  • God made man, Sam Colt made him equal! If you own a firearm, it is your responsibility to learn proper gun handling techniques and safety. Teach your family how to shoot to become familiar , confident and not just curious. To have a gun for self protection but lose a family member because of neglect is a real tragedy.

It feels quite good watching these family moments outdoor and teaching your children important things. I never had that, and I know a lot of others who didn't as well. You come off as a very good man.

A few suggestions for teaching kids/new shooters. 1) practice procedures of checking safe, administrative load & unload, charging, and shooting a few days ahead of time, in a quiet place. Repeat (small chunks better than 1 long lesson) until they have it internalized. 2) First time with live fire, give them 1 cartridge to start. If they get excited, scared, whatever, at least they can't let a 2nd unsafe shot fly. 3) Once they have that down, move up in complexity. Hope it helps, stay safe.

The biggest tip I give to other about introducing kids to firearms, other than basic safety, is to shoot reactive targets. Paper targets can be very boring even for us adults. Allowing kids to plink cans adds a whole new level of fun to the experience. When they see that can spin thru the air, you'll see a grin every time.

Excellent advice. I took the hunters safety course to be able to hunt, and would suggest everyone take that, even if they aren't going to hunt. It's great for youngsters too. They drill muzzle control into you.
Well said. That is the most important. Enjoyed the whole video. Take time and teach... excellent. Kids are so curious. Take time and use repetition with instructing.
    What an adorable boy.

Great video. Outstanding safety points! You covered the most crucial points very professionally and very thoroughly.
Great quote too, one of my favorites.
Al Capone said "you'll find you get further with a smile, a kind word and a gun, than just a smile and a kind word."
Not the friendliest of expressions, but accurate.

Once the P22 was out of ammo when little sootch was shooting it you will notice him anticipate the shot, dropping the muzzle when he attempted to fire. This needs to be corrected. Try doing some drills with dummy rounds loaded in the mag. It makes it very evident that you're anticipating the shot.
Great video, and I'm glad to see you out there teaching your boy.

I taught my son to shoot using a 22 rifle and a watermellon. I wanted him to graphically see what happens when a bullet strikes a human body, and that it is no toy. Later, he went on to become a marksman rifleman in the Marine Corps. 5 stars on the vid.

I don't have a gun and maybe I'll never own one. Still, I've been teaching my oldest son gun safety using his water pistol and toy revolver. I also make him teach these rules to everybody he plays with if they play with gun-like toys. The results are already showing. Sometimes I need to remind him but most of the time he gets it right :)

My friend actually did a backward unload. He cleared the chamber and then dropped the magazine. Doing a backward unload leaves a round in the chamber. The only thing he did right was keeping it pointed in the safest direction. He went to dry fire the gun and BOOM. He shot a round threw the floor of his single storey house. Down isnt always the safest direction. In this case it was. There was 6 people in the house at the time. No one was hurt because the gun was pointed in the safest direction.

But the mental ablity to tell the difference between right and wrong is something comes with age. if one choose to show his/her kid please please know what you are getting your self into...... and yes i would tell my kids to protect your life use the weapon. This must be a difficult decision either way.

Good video, although even with the action/slide open- looking down the barrels not a good practice; the only time this may be done is when the firearm is disassembled for cleaning. Otherwise I like to see fathers spending quality time with their children.

(Read below) After my friend accidentally shot a hloe threw the floor. Realising everyone was safe, his dad asked did u shot the hole in the right spot so i can run a cable? They had a laugh but this is not a laughing matter. Keeping guns pointed in the safest possibe direction at all times is a life saver. Even if the gun is empty always keep it pointed in the safest possible direction. ALWAYS practice safe habits. Shoot safe, often and teach the kids.

This video is an excellent example of a child too young to be shooting, and what happens when they do. Muzzle direction chaos. Basically a kid under 15yrs old, in my opinion cannot possibly adhere to muzzle discipline. All it would take is a bee sting, or just the need to scratch an itch, and that gun will be pointed in all kinds of wild directions and at people. The guy standing behind the kid offers little safety, because these things happen in a fraction of a second. You see the kid point the muzzle directly up for a fraction of a second, etc. At this young age they just don't have the maturity to understand OR perform muzzle discipline.

    • @clayjameson6614
      @clayjameson6614 Před 9 lety +2

James Coffman I just watched parts of this vid again to refresh my memory. This kid was too tired to be shooting, and could barely pull the trigger. There's no way that's safe. One slip or muzzle direction screw-up and somebody could have died in a millisecond.
In one segment the father even asks the kid why he can't hold the gun up, and asks the kid if he's tired, and ignores the "yes" answer, and goes on. WTF. This ain't basic training.
