levels of play defending in fighting games can be stressful especially in Strive where it's especially punishing. Always remember that nobody is cut from a different cloth, but I'm glad I could help!
The greatest part of this video is the the mindset on defense applies to every fighting. I found this video so helpful.
that Chipp-mashing-DP bit 😭 crushed me like Chipp gets crushed blocking the f o u r t h Fafnir in a row
Intro is 100% accurate
I learned a lot from this. I play very erratically, but now I know it’s just thinking outside of the box! 😏
When you learn common timings IB gets pretty reasonable and even if you don't hit it you can err on the side of the faster timings and at least worst case scenario you just block...I get lots of mileage on pretty predictable stuff like Leo's bt. HS, Sol f.S > f.S, or most characters' 2D that they always do after 2K. I think it's a good habit to at least start trying to time your blocks, you'll hit it more often than you think
i like how u use the n-word lol... it has a classy thone
I miss Xrd's blitz.
I miss danger time and Johnny
i love how different games have different mentalities in defense. While in strive and SF it's ok to take a throw, in skullgirls you will just watch your HP drain after the throw
Shit game. Dope graphics but it's basically a memory game.
@@HereTakeAFlower that’s… most fighting games dude. Sorry that characters have unique options to mix/convert off of???
@@bluejay7058 I don't like having to spectate for five minutes as the other guy hits me with a 300 hits tod.
@@HereTakeAFlower Well there is a way to play against that, albiet not directly. Burst exists but of course the context isn't always great.
You just have to accept that game devs put that stuff in for people to use and that people will use it. If that's not your thing, it ain't your thing and there's no shame in that!
@@bluejay7058 I switched to GGST. No more 300 hit combos (except Zato, maybe), no more tods (or extremely rare), fast games, and fire soundtrack.
2:24 Damn
This video is just a pep talk.
>"its not just guessing"
>"i just dp'd 7 times and didn't dp the 8th time. I'm a genius"
I NEED TO KNOW whats the song in 10:08
You're underselling YRC I feel. No defensive option is perfect so the fact the opponent can do something like reversal super doesn't make it not good. The opponent can reversal super in most offensive situations too it doesn't mean they're not good. Being + frames up close is a valuable option, especially for characters like HC who have no reversal and who have no DP. On the flip side also vs characters with no reversal it's stronger too. Most defensive options have huge weaknesses. If you think the risk reward is bad you didn't really explain that well, I feel most of the criticisms you gave go for every defensive option except that it costs meter.
Really good video though.
Wish i could wake up DP with Giovanna
😔
"meaty" makes no sense to me as a term for a attacks that have a lot of active frames. Are active frames somehow comparable to having more meat? Fuzzy at least makes some sense since its between hard states so which state you are in is uncertain or fuzzy as opposed to clear.
I just be like, so when can i attack Eddie?
Defense just means I get to sit back and relax while they’re tryna make good decisions
I really hate the term fuzzy and think it overwhelms new players in name. So many new players think it's some complicated maneuver and isn't worth learning until they're way better. And it's just like... Block timing. You really going to learn a 110 damage throw RC combo scaled at 50% before you learn how to block?
SF players that converted to anime:
"Take the throw... that's a name I haven't heard, in a long time." -Ryu Wan Kenobi
Other people: 15 second block strings
Me(using gio): dash 5k, tick throw or dash 5k, 5k or dash 5k 2s, or dash grab, then using complete block strings to reset the pressure only so that they don't see the incomplete block string into dash grab🤡
But I'm new and getting in to begin this evil is rough. Just need to learn half health combos, rc stuff and match ups
Kid version of me: Why is it called "Stroke the big tree"? 🤔
How do u do a yellow roman cancel?
You input a roman cancel while you’re blocking
So we’re not gonna talk about how he’s actually mixing the fuck out of everyone he’s playing in the background God like
Best mindset for blocking:
"I didn't buy this game to block"
what the fcuk is a dp???
All these options yet people say defense in guilty gears is trash...
Also, your zato looks scary af.
Thanks and the hilarious part was I had pretty much finished this video right before that whole discourse started
honestly, I DID pay to block
You: *drops the n word*
Me: *checks your insta*
"Oh phew okay"
he said burst an uncomfortable amount of times lmao
Throw loops are annoying though.
Yeah, they definitely can be. The way I try to look at it is that a throw does a decent chunk of damage and leads to the same situation, but every time they go for a throw they're basically risking losing 50%+ of their lifebar that you won't backdash (assuming they don't have 50% meter to PRC the throw)
You have 5 frames of throw invincibility on wake so if you think they're going to throw again you can just jab or close slash into a full counter hit combo or neutral jump and block to see if they whiff the throw then come down on them with H into full combo. Also back dash and super is always an option
@@itsjustavi unless your characters fastest normal is 6 frames then they punish you because the throw animation comes out faster. Close slash on wake up will also get grabbed as well. Back dash is a really good option though.
On Defense there's a few things I believe you left out:
Faultless Defense actually NEGATES all Chip-Damage. Which is crucial against slowing having your HP eroded and avoid dying on the last parts of the round. Use it to survive or preserve your health.
Also, Wakeup BRC Backwards or Neutral BRC Backwards can cause plenty of Opponents to whiff a throw/grab or whiff an attack which is priceless. Allowing you to rush in for a grab or long range Counter Attack etc.
It's important to mention Safe Jumps too, something some characters have in abundance and very deadly, while some can even punish your Backdash as well: like Giovanna - who has Safejump after everything basically and can punish a Backdash from a safejump too with 2S.
Finally there's also Punishing Opponents Backdash you in order to dodge and whiff Punish a Throw Whiff:
There's 2 great Countermeasures I found, which can totally turn the tide:
If you have conditioned them to avoid Throws, by throwing them a lot, be it on Wake-up, Neutral or Strike-Throw / Tick Throw situations:
1) Now you can run up to bait a backdash and press an attack that has long range and/or lots of Active Framea - for example Ky f.S is excellent in punishing Back Dash, because even if they i-frame part of it, they get hit at the tail end of the Back-Dasg, after i-frame end!
2) Another option is to run up - wait for them to BD - then EXTEND THE RUN - and THROW anyway!! Basically they expect you to stop and throw at X range, but when you extend and delay to a longer run - you suddenly still in their face - delayed enough to catch them with a delayed Throw - just as they exist Throw Invulnerable state!!
You can even use a Super during their Backdash because THEY CAN'T BLOCK MID BACKDASH!
Yeah, there were some things I didn't mention such as FD negating chip damage because I felt like at this stage of the game some things were widely known, but in hindsight I probably should have included things like that for the sake of completion, but I do appreciate people helping out and letting people know about other things I didn't have time to include!
