    Hey Kenny. Awesome videos, I’ve learned so much from you. I’m embarrassed to say but I’ve played the drums for 20 years and have never actually tuned my drums to specific notes. That led me to realize that I don’t even know how to tune my drums to an A or D#, so then I went down this rabbit hole, long story short, what type of tuner would you recommend buying to get my drums tuned properly? Thanks!

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  Před 3 lety +1

      Don’t be embarrassed. Its not something that is taught in a standardized fashion like guitar tuning. As far as tuning aids go the Drum Tune Pro app (much cheaper) or a Tune bot (way too expensive) will help, but without good methods to tune they can make you chase your tail even more. Just remember I offer online tuning lessons that help you define your tuning methods. The lessons will change the game. Thank you so much for watching, and feel free to email me at kennysharretts@gmail.com to discuss lessons.

      Awesome as these are great drums. Yeah brass has been known to have a bit more more snare howl than your average snare. 🤣🤣 Balanced wires and balanced heads go a long way in controlling that issue. If I tune my Black Beauty to your Low A/E Perfect 5th tuning with batter A3 (220hz) and reso E4 (329hz) (lug pitches with tune-bot) I get a D# fundamental tone. This sounds lower than your result. How did you measure the notes of the heads when determining A and E? Thanks a lot!

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  Před rokem +1

      Howdy Jan ,
      In my early vids I just used a piano so octave choice is alas relative to your tastes. If you like the A3 use that. If you like the A4? Use that. I tried to keep it open. My main question is what head are you using? The Evans Heavyweight on this drum tends to pitch lower at higher tensions.
      My second question though is how do you like the P5th tuning you mentioned? Thank you so much for watching, for using the methods I discuss, and commenting. Please also note as i’m telling all my viewers Super Thanks is now available on my vids to help support my channel. 🙏

      That is something I do understand. I actually just did an online tuning lesson yesterday with a cat who had a similar issue with his Brass snare. Most of the issues were fixed with proper tuning, and balancing his snare wires. Then the ring became something that enhanced the sound of the drum. Adding a gel didn’t make it sound like a cardboard box, but instead focused his snare sound to a fat fist punch of a snare sound. In this vid i’m using a single ply with a dot, and only a 3/4 moon gel. No uncontrollable ring, and it definitely doesn’t sound like a cardboard box 🤗🤗🤣🤣 If you need help on the matter please stream this step by step lesson OR simply book an online lesson via my website

    One of my biggest pet peeves when watching drum tuning videos is when the host says " crank your head to medium tight". In my head i'm like "so how would I know when i have medium tightness?" The instructions are quite subjective.
    I strongly believe that drummers should use notes as basis to standardize their reviews/ setups such as this video. I mean sure, we can always customize the sound we want; no issues. But when we're educating, i think it's important to teach drummers how to achieve certain ranges and allow them to remember how to get there any time they change heads or whenever they feel like exploring other ranges.

After watching yours and Nolly Getgood's videos, i've learned how to adjust my drums to the music im playing. In fact, i made it sort of a thing to comment the note i'm hearing when i listen to snare reviews, just so other drummers have a standard reference to what they're listening to.

      Low and High LOL. Alas I don't use a Tunebot in general for tuning so at the time I had none handy. Strobe tuners are great for this, but I roll with the concept of tension/pitch being relative. If its a loose tension and giving me a C for example, I call it a low C (although usually thats a C2 or C3) if it's tight I call it high which is usually a C4. I've added TB and DD settings to a lot of my recent vids to help drummers such as yourself who want to know. I don't tune with these tools, but I will document the settings for my viewers. I never used any apps or tune bots until recently to map settings for my viewers. LOL! But I have found on snares you can get both readings depending on how you use the TB. I'd have to watch the video when I can to remind myself of the details, as the Evans Heavyweight is so thick that it has it's own "Tone map" comparatively to other heads. Same with the 500 as a bottom head. Thicker so it's got it's own profile. If I had this drum I'd tune it up, and tell ya. LOL! But this belongs to a friend who is now back in Columbia.

      Howdy Dennis. When I shot this video alas I didn’t have a tunebot or drum dial. However I did have a piano. I was also surprised during this shoot at the range of this particular drum. I mean I’ve been a pro tech for 24 years. Stevie, Rihanna, Janet, the Dead, and it’s rare to find a drum with this broad of a range. So when the Reso gave me what sounded like the G’s in octaves I was impressed. As far as the A# man I was REALLY surprised as it was tight, but still had a bit of tone. I’m with you. An A# is “usually” way too high for a Reso head. Just for the record your comments seem angry, and accusatory towards a drum tech who has shared TONS of pro level knowledge on his channel for free. For FREE! And then you get pissy? Boooooo! I have no reason to lie, and I do have a bit of experience with tuning drums. So let me clarify.
