  • In this video, John teaches you exactly how he set up a home karaoke system for us. He'll go over all the parts you need, song selection, hooking it up to your computer.
    Speaker: Rockville RPG12 12" Powered Active 800 Watt (amzn.to/2N9BpIO)
    Mixer: Alesis MULTIMIX4USBFX 4-Channel Mixer (amzn.to/2WIDpuL)
    Fifine UHF Dual Channel Wireless Handheld Microphone (amzn.to/2C6q85O)
    You'll also likely need (you can buy these online, or at an electronic store):
    An HDMI cable (connecting your laptop/device to a TV) (amzn.to/2NdztiL)
    A 3.5mm to 1/4 inch adapter, and a 1/4 inch male-to-male audio cable (to connect your laptop's audio output into the mixer) (amzn.to/2WEENP3 and amzn.to/2PG1AZg)
    A 1/4 inch to XLR cable (amzn.to/2PG1LDU) to connect the mixer to the speaker. I used two in the video (for "left" and "right" channel sound) but, given I only have one speaker, this is a little redundant.

    Very enjoyable video. I got a kick out of the family pets too!
    I just ran a karaoke set up on Saturday for a friend's retirement party and used Karafun 2 software. As long as they offer the short term subscription, I will never again use the old CDG discs that I've had since the 1990's. It just so much easier and you have access to over 30,000 songs for only $6 for a 2-day subscription. Since I was at a remote location with no internet access other than tethering my computer to my phone's hotspot, I downloaded about 1000 songs to my laptop prior to the party. Each song is about 5 meg, so it took awhile to do this on my home network. Glad I did, because the 8 to 10 songs I downloaded at the party using my phone's data connection took about 1 minute each. Not bad, but it does delay things a bit.
    I did have trouble balancing the music and the singers. This is partly due to the fact I had never used the software and the piecemeal equipment set up I was using. For example, my mixer had an overall volume and each microphone had its own. To bring up the music I had to simultaneously lower the mic inputs to minimize feedback. I had two types of input; a portable karaoke system that John mentions in the video (for background music) and my laptop. Each input had different output levels going to the mixer, which meant I had to constantly adjust volume levels as I switched back and forth between the two.
    The issue was the singers who had vastly different experience using microphones or doing karaoke. Singing either too far or too close to the mic, moving it around that occasionally brought feedback into the mix, etc. We did have someone who was a real singer, and she sounded very good once I dialed her mic into the music. Holding the mic properly, pulling it further away when she hit some high notes, and minmizing random movements are all good habits.
    My next step is trying to integrate the microphones into the computer for a more unified control of the mix. Would be nice to be able to control the mic levels and effects from the same device providing the music & lyrics.

    Thanks for the video mate, it was very helpful. I just didn't understand if it gives you the score with this setup? I don't see the microphone being fed back to the PC so the karaoke app could analyse how good/bad you are.

    Thanks for the video! I purchased the same setup an noticed you don’t get hardly any of the bass/low notes on mic one or two, even with the low knobs all the way up. Looks like the EXT IN, (1/8” stereo Jack), is the best way to add true audio in. Probably wouldn’t need the 1/4” stereo cable and the 1/8” adapter for your computer, since the microphones come with a 1/8” male to male stereo Jack. Don’t really know for sure if this is the right way, but any input /advice would be appreciated. Thanks again!

    Nice video. Hope you don’t mind me posting here how I setup my karaoke system. Mine is almost totally wireless with a couple of provisos. A smart TV ( Vizio )with Bluetooth and a PA system ( Absolute ) with bluetooth, 2000 watts, came with 2 wireless mics, rechargeable battery, and has echo, bass and treble functions. I pair the TV and PA so all sounds come from TV to the PA ( no lag at all ) then with my phone go to CZcams, search for any karaoke videos and cast ( mirror ) it to my TV. If the PA’s battery is fully charged I don’t even need it plugged into a wall outlet, runs for like 4-5 hours full blast. If everyone in the room is connected to the same wifi they can pick a song in CZcams in their own phones, and it will automatically queue up so your guest doesn’t have to bug you and you don’t have to ask each and everyone their request. Heck you don’t even need a TV at all. Last 4th of July we took the PA to Second Beach near Forks Wa. Paired it with my IPad and everyone there friends and strangers had a hell of a good time. I got the PA at Fry’s Electronics for $199 on sale and if your smart TV doesn’t have Bluetooth, you can get a Bluetooth receiver/transmitter in Amazon for $20 and if you don’t have a smart TV you can get a Chromecast or something similar.

      @@stephanieknecht9914 I kinda detailed most of it from my post above as to what TV and speaker you need. i don't know where you're from but i got the TV at Bestbuy and the PA speaker at Fry's electronics, just make sure the PA speaker has bluetooth, echo,treble and bass functions, has a built in battery so you don't need an external power source. the PA i got ( brand name is Absolute ) came with 2 wireless mics not the best quality but very good enough for casual get together. also depends on how loud you want it. mine has 2000 watts and that can get really loud. do not get a PA speaker with less than 500 watts ( The DIY couple's PA speaker is actually a very brand ) Fry's has a lot of selection some of them come with like dancing lights and sound effects. sorry i don't have a channel.

    In regard to those who mention recording performers 'real-time': This, in my opinion and through trial and error, is NOT as simple as some might think it is. It had been simple enough at one time, but since Windows 10 this all changed for me and I watched as it happened and began to fail. Ans so, a couple of points from someone (which, of course is myself) who struggled at the exact same point every time and where setting up used to be the simplest part but no longer is in regard to using an Windows 10 itself to record the exact same sounds of music, vocals and even video recording at the same time, in real time through a PC / Laptop:
    I really cannot solve how best to do recording in real-time any more using a PC. Recording video (using an attached webcam) music and vocals is no longer a breeze. I never even used a mixing deck, but instead an external sound-card which I used with earlier PC's I'd built myself and had the absolute minimum of fuss without a nest of cabling. It really used to be that simple. A simple USB cable from external sound-card linked to the PC, a mic attached to the external sound-card and there was nothing more needed. Back then it was called 'What You Hear Is What You Get' and it was a simple click on a radar button to set the entire thing up, Windows itseld configured WYHIWYG but I have yet to find out what was replaced for this simple WYHIWYG system as it was some years ago. It's a question / problem I have scoured the Internet with that, it seems, no-one appears to have the answer.
    Regardless of how I try to set my sound-card (either internal and external) which appears should be a simple task I cannot get this to work ‘Karaoke-style’ and I have over 50 Karaoke tracks of me singing with video using only an external sound-card. The closest I did get (after Windows 10) was with so much latency that it was totally impossible to sing in 'real-time' WITH video both recording at the same time.
    I truly don't think anyone has a solution in using a simple external sound-card; I've tried everything, nothing works. If someone says they have a solution I'd be more than happy to hear it :-)

      Wow. So useful and clear info. QUESTION if your TV has a soundbar and a couple of rear speakers in a small room, do we need another $peaker❓

      @@ethelgarland Hi Steve. Imagine, if you will, yourself singing for pleasure. The only difference is that you are singing Karaoke but with no audience because that's all some people are looking for. In essence, Going back more than 10 years ago I could either hear music through my speakers whilst using a mic ... or ... I could use headphones which meant only I heard the music coming FROM my PC whilst I sang into the mic: It meant that only sound heard would be my vocals going INTO my PC and nothing else. Back then I used (for free) Windows Sound Recorder to record both music and vocals. It was that easy; basic, simple and needed only either a Laptop or PC. So simple.
      In the same way, a good, mid-range soundbar would be enough to fill more than a small room and you really need nothing else. The only issue you have then is getting a mic INTO the TV so both music and vocals are heard. There are many ways to do this that I've seen. What appears to be the simplest solution being attaching a sound mixer to your TV using AV leads (I think most TV's no longer have AV In and Out leads although I might be corrected here. HDMI link IN to TV with AV links to a sound mixer seems a good idea. But in either case, it's way to much fuss for what I need it for.
      I'm not sure I really answered your question here ... in which case I'm sorry in not being helpful

      Female DJ Frizzie , i connect my iPad or I phone to my TV to watch CZcams.
      1- you need to have an “Apple TV”. It costs about $120. Connect the the Apple TV to the TV by wire (HIMD)
      2- Then you turn on “Screen Mirroring” from your IPad. Whatever on your IPad or Iphone will be shown on the TV. Make sure your IPad and your the Apple TV connected to the same WiFii.

      @@thatdiycouple5513 I have a Smart TV with a separate AV receiver with passive speakers. I was thinking of how to rig up a karaoke system when I saw your yt video. I was thinking of using chromecast to get the karaoke AV to the TV, then convert the audio out using a toslink to RCA converter and pipe that output into the input of Fifine wireless Microphone Mixer that you have and then take the RCA output of that and input it to the RCA CD/DVD input of the AV receiver. Thats why I was wondering why would i need the Alesis mixer. I am also wondering if I would get any sound delay.

    • @bellagio88
      @bellagio88 Před 5 lety +1

      @@thatdiycouple5513 I just got the Fifine today and hooked it up. Was kinda of tricky because the Smart TV was controlling the A/V so had to switch off the auto syncing so that the A/V would read the composite input instead of HDMI ARC. The TV stereo audio output plugged into Fifine then from there to input of A/V amp using CD input. The Fifine controls the TV input music volume with the music knob but I also can control it remotely from the TV volume. Mic volume on the Fifine was good enough for both mics and the A/V amp took both mixtures and wow , everything worked. I left the microphone audio at 50%. All the necessary cables worked out too. I didn't have to get a Toslink converter , I used the TV's earphone jack and the stereo to RCA cable that was supplied. Not sure the Fifine is worth $$$ bucks, but it works.

      Bellagio - Appreciate if you could do a video about your setup. I am setting up a similar Karaoke with LG 4k TV and yamaha rx-579 receiver. I have ordered my mixer and will use Fifine K025 wireless microphone. My LG tv has only one optical audio out. That is another challenge to figure out the connections. Kindly do a video. It will help many. Thanks!!!

    • @bellagio88
      @bellagio88 Před 5 lety

      @@PrakshGo Just get a toslink to RCA adaptor on amazon. Make sure its has SPDIF optical and not just SPDIF coaxial. The TV optical goes into the converter and the RCA output goes to the input of your mixer. Then add the K025 to your mixer and the output of the mixer to one of your composite inputs of your rx 579. I don't know how smart your TV is to know if you want sound output to go to optical (sometimes called PCM) or to your HDMI ARC (if your using that) , you might have to switch it manually. I didn't use my optical output, my Sony has a earphone output so I used the cable Fifine came with so didn't have to use an adapter. What mixer did you get ?

    i think you overbought stuffs boss, im a dj and im going to be getting my first karaoke gig in july (goodluck to me lol), but im thinking just to connect two wired microphones to the active speaker and use an aux wire from my laptop to the same active speaker while hdmi split the visuals to a TV. Cos my speaker and most speakers does have mic and line out control separate, only thing is i wont be able to add the reverb which to me is fine, and if i must i can just make the connections tru my NS7ii dj set. i think thats it. dont u think thats just simpler and cheaper if i might add lol.

    • @path9mm
      @path9mm Před 5 lety

      He didn't necessarily overbuy. I use a separate Yamaha mixer that I paid $200 for at Guitar Center, and then use laptop connected to mixer and mixer connected to the powered speakers and HDMI from laptop to TV. With the mixer I get better sound and more inputs. Sometimes we connect 4 mics at once for background vocals or duets and just having fun. I have more effects and overall better control over the sound with the mixer. Also, my wife's mic requires Phantom Power so I needed a mixer with +48v Phantom. I can also connect my laptop via USB which provides 24-bit/192kHz.
      I guess it depends on how serious you are into Karyoke. My wife and her sisters are all singers so they tend to enjoy a really good setup for Karyoke. If you want an okay system then by all means get a set of affordable powered PA speakers with built in mixer or an all in one system with powered mixer, but for those that want a higher quality sound and/or more power I recommend spending a little extra on speakers and a separate mixer.
