Quotation from Alan Walker's Liszt biography, related to Grieg's piano concerto an sight-reading: " Grieg’s second meeting with Liszt occurred a few weeks later, in early April (1870). This was a yet more memorable encounter because Grieg brought with him the manuscript of his unpublished Piano Concerto in A minor, which he had just retrieved from his Leipzig publishers. A number of other musicians were present, including Sgambati and the Danish composer August Winding. Liszt asked Grieg to play the concerto, but the young man declined, for he had not yet been able to practise it. Liszt then took the manuscript to the piano and read the concerto at sight, making commentaries to the audience as he went along. When he began, he took the first movement too quickly. But after Grieg had corrected him, Liszt went on in fine style and played the difficult Cadenza best of all. Again, it was the Chickering grand that helped to enshrine this moment in musical history. “In conclusion,” wrote Grieg, “he handed me the manuscript and said in a peculiarly cordial tone: ‘Keep right on; I tell you that you have the ability to succeed. Do not let yourself be deterred.’ ” 48 Grieg treasured the remembrance of that hour and often recalled it in times of adversity."

@@frankherrgott He also sight read Brahms scherzo at tempo from the manuscript because Brahms was too intimidated to play in front of Liszt.
When you see the handwriting of composers, it's incredible if you can even understand on which line the note is placed.
François-René Duchable is a living proof that sight reading difficult pieces at tempo is very real.

WOW!!! that is such a great series of videos with the great François-René Duchâble himself! yes, I know of him very well. A strong sense of enthusiasm comes across -- 2 artists bonding in this special way, and his sight reading of your prelude make him an alien from another planet. How is this even humanly possible? It is almost frightening he is so good! I am glad you had this special opportunity, and that he appreciated both you and your music. Great chemistry captured on video makes these videos particularly valuable. Well done for the initiative.
