My first band supported T2 back in the 1970's at the Albermarle Club in Romford. Keith Cross had left by then but they were still great. I also saw them when they reformed in the 1990's when they released a couple of more albums. Peter, the drummer was a great guy who sadly passed away a couple of years ago. But Boomland is certainly worthy of all the love being shown here. A classic album.

I knew T2 from an American guy who religiously followed British rock at this time. That Boomland album is amazing. I think Dylan from the Noble Records channel is also a fan of it. This comp looks incredible. The only other track I knew was Tintern Abbey. The fact we still get to discover "new" music from this golden age is such a gift.

Great review Phil. Almost all of these psych bands were comped back in the eighties on vinyl by Phil Smee, who is a fan, former owner of Bam Caruso Records, and now has a graphic arts company that designs record sleeves and artwork for boxed sets. Phil's series of psych records is called Rubble and is the Holy Grail for this type of music. There are 20 volumes of Rubble each with 16 tracks. It is available as a CD box set. Many of the artists in those bands turned up a few years later in well-known prog bands. The band Fire, that you mentioned contained Hudson and Ford who turned up in Strawbs and later went solo. The band Khan had Steve Hillage as its guitarist. T2 is Peter Dunton's band. The guitarist for T2 wound up in Bulldog Breed. Phil Smee is English and still with us. I think you should interview him. David Wells (Tenth Planet Records, Grapefruit) is a label manager for Cherry Red Records. He is an expert on psych music. He would be another great interview. Living in the US I used to think I missed out on all these obscure bands by not living in England. It took me decades to figure out that not many people in England ever saw or heard any of this great music until people like Phil Smee and David Wells made the music available. I think they should be knighted for musical services to the UK. One other thing to note is the difference between US psych and British psych from that period. Yes, we had early Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger Service, but the second and third tier American bands were very heavy handed compared to their British counterparts. What I love about the British approach is the light psych flourishes. American bands of the period would beat you over the head to make sure you knew they were a psych band (my opinion). An example would be the song It's A Happening by The Magic Mushrooms....it's pretty hard to listen to today.

Hi Phil - WOW that looks amazing, and right down my alley - I mean I was there in 66 lolol. Use to have Bumpers and Nice Enough To Eat and others- they were all great. Like you, I know a few of those bands on Psych but not the majority. Another great compilation I use to have in the day, was "Fill Your Head With Rock" - remember that one ? Brilliant. I will have a look around for Psych and see if its available out here. Cheers Doug

Thanks, Phil. I didn't have the original album by T2. So, it brought back memories of that original group, who were way ahead of their time. I couldn't afford an original copy from Decca. The re-release was not great for sound quality, but the more recent release has great audio quality. Many thanks.

    Thanks for the recommendation

Thanks Phil, this sounds very interesting! I discovered T2 in the 90s ,way after this period we lived through. It is wonderful to keep discovering new music. The T2 guitarist Keith Cross was only a teenager but what a player! There are 2 of T2 s albums out there, which i have. I shall be getting the 3 CD set as i am sure there will be much that is new to me.

Top review Phil. This set will be a must for many. The T2 album is called 'It'll all work out in Boomland', and it's another lost classic. Cherry Red did a very good 3 disc expanded version a few years back. If you get it, you might feel compelled to do a review.

Hi Phil, i had a funny feeling you were going to say T2, i've had the LP from the beginning and it still sounds great, it's one of my favourite albums from this era. I just know you are going to love it, Three tracks side one, side long epic on two, Keith Cross, the guitar player was 17, when they made that album. I also have quite a few of those old "sampler albums". Will have to check this one out Phil, cheers.

Cor, Phil - your copies of Nice Enough To Eat and Bumpers look absolutely mint, unlike my own. Jealous! I reviewed the former for Julian Cope's Head Heritage website many years ago and still stand by my words that it's a fabulous cross section of the amazing Island roster of the time. Psych! sounds like just the sort of collection I love. You're right that the period it covers is unbelievably creative and timeless. Order placed! Thanks for another stimulating show.

Great show Phil, will be looking for that cd for the obscure tracks it contains.. Enter the psych rabbit hole 1966-1975 Phil , you will be unable to get out. The sounds will entrap you and you will be forever searching for the next great track. Thousands of bands worldwide put out 45's and albums during this time period, it's a psychedelic maze with no exit. First heard T2 in 1972 on a Canadian pressing. Check out their second album, unreleased at the time , it is a great listen as well. Cheers.

Hi Phil, Love the nostalgic albums Bumpers which I own and Nice Enough to Eat which I don't. Every time I see them, another Island compilation album You Can All Join In comes to my mind as I think it has one of my favourite album covers of all time. I bought that album just for that initially! Besides, you mentioned T2, their sole album It'll All Work Out in Boomland is also one of the albums I treasure most. I think the vinyl might be a bit expensive to get these days but Cherry Red did release a very good compilation of all their output which I also bought recently. Check it out before it runs out! Thanks for your video as always.

New Day Yesterday is one of the best books written on music ever! Fun review Phil. Will probably get the cd version of this for the same reason I got Hepworth’s cd compilation instead of vinyls - one simply gets the bigger picture. I tend to get the comps from Esoteric/Cherryred as they are so lovingly and intelligently compiled.

The band MAN from Wales were supposedly inspired by the style of Quick Silver Messenger Service. This is true to degrees...however the album BACK INTO THE FUTURE is also more progressive sounding or even Space Rock. Many European bands were generally more eclectic or perhaps their creativity differed from most American bands.
On another note Roger Waters has stated in the past that Syd Barrett listened to several American bands. Oddly enough the song LATHER by JEFFERSON AIRPLANE reminds me of a song that Syd Barrett would have recorded for one of his solo albums...however that's a rare case . Growing up in America the majority of teenagers in music class , high school band, and Rock bands were obsessed with British bands. The way they dressed, their hair style, their harder edge to Rock n' Roll etc. It's true that America had BLUE CHEER and MC5...and they were different from most American bands, but British bands were an empire that influenced most of the American youth in the 60s and 70s...no doubt they were the most creative and influential.
