What is Replacement Theology? Steve Gregg | Lecture 1 of "What Are We To Make of Israel?"

  • thenarrowpath.com | Replacement Theology, as explained by Steve Gregg, challenges the idea that Israel has been forsaken by God. Gregg engages with the work of David Hocking and examines biblical passages and notes that the early church leaders believed that Israel had been replaced by the church, which led to increased hostility towards the Jewish people. Gregg cautions against the dangerous implications of Replacement Theology and emphasizes the importance of studying the Bible to understand the role of Israel in future prophecy.

Steve I just want to add one thing and that is to be anti-semitic has nothing to do with race because there is no Semitic race for anyone to be against. Semites are a group of people that are grouped together based on languages. Therefore to be anti-Semitic you would have to be auntie a certain Semitic language. I just thought I would point out the reality that this nonsense has turned into. Even though I don't agree with you on everything I think you have done an amazing job on this and your entire dispensationalism study.

Someone who's supposed to be an avid anti dispensationalist made a video about the heresy that is replacement theology today and I couldn't help but think to myself that this person and his entire ministry is only against dispensationalism whenever it it goes against the dispensational beliefs that go against his own beliefs, usually eschatological beliefs.

There are three places where the word 'until' appears with respect to the fate of Israel: Romans 11:25 where Israel's partial blindness to Jesus continues 'until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in', which also places a time limit also on the universal availability of the Gospel to Gentiles. Luke 21:23-24, where the long Gentile domination of Jerusalem is described as something with a decreed end. Luke 13:34-35, where our Lord prophesies of His invisibility to Israel 'until' they say 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!' which envisages a future change of heart respecting Jesus on their part. In view of these prophecies what right have we to write off ethnic Israel's blessed future?

Thank you for this message. Regarding the concept of Replacement Theology there are really two distinctly separate issues:
    1) Did the new testament ekklesia replace the old testament ekklesia?
    2) Is the nation of Israel elect and restored to God at the return of the Son of man as King?
Both covenant theology and dispensationalism have elements of Biblical truth, and both have grievous error.
I believe the Father's heart is sorrowed by sons and daughters who place their faith in ~isms and ~ologies.

Thank you for the careful analysis. I will make but one point: 19:33 ff correctly points out that Heb. 8:13 says that the new covenant has made the old obsolete. However, we must compare this to Gal. 3:16-18 which says that the later covenant with Moses did not invalidate the Abrahamic covenant and that the Abrahamic was ratified by God. Therefore we must conclude that Heb. 8:13 is talking about the Mosaic Covenant not the Abrahamic Covenant, and since Romans and Galatians both hold the Abrahamic Covenant as still valid, then all of the Abrahamic Covenant is still valid, including the land promises, which are forever, and are not based on Israel's belief nor obedience. You've shifted from one covenant to the other in mid-thought. Ok, a second point: At no point was all of Israel ever faithful or obedient, so their rejection of Christ was but one in a long line of disobedience. God's promise to Abraham was not based on Israel's faith or obedience.

As every Christian agrees that God's covenant with Israel is still in effect. Especially when God says that as long as the sun comes up and the stars are out his covenant with Israel stands.
And it's absolutely true, every Christian knows that Israel is the timepiece for last days prophecies.
The fulfillment of Israel becoming a nation once again, as this pastor will talk about, and that the nations coming against Israel are being formed even as we speak, as this pastor will talk about, then we know that we are in the last days because everything else predicted both in Daniel and in revelation are coming true right now. As this pastor will agree to.
So no, absolutely none of the benefits that were specifically for Israel were transferred to the church, and a church never replaced Israel. As this pastor would agree.
Every Christian who studies knows this.

It is perplexing just how many Brethren rely on others for scriptural knowledge rather than search and rightly divide for themselves
Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? Gal. 4:16
JESUS THE SEED OF ABRAHAM. . . . and all who belong to Him.
Matthew 3:9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Matthew 21:42Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
Galatians 3:6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
Romans 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
JESUS THE TRUE TEMPLE OF GOD
John 4:21-Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
John 2:19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
21 But he spake of the temple of his body.
1 Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
    Ephesians 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

You hit the nail on the head. There are whole parts of the Bible that they explain away as spiritual and metaphorical which is a departure from sound Biblical hermeneutics . Biblically illiterate people don't know the difference. My approach to explain why the rapture is a matter of Biblical Theology and the doctrines of Christology and Soteriology. Jesus came in the flesh because that was the only way He could take our sin upon Himself on the cross...but He also took something else on Himself...God's Wrath...the WRATH we deserved for our sin. That's why the church must necessarily be removed before the Tribulation which is the WRATH of God...to say that it won't be is to undermine the person and work of Jesus Christ and cheapen the costly salvation Jesus obtained for us who believe. I always start with those references in1st John 4:1-3 and 2nd John where John talks about the importance of the Spirit that acknowledges Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. Make no mistake, the rapture question is much more than you have your opinion about it and I have mine...it's about the difference between truth and error and the error is demonic...John calls it "the spirit of antichrist in both passages in 1st and 2nd John.

I'm not dispensationalist, (which he seemed to use in the same pejorative way as he said other people use "replacement theology",) but I'm also not supercessionist. There are more nuanced ways to understand scripture, and the fact that both can be defended by scripture makes me think that *parts* of both are true. (That said, I am aware that I don't understand all the nuance of either.) I don't think supercessionists are inherently antisemitic. And I do think he spoke well, and I agree with much of what he said. But he did seem to be more focused on slamming on dispensationalists than on explaining what scripture says, and he went off on a few fallacious rabbit trails. They just believe what a pastor told them They shouldn't believe Steve Gregg just because of what he says either. At some point, they will have to deal the fact that there's no way that the rapture and Great Tribulation occur within a generation of 1948. The majority understand a generation to be 40 years in the Bible. 40 years came and went. Some said 70 years. Too late. This is the 75th year. Someone last last week claimed a generation is 80 years. When it gets passed 100, they have to give it up, right. But then they could go back to J. Vernon McGee's view that Jews have to come back to Israel in faith before all the end times mumbo jumbo takes place.

@@SteveGreggVideos In addition to refusing to examine and revise their beliefs, they also refuse to debate, even becoming aggressive. I was personally kicked out of this kind of church following Darby when I told them in 2009 that there could not possibly be two peoples of God and there was something seriously wrong here.. The worse thing is that these theories prepare people for nothing else but the acceptance of some fake messiah as the real Christ's messiah and it seems to me that this is exactly the goal. To set up a millennial kingdom , as they are convinced it should be set up literally and in that kingdom the messiah with a rod of iron will rule, only maybe that messiah , will not be the messiah.. I have been wondering lately.. it seems to me that there is a possibility, if amillennialism is correct of course, that we are in that brief period where satan is once again free to hinder and deceive the nations in the aspect of faith and rally them to battle against believers. For 150 years we have had the theory of evolution which is a direct deception and has led many into the deception that there is no God and into atheism.. we have artificial intelligence now, we have robots, we have transhumanism and genetic experimentation.. it seems to me quite likely that we are on the eve of the Great White Throne Judgment. Another important thing that intrigues me, again I say, if amillennialism is the correct eschatological concept, then it appears that the believers who are now on earth will populate eternity in incorruptible bodies, but the Bride, the woman of the lamb are those who were during the tribulation, and we are the people who believed during the millennium. That automatically seems to make us not part of the 144,000 which is a symbolic number and is actually the first fruits following the Lamb wherever He goes. Sort of like we are the subjects in eternity and they are the royal priesthood.. I'm not convinced that's the case, I'm just reasoning..

Romans 9-11 was specifically about 'my countrymen according to the flesh' (Rom 9:3-5) i.e genetic and political Israel. The whole passage is about them being temporarily hardened until the gentiles come in ie all non-Jew believers. So yes, ' All Israel will be saved' actually means the genetic-political Israel people who are currently apostate, remain the chosen but unbelieving people of God until He finally will give them a new heart and a new spirit. These are unconditional promises. Indeed there is a difference between Jews and gentiles in the purposes of God for salvation to all, is the whole thrust of this passage.

I believe in the scriptures if you study the genealogy line of the Israelites you'll find that they're people of a much darker complexion than these modern Jewish people. Now the Spirit of Prophecy speaks of strange breaking of the levitical priesthood in - Ezekiel 44: 6,7 vs 7 says that the Levites has brought into His sanctuary ( strangers ), cause only the Levitical priesthood were allowed to work the sanctuary - Numbers 18:1-(21). Now for those who don't know Satan has major influence of deceiving the nations - Ephesians 6: 12; 1John 2:15-17; John 14:30; Matthew 4: 8,9 these scripture's show clearly that politics are heavily influenced by demonic cultivation of the anti-christ who will come at his time and the idea that Theodor Herzl established in 1897 the Zionist Organization an also in America hasn't brought forth the fruitation of the land of Jerusalem which Jerusalem means the City of Peace which it isn't - Luke 21:(24) the Lord is the Master and all those against Him are like dead branches prepared for the 🔥.

This was a great presentation of the authentic Christian teaching on true Israel. My only contention is this: I would argue that Judaism is in fact worse than other false religions. Specifically for the fact that they not only deny Christ, but actively blaspheme Him in their so called “holy” books. In addition, I’ve never seen a church send money to a foreign country in order to help propagate a false religion. Imagine if a church sent money to any Middle East country to help build a mosque. The congregation, and the church at large, would rightfully cry “apostasy!” Yet we have innumerable churches in this country sending money to Israel every day to not only bolster their military infrastructure (which is often employed to persecute and even kill Christians), but to also fund the rebuilding of the third temple which will be a den of blasphemy housing the spirit of antichrist. The union between certain sects of Orthodox Judaism (Chabad specifically) and modern day evangelicalism is just about as insidious as it gets. In my opinion (just an opinion), this is at least the precursor to the great apostasy, if not the actual apostasy itself. Great video, pastor. Keep speaking the truth.

Technically, Jew refers to anyone Israelite the lived in the land of Judah, not necessarily whether they were actually part of the tribe. Benjamites and Levites were also referred to as Jews. Also, Revelation 2:9-3:9 aren’t referring to caananites posing as Jews. It’s a reference to what Paul says earlier in Romans and what John and Jesus make reference to in the gospels: God can raise up Israelites out of stones. One is not a Jew outwardly, but inwardly. People claiming to be Jews and yet rejecting Jesus are not Jews at all, but children of Satan.

So they slander those who believe by calling them "replacement theology". When in reality what they are saying is that they do not believe in the new covenant. They replace Jesus. . Who is really teaching “Replacement Theology” ?
(Did God fulfill His promises to the Jewish people at Calvary? Matthew 26:28, John 19:30)
The advocates of modern Dispensational Theology often accuse others of promoting “Replacement Theology”, or some may even say “Antisemitism”. What does the Bible say about their accusations?
    1. Who is replacing Christ as the seed of Abraham through which all the families of the Earth would be blessed in Genesis 12:3, with Abraham’s modern descendants? (See Paul’s interpretation in Galatians 3:8, 3:16.)
    2. Who is replacing the one people of God in John 10:16, with two peoples of God ?
    3. Who is replacing the one seed (Christ) in Galatians 3:16, with the many seeds?
    4. Who is replacing the children of the promise in Romans 9:8, with the children of the flesh?
    5. Who is replacing the faithful “remnant” of Israelites in Romans 11:1-5, with the Baal worshipers?
    6. Who is replacing the word "so" in Romans 11:26, with the word "then"?
    7. Who is attempting to replace the Church made up of all races of people, with one made up only of Gentiles? Why did Peter address the crowd as “all the house of Israel” in Acts 2:36, when about 3,000 Israelites accepted Christ on the Day of Pentecost?
    8. Based on Hebrews 9:15, the New Covenant cannot be separated from the Messiah’s death. Is the covenant in Daniel 9:27 connected to the Messiah’s death in Daniel 9:26. Is the covenant with the “many” in Daniel 9:27 the same covenant with the “many” in Matthew 26:28? If it is, some have replaced the New Covenant in Daniel 9:27 with a future covenant made by an antichrist not found in Daniel chapter 9. (See the 1599 Geneva Bible used by the Pilgrims.)
    9. Those promoting the Two Peoples of God doctrine of Dispensational Theology often accuse others of teaching “Replacement Theology”, but are they the masters of it? Are they promoting a form of Dual Covenant Theology based on race? (See “genealogies” in Titus 3:9) Is the most important genealogy in the Bible found in Matthew 1:1? Is God's Son the ultimate fulfillment of Israel? Why has the modern Church done a pitiful job of sharing the Gospel with modern Orthodox Jews? Why would someone tell them they are God's chosen people and then fail to share the Gospel with them? Who is the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 3:15? Who is the "son" in Psalm 2? Who is the "suffering servant" of Isaiah 53? Who would fulfill the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34? Who would fulfill the timeline of Daniel chapter 9 before the second temple was destroyed? Why have we not heard this simple Old Testament Gospel preached on Christian television in the United States on a regular basis?
    10. Watch the CZcams video “Genesis of Dispensational Theology” to see the origin of this man-made doctrine, which is less than 200 years old. It was brought to the United States about the time of the Civil War by John Nelson Darby. The doctrine was later incorporated into the notes of the Scofield Reference Bible, and then spread through much of the modern Church.
Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas Texas was created in part to promote John Darby’s Two Peoples of God doctrine of Dispensational Theology.
Lewis Sperry Chafer, the first president of Dallas Theological, had the following to say about the difference between Israel and the Church:

“The dispensationalist believes that throughout the ages God is pursuing two distinct purposes: one related to the earth with earthly people and earthly objectives involved which is Judaism; while the other is related to heaven with heavenly people and heavenly objectives involved, which is Christianity.”
Lewis Sperry Chafer, Dispensationalism (Dallas, Seminary Press, 1936), p. 107.
Chafer states that, ‘Israel is an eternal nation, heir to an eternal land, with an eternal kingdom, on which David rules from an eternal throne,’ that is, on earth and distinct from the church who will be in heaven.”
Lewis Sperry Chafer. Systematic Theology. 1975. Vol. IV. pp. 315-323.
John Walvoord, another prominent voice of Dallas Theological stated…
"...it is an article of normative dispensational belief that the boundaries of the land promised to Abraham and his descendants from the Nile to the Euphrates will be literally instituted and that Jesus Christ will return to a literal and theocratic Jewish kingdom centred on a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. In such a scheme the Church on earth is relegated to the status of a parenthesis.”
    John F. Walvoord, The Rapture Question.1979, p. 25
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are there two peoples of God in John 10:16? (See also 1 John 2:22-23, 2 John 1:7-11.)
What is the land promise to the Old Testament Saints in Hebrews 11:15-16?
(See what Joshua said about the Old Covenant land promise in Josh. 21:43.)
Based on 2 Peter 3:10-13, is this earth “eternal”? Will it be replaced by a new earth?
Based on Acts 2:36, and Romans 9:6-8, and Romans 11:1-5, and Hebrews 12:22-24, and James 1:1-3, can faithful Israel and the Church be separated into two different groups?
Who is the New Covenant promised to in Jeremiah 31:31-34, and is it fulfilled by the blood of Christ at Calvary in Hebrews 8:6-13, and Hebrews 12:18-24?
Will modern Orthodox Jews ever be saved outside of the New Covenant Church, if the New Covenant is “everlasting” in Hebrews 13:20? (See also 2 Thess. 1:7-10) If the New Covenant has made the Old Covenant “obsolete” in Hebrews 8:6-13, why would God go back to the Old Covenant system during a future time period?

"Replacement Theology"? This totally unnecessary term has arisen from a false premise: "The Jew is [all of] Israel." No one has been "replaced." Christians need to fully understand: The Jews represent the biblical house of Judah. NOT the ten tribes of Israel. That distinction still belongs to the descendants of the ten tribes. Well; you ask--"Aren't all of the twelve tribes Jews?" Answer: An emphatic "No." Nowhere does the Bible teach that false notion. Jacob had twelve sons. Judah's fourth son became the progenitor/father of the tribe of Judah. People born into this tribe were Judahites; or Yehudis. This was shortened to "Jews" post-Babylon. We could shorten the name of one of the ten tribes: The prefix "Dan" denoted the progenitor Dan; the suffix "Ite" rounded out the tribal name. We will call them the "Danites." Okay then....Were all twelve tribes "Dans"? Of course not. Whether one was a Simeonite/Reubenite/Asherite/Ephraimite....One was non-Judahite. Therefore; biblically, and logically; no child born into any of the ten tribes was a Judahite/Jew. Israelite? Yes. Hebrew? Yes. Jew? No. This is in full accordance w/ the Bible. God never referred to the ten tribes of Israel as Jews. The modern notion that God has "done away" with the descendants of the non-Judahite tribes is an egregious; shocking error.
Post exile; God promised the divorced ten tribes that he would GREATLY multiply them. Read Hosea 1: 1-10a. This chapter is about the ten tribes; not Judah. The ten--in exile--would become "no mercy; not my people." Note that this had nothing to do with a future "spiritual Israel." Paul and Peter quoted these passages from Hosea--Referring to the reconciled descendants of the "not my people/no mercy" ten tribes. It had nothing whatsoever to do with with a future "spiritual Israel." Claiming otherwise is a violation of scripture. There is zero biblical justification for this modern notion. God had no plans to permanently do away with the house of Israel/Isaac/Ephraim. All three names belonged to the ten tribes. Read the entire Old Testament--And see the crystal clear distinction between the house of Israel, and the much smaller house of Judah. Two houses: Different prophecies/histories/politics.
ALL of the tribes are active on the earth today. Jacob blessed all twelve sons, and prophesied how the tribal descendants of each one would be characterized in the "last days." (Last days--Genesis 49:1, KJV, and others.) Joseph's two (non-Judahite) sons inherited the birthright promises. Judah inherited the royal crown and scepter. "The birthright belonged to [non-Judahite] Joseph" (1 Chronicles 5:2). Incidentally; NO ONE is "stealing promises" from the Jews. They never belonged to them, and in accordance with scripture; they are not being fulfilled in them. God promised Abraham; unconditionally; that he would be the father of "many nations." Many nations; not one. It shouldn't need to be said; but: These were physical descendants. Literally "sperma"/"seed"; not the father of "many churches."
"Replacement Theology" is specious, and unnecessary. God IS active within the multitudinous; latter day descendants of the ten tribes of Israel. Israel--Not Judah. Different family; different end-time prophecies. But; "What about the 1948 Israeli nation?" Well; Read Zephaniah 2. God leads a "remnant of Judah" (not Israel) back into the land of their forefather Judah. When? "Before the great day of the Lord's anger." Most scholars concede that the remnant came back between 1917-1948. The great day of the Lord's anger" is appearing on the horizon.
Key to our understanding: Joseph's two sons (Ephraim and Manasseh) were each given a special prophetic promise; also for the latter days. One must read all of Genesis, Chapters 48, and 49; for a fuller context. Ephraim's multitudinous; non-Judahite (Jewish) descendants would form a "Great Nation, and Company (commonwealth) of Nations." His brother Manasseh would form a single nation, and his descendants would also be a "great people." The comprehensive; national birthright promises included great wealth/powerful militaries/navies/choice countries/treasures beneath the sea/treasures beneath the hills (minerals; oil. etc.) They would be God's "servant people," and his "battle axe." (Akin to a 'police force.') These people would be a means of tangible/spiritual blessings to the less developed nations of the world. They would--as God's servant people--Be a missionary people. They would "sing God's praises." As a related group; there is only one powerful single nation, and the brother "Nation, and Company of Nations" that (outwardly; not invisibly) possess the birthright promises
Replacement Theology? The latter-day; multiple; physical descendants of the exiled ten tribes of the house of Israel are thriving. Their nations are related; united under a common umbrella. They are the most highly blessed/advanced nations on earth. No other nations can compare. Not by a country mile. There is no "spiritual Israel." It's an invention; totally ignoring the clear teachings of the Old Testament; especially the national blessing of Joseph's sons, and the clear distinction between the non-Judahite/Jewish ten tribes, and the house of Judah. The multitudinous; latter day house of Israel exists today-- in accordance with God's promises. After many centuries of migrations; they underwent several name changes. They were "excommunicated" from the Old Covenant--Because of their incorrigible idolatry. Unlike Judah; they became "like the gentiles." God purged the dross out of them, and calls them back to himself....Through the New Covenant. "Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah" (Jeremiah 31:31, KJV). Note: Salvation belongs to all who will receive it; not just God's two houses of sheep. Also; "You must be born again" is intertwined with John 3:16.
No one has "replaced" Israel. God's Israel descendants--NOT to be confused with Judah. The Jews are few in number; formed a tiny; recent nation, and do not have the birthright. Nor are they doing the work of God's servant; unlike the Gospel minded; Good-News-proclaiming descendants of the ten non-Judahite tribes. These multitudinous people are the [lost] "other fold of sheep" Jesus came to seek. *Strong's Concordance*/dictionary for the word "lost" in this context means exiled/dispersed. Moreover; ONLY the two houses/(all of the tribes) were known as God's sheep. He never referred to any other nation/people group as his sheep. It is an Israelite term; not applicable to the people of any other nations. Again; read through the Old Testament. Prove it for yourself.

The Israelites comprised 12 Tribes. Not all Israelites are "Jews" and not all "Jews" are Israelites - study the Bible and study history. The Tribe of Judah are not all of Israel and few "Jews" today are even Israelites, but are descendants of proselytes, including Canaanite proselytes !
      See Revelations 2:9 & 3:9
Yahweh's unconditional promises to the "Lost Tribes of Israel" still apply - they have and are still being fulfilled in their descendants up to today and in the future !

Even though they have rejected Jesus Christ they are still Jews, they are still Israel.
You err by not knowing the scriptures. 1 Corinthians 10:32 Give no offence either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God.
Ergo there are 3 groups of people in God's eyes. So the Jews will always be with us, like the poor will always be with us.
