Generally, Shonen Manga is action oriented and frequently comes with supernatural powers; such as the Devil Fruit of One Piece, Ki or Energy of Dragon Ball, and Ninjutsu of Naruto. Therefore many of the most popular manga and anime in the world are focused on characters that fight their way to achieving their dream. Vinland Saga, by contrast, focuses on Thorfinn. A man without any special powers who realizes the error in using his fists to resolve his problems. Vinland Saga is based in Viking controlled England and Denmark during a very turbulent time in history where kings Sweyn and Canute are trying to unify the nations under one power. People who complain about thorfinn not being a murderous person in the second season are just missing the entire point.

I have a buddy that I had a debate with he said that exact thing and called the second season boring when I said it was the best character development in anime I’ve seen but guess it’s the same debate of two sides of a coin see opposite sides of the world
Shounen-bros at their finest, they just watch for the colors and the action.
Awesome detail I picked up in the Thors vs Askeladd duel.
At the start of the duel, Askeladd says (and I'm paraphrasing here) : "I swear on the name of my father Olaf that I will respect the rules of this duel"
We know in hindsight that he did not intend to follow through on that.
But then at the end, when he agrees to let the other people go, after witnessing Thors's true character he says: "I swear on my ancestor Aurelius that I will let them leave".
And there he was truthful.
Such an early giveaway of Askeladd's true heritage and his feelings towards each side. He would swear on his father's name knowing that he does not intend to keep that promise, in a way spitting on the name of his father, but he will always be truthful and honorable when invoking the name of Aurelius and his roman heritage.
And there are so many details like that sprinkled in the early chapters that it's beautiful to go back to.
Yeah it's a really cool detail! I had something about it in my script at one point but I ended up cutting it
And I wonder if Askeladd took on the duel in the first place not for the money, but to see if Thors was worthy of leading his band and becoming the Artorius he's looking for. He did ask Thors to lead his band after seeing what kind of man he was.

Despite how sensationalized it is, Vinland Saga is actually one of the more accurate takes on Vikings in modern media. It helps that Makoto Yukimura actually visited Iceland on a trip for research before starting the manga.
The concept of the "true warrior" is explained by Leif Erikson when he's telling stories of his adventure to Vinland to kid Thorfinn and the other Icelander kids.
According to Leif not all warriors fight with weapons on the battlefield.
Leif for example is a warrior who "fights" the sea. The kids of course
just think Leif is a "coward" who is afraid of war and even kid Thorfinn
who normally loves listening to Leif's stories of adventure looks at Leif with doubt.
There is however a character who does respect Leif and that is of course Thors.
While the kids may see Leif as a goofball Thors knows Leif is the real deal.
It is highly likely that Leif was the one who taught the true warrior philosophy to Thors.
Vinland Saga is essentially Thorfinn slowly realizing just how wrong he was as a kid.
True, Thors lived in a society of men who were in many ways higher than him.
This is exemplified by the fact he’s a pretty bad blacksmith despite being in Iceland for years. He respects the hell out of people who are able to make things. Because deep down he hates that the only thing he’s good at is destruction. (And being a kickass rower)
Despite being very basic logic, there's a hint of truth to what the kids are saying. People who choose not to fight ARE sometimes cowards. Without any real fighting experience and deep truths gained by having experienced actual fighting, you don't really know what you're dealing with. There's a reason Leif turned to Thorfinn to deal with the natives of Vinland, Leif realized Thorfinn was a lot braver than him and knew battle all too well, well enough to actually be prepared to deal with the conflict and broker peace with them in a way he knew he couldn't.
Real strength is knowing how to battle, being powerful enough to deal with your adversaries, but choosing not to use that power. If you do not have that strength, you will inevitably be overcome with fear when a conflict situation ensues, blinding you to finding alternative solutions. It's the same concept used in so many martial arts. Students are taught how to fight not to actually use those abilities (unless the situation leaves you no other choice), but to be able to deal with the situations peacefully while having the upper hand.

@@wildfire9280 They're not mutually exclusive. It's certainly intelligent to avoid a fight if you don't know how to fight, but the motivation behind that action in that scenario is cowardice.
Miyamoto Musashi also talks about a similar concept in the book of five rings, the same idea shown in Vagabond
While I do understand why a lot of people are turned off by season 2, I personally think it’s even better than the first season so far. I really do appreciate the message that Makoto Yukimura was trying to convey in the slave arc. One of my favorite arcs in Anime/Manga
I feel the same way. I wasn't that into Vinland Saga during the prologue, but the farm arc turned it into one of my favorite series
I fully agree. While I loved Askeladd and all of the supporting cast of season 1, watching the little demon child grow into a compelling and sympathetic character was fantastic.

Dude it was a big struggle to watch at first cause the entire asthetic and poor jokes but the video is awesome and I have to finish
Gigantism, the condition thorkell suffers/benefits from can cause accute arrythmia and pressure loss in certain vascular systems that his organs because of their size are not designed to handle. This can cause blunt force trauma and especially concussions to be quite common. Thorfinn spun Thorkell's head so fast that the bruising and swinging of the brain but also momentary pressure and flow disruption made more accute by his condition rendered him unconscious
its simple, lots of people preach "no violence" but never experience real war, violence.

I like that adult Thorfinn clearly doesn't forgive Askeladd for killing his father or mistreating him yet also very clearly still cares for him and has learned a lot from him. It's a very layered relationship that isn't simply one thing or the other and is one of my favorite parts of the show

Canute's entire journey is really similar to one of my favourite writings in the Bible. Ecclesiastes, a book on a great philosopher and king who realised the futility of all that he'd gained as a king and the true value in living. It's really interesting how the story of Vinland Saga looks on concepts I'd never thought I'd ever see in Japanese manga. Oddly enough I'd read Vinland Saga at a time in my life when I really needed the right push to not make major mistakes. It's really touching. Your look into Vinland Saga was amazing man. Hopefully I get to see your videos as the go on further. Take your time with what you do man. We all, or at least some, really do appreciate the quality of these.

I might not be a Christian but I do agree with the parts about living in peace, being wholesome and the like, Jesus seems like a great guy. Still though I do not agree with everything (partially because I see it as mythology, partially because some of it I see as morally wrong) and it is sad to see so many twist media/texts such as the Bible to suit their needs to spread hate and violence (a prime example being the westbero baptist church)
Vinland Saga is actually one of the best Christian theology inspired works I've seen. It's subtle and not on the nose, but it's quite obvious that the author has written that theme throughout the core of his work. It's almost like the author parallels the difficulties of being a better person in a broken world to the difficulties of living up to the glory of God that all men fail to do. That truth that no man is capable of living as Christ destroyed Canute's worldview and also shaped Thorfinn's indirectly. Where one man became hopeless because he realised paradise on Earth is impossible the other man realised that even if it may be impossible we must still strive to be better and hold paradise in the hearts of mankind. I think that's why meeting Thorfinn brought Canute back to a better path. He saw that even in a world without paradise, a single man can still strive to do what little he can to at least try to make peace a reality. I expect Vinland Saga to have a tragic ending, but I also believe it will have an ending that shows Thorfinn in a state of peace after realising the "Vinland" his father told him about lies with the soul of man and not the material world.

It's cool how philosophically this is very connected to Attack on Titan. Where Attack on Titan focuses on the cycle of hate, and Vinland focuses on breaking hate and the ropes that bind you to it.
AOT and Vinland Saga are about solving the same problem, the difference between them however is that the "heroes" of each story choose different paths to find a solution. In AOT, it's pure cynicism, even nihilism at points, and it's pretty overt that Eren makes the wrong choice, even if ultimately it does give his friends a chance to right the generational wrongdoings against their people. In VS though, Thorfinn rises from nihilism to find a path towards peace with unadulterated optimism. Eren allowed his tragedies to consume him and lead him to a path of violence in order to secure a faint glimmer of hope. Thorfinn overcomes his tragedies to become a shining beacon of hope. Two answers to the same problem.
Bro you literally you wanted to sound smart so bad 😂😂. AoT and Vinland are literally both about breaking the cycle of hate. In AoT both sides at the end had the same goal but only one side was actually taking action to get their which was Erens side while the alliance going against him wanted to stop hate, but only to save themselves and they didn’t really know how to. Not only that but they were going about it the wrong way.
While in Vinland, Canute is similar to Eren in that both use violence to get to their goal and they are trying to save a group of people. Canute as many would say “abandoned his “humanity” and loyalty to god to bring peace to the Vikings. And Eren similarly did the same to save his people and being peace. And Thorfinn wants to bring peace to all by ceasing war and violence entirely like Armin. But in all honesty, Canute is the most human character in the series, and hasn’t abandoned his humanity. It is only natural for someone in his position to think the way he does. That is why he is still human. While Thorfinn isn’t human, the way he thinks is different and above that of normal human thinking. His mindset is only something that can be adopted by going through what he has.
Same as Eren, his mindset is like a combination of Thorfinn and Canute. He wants to save his people so he uses as much violence as necessary. He even endures all the pain he has to in order to achieve peace same as Thorfinn.

And if you actually read the story then you’d see that he literally doesn’t even want to do the rumbling and is sorry. He literally hates it more than any other character in the story, but he is the only one with a will strong enough to do what it takes. Everyone else in AoT just says they want to end the violence and that they want peace. But as the story literally shows, the rumbling was literally the only option.
Please reread AoT. Eren didn’t let anything consume him. The anger he shows is literally just his willpower and his anger towards what he has to do.
In the story. It literally shows that Eren tried literally every other option before he went with the rumbling. Don’t forget that he was basically spoiled about the entire story early on and it had a huge impact on him. But after trying to go for peace and it constantly failing, it showed him that the future couldn’t be changed to save everyone. Eren sacrificed his humanity and shouldered the pain of everyone in order to do this. That’s what makes him more human and compassionate than anyone else in the story.

One thing that people might not realize is that Thorkell is based off of a real person Thorkell the Tall. He served Cnut (Canut) the Great and actually fought switched sides during the Danish invasion. He first sides with the Danes and then switches to the English during the battle of London and then switched back to the Danish side fighting alongside Cnut
This man is a genius for using the Berserk manga method of storytelling. The Farm Arc = The Black Swordsman Arc. Bravo sir 👏
I can't say that I agree that Thorfinn actually building a settlement in Vinland
doesn't matter. In fact I'd argue it is going to be the most important arc
because that is Thorfinn's ultimate test.
Now historically we know that the Vinland settlement fails and Thorfinn returns
to Iceland and eventually dies in his homeland.
However the question is, if the manga follows history (more or less) then
what will lead Thorfinn back to Iceland? Why does Thorfinn ultimately fail?
At the same time I do not expect that Vinland will be an entirely nihilistic story.
I don't think the point of it will be, Thorfinn is a stupid pacifist and war is inevitable.
Thorfinn has friends and family and a legacy.
The real life Thorfinn had a son named Snorri who was the first person of
European descent born on North American soil.
Will Thorfinn teach Snorri what it means to be a "true warrior"?
Will Snorri understand where a young Thorfinn failed to?
Sure maybe none of this will happen. The manga doesn't HAVE TO follow history and
the sagas (which I think are more legend?) The manga could have evil robots appear
out of nowhere and have Thorfinn unite all of humanity in one final epic struggle.
But I personally feel like it should (more or less) follow history/the sagas
and I think it will. I'm just not sure what points Yukimura will want to focus on.
However I think ending with Snorri will be bring the series full circle.
Finally this isn't historical but after Thorfinn dies I want a small time skip of an older Snorri meeting a young William the Conqueror and have him implied to be the spiritual successor to Askeladd.

'Thousand year voyage' give the clue. Probably thorfin will fail, but it will insipire us the reader to dream about it. Vinland is a dream that is passed from generation to generation. Thorfinn passed the torch to all of us. Vinland might be impossible, but the author still tell us to seek it

So, part of why I constantly bring up Vinland saga to people (the manga specifically) along with Berserk is cause; there is overarching messages in the stories about things that I feel are missing more and more for people in our current era. Sure, these stories are told through blood, death and destruction, in the pages of fictional books-yet they still hold exceptionally important messages about who we are as people and about growth, acceptance, improvement, adversity, awareness, failure, overcoming ourselves...So many things.
I've not watched any sort of 3 hour long video in quite some time, the last was Lord of the Rings trilogy.
I feel every second was well spent.

He stands out now. Because he has character growth in the 2nd Season. But lemme tell you, in the 1st Season Thorfinn no matter how much his actions "made sense" he was (possibly designed) to be unlikeable, and it showed.

Also designed to deconstruct the typical ''edgy, angry avenger'' trope that gets portrayed as cool and enticing in other (shonen) manga to show how it would look like in reality: sad, nihilistic and offputting.

@@ThyBait Calm your tits, I said that way in case I pissed someone off, clearly it didn't work. I made the comment in the first place because as great as Thorfinn is written; we have to spend an ENTIRE season seeing a side with little to no likeable qualities, and for that to be your main character, someone who should be guiding the show, it leaves the overall experience with no one to relate with.
The only character I can think of that I genuinely liked as a person throughout the entirety of S1 was Thorkell. It didn't seem like he raped or was a dishonorable douche (at least at this point) but was honest about pretty much everything and just loved fighting.
Askeladd, as great as he was written; was also unlikeable. He is literally a replica of Thorfinn without even realizing it. Instead of just letting go of the past and joining people who cared about him, like Wales, he is actively leading a crusade with the very kind of people he despises in the hopes that he can ACTUALLY make a difference, when obviously that was never in the cards for him. The same way Thorfinn could've just killed Askeladd in his sleep and gone back to his family, beating Askeladd was never in the cards for him either, so instead he became an unlikeable errand boy for the very people he despised.
I don't have to explain the little side characters in the Askeladd band, they were all unredeemable pillagers. And I couldn't connect with any of their jokes due to what they literally just did an hour before.
I could go on but my point is while I understand WHY it is this way for the show, it doesn't change the fact that there is literally NO ONE to care about in S1 that the plot follows. They are all actively doing terrible things and whether or not Thorfinn is doing it for whinny reasons doesn't matter because he doesn't question, or even make an effort until 20 episodes later.
Vinland Saga is one of my favorite stories ever. The development and character writing is unlike anything else in manga or anime. And you can't forget about the banging soundtrack, it's fits the tone and setting perfectly.

I have watched this twice in a row just to be really really really really sure that my first assumption was correct. This is just absolutely epic. So very well explained, narrated, summed up and edited. It really is a masterpiece in itself that does justice to the masterpiece which is Vinland Saga. I have geniuenly never felt as engaged in any youtube video as this one.
After marathoning the vinlandsaga up to S2E9, this geniuenly had me hooked, from start to finish.
That requires mastery in pacing, presentation, timing.
And for a 3 hour video?
Thats unironically is some of the most impressive feats I can imagine, imagening the sheer amount of time it takes to make it right in a modern day enviroment where some people like myself has the attentionspan of a hummingbird on cocaine, aka none.

15:44 Leif was actually going to North America on purpose, the first people who saw it though found it by accident. Living on Greenland, there was practically no wood for building, so he made the excursion on the account of a different guy who saw it while looking for Greenland to find his family.

Vagabond did basically the same thing now that i think about it, though musashi just learns to do his own thing for the most part and still uses violence when necessary, unlike thorfinn who makes it a prinicple to never use violence as little as possible and tries to make a change in the world.

Vinland saga went from an anime i thought was just cool viking action to one of my favorite stories in anime/manga i’ve had in a while
That was a good video my guy. The scene where Thorfinn tells the story of Vinland just like Thors made me tear up a bit the first time I read it.

Now that I've seen the show I appreciate this video so much and the life lessons Makoto Yukimura was doing his best to teach. Again I doubt you understand how much this video helped me.
